I'm out on the W&OD trail in northern Virginia. Enjoying the beautiful quasi-fall weather and doing a bit of exploring. Never been this far before. Figure I'll turn back after my water break.

What sort of exploring does /n/ enjoy?

That's not the W&OD Trail. That is perhaps a pic from one of the connecting trails but not the W&OD. I ride the 90 miles on the trail down and back at least once a week.

That being said, rural exploration in exurban areas is the best. North of Leesburg in Waterford, Lovettsville, Taylorstown, etc. is the shit for NOVA folks.

Yes it is... it's in Vienna. That connection you see is heading into a park. I took the picture with the trail behind me.

But yeah, I love checking out little areas off of the trail, especially Herndon town center and Reston tow center.

Check out the Carolina bbq brothers in Ashburn. Great little local place right on the trail. https://g.co/kgs/x95mza

What is a good bike to buy for a four-mile commute and some weekend adventures?

I'd like to keep the price under $500, but flexing is possible if the quality is good.

>[Dhaka, Bangladesh] almost completely lacks the basic infrastructure and rule of law that make big cities navigable. There are just 60 traffic lights in Dhaka, and they are more or less ornamental; few drivers heed them. The main problem with Dhaka’s anarchic streets, though, is that there aren’t enough. The Daily Star has reported that just 7 percent of Dhaka is covered by roads. (In places like Paris and Barcelona, models of 19th-century urban planning, the number is around 30 percent.) Footpaths are also an issue. There are too few sidewalks in Dhaka, and those that exist are often impassable, occupied by vendors and masses of poor citizens who make their homes in curbside shanties.

Thread for good /n/-related books and books that every good citize/n/ should read.

This can include the following (as a guideline):

BIKES: bicycle repair books, history of bicycles, introductions and guides to cycling, books about professional cycling, books about bicycle touring.

RAILROADS AND TRAINS: history of railways and trains, history of subways and streetcars, railway and train design, polemics on the future of trains.

CITIES AND URBAN DESIGN: history of the evolution of cities, anti-private-automobile tracts/rants, good design of roads.

Also, books on aircraft and ships are welcomed as well.

I like to read, but somehow I haven't come across many /n/-related books I like enough to recommend. I'm looking forward to reading Road to Valor soon, I've heard good things about it.

>Bikes
Bicycling Science by David Wilson
-Great primer on the physics and physiology that explain how bicycles function and are ridden. Also includes some general background on the development of bicycles and other HPVs. Worth reading for any mechanic or rider who wants to really understand why things work the way they do. Only thing this book lacks is a comprehensive section on suspension, hopefully that will be included in the 4th edition.

-Bicycle Quarterly (Magazine)
Really good writing, great photographs, interesting topics. Highly recommend if you're interested in randonneuring -type bikes, the history of European cycling, and technical reviews of products currently on the market.

-The Dancing Chain by Frank Berto
Actually I don't recommend this one, I'm mentioning it here to save you the trouble of tracking down a copy and being disappointed. An excellent book when it was published, this has since been superceded by material available on the internet.

>Cities
- The Geography of Nowhere by James Howard Kunstler
This is a delightful book about urbanism and planning - it has its flaws, but being dry is not one of them. Kunstler is a passionate author and if you've not encountered his work before it will open your eyes to a new way of looking at the world.

A collection of many blogs, and every weekday morning they publish a collection of links of articles and stories from around the web that touch on transportation, mass transit, planning, and urbanism in general.

Imagine your grandpa is drunk and has autism and wants you to know that everything you know about bike wheels is wrong

After I read it I sat down to true a wheel and made it much much worse. The wheel is still sitting in my basement three years later

I love to cycle in the early morning when it's still dark, when there are no filthy cagers on the street, and I get to see the sky turn purple and then that eerie fresh dim light blue.

Driving my car later in the day I'm respectful to the faggotass Lycra donning numale queers, giving them space and allowing them to cross the roads. I always make sure to share the road safely and properly.

That's what cars will do to you.

One anon on here once made a good point. He wrote that if you look at car commercials, you'll always see the car speeding by on a scenic and completely empty road to the sound of soothing music. When the reality is that most of the time you sit in traffic or are looking for a parking spot, to the sound of horns and yelling kids. You react to cyclists this way because they interfere with that dream of speeding down a free road, which you associate with your car. The 'is' state is different than the 'should' state and that is frustating to you. Then you aim your frustration at the apparent target, the cyclist in front of you.

Why do you feel the need to insult people who choose appropriate, comfortable clothes for riding their bikes?

It's not an insult if it's true. Is calling someone white an insult? Is calling someone black an insult?

Half advice thread, half shitty blog post

Hey /n/. I'm 26, and today I learned how to ride a bike. I never had one as a kid and always wanted one. Had been thinking about it the last couple of years, but never had any free time until recently

So on monday of last week, someone had parked a pretty old, pretty shitty bike behind our dumpster and it's just sat there. A magna excitor, something you'd find at walmart. Well yesterday I figured they were just trying to throw it away, so no harm in taking it home

I've never been on a bike before and it was a pretty awkward experience. Wasn't sure how to properly sit, how to start, well, -going-, nor how to balance. Fell over after a few feet for like thirty minutes. Then it just...clicked. Managed a good thirty yards before I had to clumsily stop, not having a handle on turning the bike at all. But it felt really good. And so after another hour I could cycle about my backyard, sitting or standing, without crashing for the most part. And I'm absurdly thrilled

So I bought a bike. A decent one (I think?). After a bit of research, I settled on an Airborne Guardian. I live in north GA and there are a lot of trails around here so I figured a mountain bike would be best, and it's a hardtail which I heard is alright for road use? I could be totally wrong, I know nothing about bikes so please correct me if I'm wrong. Would you say it was a decent pick for someone's first bike?

