Hi,

I'm about to purchase my first road bike and I was wondering if it would be a wise decision to go for a disc brake equipped bike? I'm coming from a MTB background where disc brakes are standard so no prejudice there. I'm a fairly light guy at around 143 lbs.

I've been looking at the Giant Contend SL range and narrowed it down to 2 models:

SL 1:
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/pl/contend-sl-1
+ Nearly full 105 groupset
+ Lighter wheels
+ Colour (personal preference)
- Rim brakes (that wear out the rim, I'll have to eventually replace the whole rims/wheels)

SL 2 Disc:
https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/bikes/model/contend.sl.disc.2/26004/92756/
+ TRP Spyre mechanical discs (probably the best mechanical disc brake at the moment. Engages both brake pads.)
- 10 SPD Tiagra (shall I decide to upgrade to 11 SPD it would be expensive)
- Heavier wheels

I live in a fairly hilly area with steep ups and down (albeit not long).

And here's the SL 2 Disc on 10 SPD Tiagra with mechanical discs.
>>
I'd definitely go with the SL1.

Lighter wheels make a pretty big difference in hills and it's why wheels are generally classified as either 'fast wheels (aero)' or 'climbing wheels (light)'.
Plus, I wouldn't buy a brand new 10 speed now for the reasons that you've mentioned.
Also, though I haven't tried disks, I've seen many people here say that mechanical disks aren't worth touching and that hydraulic is the only real option.

It's your money, your life, and your decision but if it was me then I think that too many things lean towards getting the SL1 over the SL2.
Even though I personally prefer the colour scheme of the SL2.

You have to admit here in the USA we've been so busy trying to stop and shit on this technology for some time now. Singapore though just went along with it even got government money to start it up. Why is it that in the USA and where I'm from California is now the laughing stock of the world when it comes to building the next revolutions. I don't understand this frightening fear Americans have over driving jobs being lost either. Most jobs have been lost to time. There used to be a guy at an auto factory that would literally install door handles then his job was taken by machines. The world is changing and if we don't do something about this then the Chinese and Indians will.

Fuck you. Most Asian countries don't seem to value human life very much compared to Western countries (they crank out babies like it's from a factory, wonder why they don't value people, LOL) so of course they DGAF anywhere near as much about whether it's actually safe or not. It fucks up and runs into a crowd of people and kills them all? No problem, shoot the programmer in the head and say "LOL, sorry about your dead family members, tough shit, go make more!" and move on. But go right ahead, go to Singapore and get into one of those deathtraps, be sure to post livestream of your violent death. You 'autonomous car' fags are pathetic.

Self driving cars are fine when you got perpetual traffic jams with 2mph average speeds.

Crowded cities with cars going 60+mph and 90+mph highways are a different story.

Well, I have been riding daily for the past several months and lost a lot of weight and had lots of fun. Winter will be here before we know it and I would like to keep riding as long as possible. I live in Ohio, so there will be plenty of snow. I currently have a Diamondback Overdrive 29er which has served me well as an entry-level mountain bike. This is my daily commuter. I am considering a Walmart fat tire bike if/when the snow gets bad enough. I have a lot more confidence riding than I had before, so I want to keep up my commute (8 miles/day) as long as possible. Pic mostly unrelated, what I rode for 10+ years until I finally got a new bike.

I hope they shovel the sidewalks, or you have balls of steel. Plows push the snow right into the bike lanes and shoulders, so you've got to get right next to the cars.
Normal mountain bike tires are fine, I've found. Disk brakes are probably better, since you're going to have lots of snow all around your rims. I've survived the past three winters here (Utah) with those brakes though, so they still work ok.
Also, get good fenders - you don't want all that dirty slush going all over your back.
>>
>>1001135
Yeah, my current bike has disc brakes. I can buy fenders too. I ride through mud all the time without them, but slush will be terrible all over my legs during the winter. Apparently there are some people here that can manage in the winter, but this will be my first attempt to last as long as I can. I think the plows will end up thwarting me though. The roads are just not bike friendly at all and really dangerous.
>>
>>1001137
>but slush will be terrible all over my legs during the winter
Oh yah, get rain pants. Work great, and act as a bit of a wind breakers too. Gloves are also a must, though mittens might work better - if your fingers are separated, they can't warm each other, and even with gloves your pinky can get very cold. Those silly covers that go over the whole handle are ugly as hell, but they are will save your hands some pain.

Expecting maybe a couple folks to be able to weigh in on an already specific subject. Maybe you know something I don't or I overlooked.

Time trials, I never expected to care about them but I do now. I'm looking for them marginal gains specifically aero advantages shoe covers, gloves vs no gloves, skinsuits ect.
I've got a lazer wasp, 808 and disc, I've only used podiumwear skinsuits. So I'm looking into Voler, Castelli and NoPins for more aero options. I was thinking of having lycra mittens made possibly, it is illegal but if the judges don't say anything whatever. Also looking into balancing my front wheel with weights.
My off season will be dedicated to training for 2 specific TTs with my coach.

Is this your blog now?
>>
>>1000870
Maybe you should train harder instead of being a cheating faggot. If you're going to cheat just use steriods.
>>
>>1000870
I don't think you've ever done a TT or train for any race discipline based on what you're saying, because if you did then you'd know that at your (young, low) level, training is more important than anything else, and that all this minutiae of which you speak only matters to riders at the highest levels and the top of their game. If you're actually thinking of doing any sort of racing I suggest you concentrate on your training and forget about the rest of that stuff for now. Your coach (assuming you really have one) will agree with me.

Also, OP, there is a bike training and racing thread that you should be posting in, assuming you're for real: >>996025

>>1000885
Regardless of what I just told the OP, legal choices of equipment by definition isn't 'cheating', and steroids only really help someone who is at the top levels of their fitness, and they really don't help endurance athletes much at all to start with. Obviously you're even less of a road racer than the OP is, and in fact I'd wager you don't even race your buddies for fun. Wouldn't at all be surprised if you're a trainfag and don't even own a bike to start with. Please go infest your train-foamer threads and leave the bike threads to people who enjoy discussing bikes, otherwise you're just being rude.

I guess this is the only good board for it, but is anyone else surprised that despite today's ship advancements we still have a need for tugboats?
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1000614
Not really. Big clumsy boats will always need a little help.
>>
>>1000712
I was thinking exactly this. Cargo ship advancements are largely to make them huger and efficient-er on the open seas i think for the most part. I don't see how they could ever be precise and dainty in close quarters.

When I joined the Navy and first got to a submarine I was kind of surprised that docking one of these high-tech nuclear death machines involved a bunch of dudes standing topside throwing ropes around, same as it's been for thousands of years, but really there's no other cost effective way to do it.

There was even one pier that had tried to automate shore utility connections by having them permanently mounted on swing arms, but they cost too much to maintain and were allowed to rust and seize up.

Bought my new bike 5 days ago, went into the garage today and both tires are flat! How can something like this even happen? Yesterday everything was okay and now *BOOM* flat tires :(!

so the back wheel on my road bike went flat overnight so I took it to the store. instead of telling me why it went flat they wanted $12.50 for the service. I said fine. Then he sold me on a new tire, I said fine. Just went for a nice long ride today and when I was still 20km from home I got a pinch flat...god damn bike store wants to charge me another $12.50 AND pay for the tube. That was a $60 purchase this morning and I had to take a cab back for another $20.

is there anything i can say or do? (other than do all my own work from now on)

Yep, start fixing your own flats, it's an easy skill all cyclists should have. Also, patch your tubes instead of replacing them, much cheaper that way.

As for whether you can demand any restitution for the shop, probably not. If you a pinch flat after a long ride that doesn't necessarily mean the shop made a mistake, chances are good that you got a small puncture and didn't notice that tire was slowly losing air, which allowed the underinflated tube to be pinch flatted.

But I will agree that 12.50 for flat repair seems overpriced (unless the flat is on the back wheel of a bike with an IGH + coaster brake, which case it could reasonably require 12.5 minutes to fix from start to finish). But then again, bike shop owners and staff have to eat too.
>>
>>999877

What tire? It cost you $47.50 for a single new tire? That's more than a GP4000SII.
>>
>>999877
You know what a pinch flat is but can't change a tube on a road bike.

This doesn't add up.