Also I bought it stock, and I don't have any tools, or lube or grease or anything. Is there stuff I should have before it gets here for when I put it together/before I take it out? Anything I should research about basic maintenance and such? I'd really appreciate any advice. I'm super excited

>>1008596
As for exactly what tools you'll need, I'd wait and see what comes with the bike and also how much assembly/tuning is required. But you'll probably only need 4 and 5mm hex wrenches, a phillips screwdriver, a pedal wrench, and grease for the pedal threads and seatpost. Frankly, if you're starting with absolutely no knowledge at all, I would recommend you pay a bike shop to assemble this bike (or at the very least do a safety check on it after you assemble it) to verify that bolts are tightened sufficiently, that your headset is adjusted properly, and wheels reasonably true. You can learn to do most assembly tasks yourself by watching online videos (adjusting derailers and brakes will be the main tasks), but there's lots of things you'll miss if you've never ever worked on a bike before.
>>
>>1008596
Not a bad choice. Ride errday, give no fucks, and stay safe.
>>
>So I bought a bike. A decent one (I think?). After a bit of research, I settled on an Airborne Guardian.

It's a solid choice. It avoids the biggest flaw of most entry level mtbs, which is crappy suspension.

The wheelset is strictly bare bones, and it's going to take a lot of muscle to throw around tight corners because of it's weight.

>which I heard is alright for road use?
If you do lots of road riding, get road tires. You lose 15 percent efficiency or so with knobby dirt tires on road, but it's not going to explode or catch on fire or anything like that. If you expect to ride all day on the road, it's obviously the wrong choice, but that's not exactly a suprise.

>Anything I should research about basic maintenance and such? I'd really appreciate any advice.

Sheldon brown. All of it.

How realistic an idea is it to fly to south america or south east asia and buy a cheap used touring bike and backpack around from hostel to hostel?
Can I take a bike on the trains and buses? I am not looking to bike the whole way but want to bike around cities for sure.
I am not into doing more than 50 miles in a day or going at more than a leisurely pace.

Anyone here done anything like this?

why do you want to buy a cheap touring bike if you're ready to pay for airplane to asia back and forth, for hotel and for train/buses between city ?

if you're not wanting to go from one city to an other by bike why not just rent a bike in one city, fool around, go to the next city by bus and then rent an other bike ?
>>
>>1008030
A very bad and heavy aluminium road bike with Shimano MTB gears is laughlinly expensive in Brazil. You would have to pay at least USD 800 for it and that's a Brazilian brand with bikes made in China.

In other words, you should bring your own bike. And you will need fat tires so that it doesn't brake with te first (dozens) of potholes.
>>
>>1008032
The reason for a cheap bike is so its no big deal if it gets stolen.
I imagine renting bikes will get expensive and be hard to find sometimes

probably, also check if you could fit the tire on your rim and chainstay clearance
>>

Rim is recommended 25-38 so that's all good and I measured everything on the bike, should be plenty of space.
>>
I wouldn't worry about switching tubes. People with fat bikes will run a 2.4" tube in a 3.8 to 4.8" tires to save weight which is a considerably bigger jump.

I don't even HAVE a mountain bike and I think you're a rediculous manchild for posting threads like this.

I'll bet you don't even *own* a bike, OP. What are you, confined to a wheelchair and to being indoors 24/7/365, and massively butthurt because of it, so you lash out at whoever you think you can get away with? And then you have to do it here, on 4chan, because you know nobody can censor you except for the moderators, and since this is /n/, you'd have to post CP to get your post deleted and you b&. So we have a permagimp posting somewhere almost nobody cares about, about shit nobody really cares about. Can you get any more pathetic than that? I don't think you can, at least not on 4chan. IRL I'll bet you're even more pathetic, though. I've known people with permanent disabilities, and they come in two flavors: the ones that pull themselves up by their own figurative bootstraps and achieve well beyond anyones expectations, and the ones who whine and verbally bully and demand because they think they're entitled. Guess which you would be?

Not even sure you're some permagimp or not, of course. But some kid stuck in a wheelchair is still a better person (and posts better threads) than you do.

Kill yourself. You'll do the world a favor.

Bell is immensly underrated. You can warn people when you overtake or ring before you go in corners that don't have good visibility.

Fenders are a sign that you don't just ride on the weekend in hermetically confined save spaces, also known as "bike parks"

This is the ultimate /n/ bike. Folds to fit into other forms of transport, racks to carry luggage, Internal geared hub so weather less of an issue. Brakes sufficient and tyres semi-slick while wide enough for padding.

I mostly agree, but as much as I love small wheeled bikes I think there are uses that call for larger wheels and more solid frames. Still though, for grocery runs, commutes or drinks I do take my folder over a full sized bike.
>>
>>1010177
I must admit, you do have a point about some applications needing a more sturdy frame. Do you think, with sufficient R&D investment, it is possible to meet those standards with a folding bike?
I found that unless exceeding 30mph the smaller wheels have never been weaker for me - cobbles feel mostly the same if using 1.5 inch wide tyres but YMMV.

I found it on Walmart's site.

It really is a piece of crap, probably made in China, Walmart bike. No-name components of questionable quality. The wheelset is built on single-wall alloy rims, which is probably the biggest weakness of all. I wouldn't trust the thing any farther than I could chuck it.

Frankly the fact that it's a Walmart bike is enough by itself to disqualify it, but the details are it's not made to last.

Save up several hundred more and go hunting on Craigslist for a used bike with name-brand components and a decent wheelset. You'll be much happier in the long run.
