Let's talk nicely about the fantastic Canadian artist known as Grimes.

News:
- The futuristic new Venus Fly video featuring Janelle Monae is out now on Tidal

>almost finished building like 20 or so 5D multi timbral synths in roli equator, they'll be released for roli blocks later this year. never made synths from scratch before, its pretty fun
Video with her playing a mean jam: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6JQUMjSd_/

- Grimes produced a new Aristophanes song, Humans Become Machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHmVqMISPLw If you don't know, Aristophanes is that Taiwanese rapper that performed on SCREAM.

- David Byrne is a fan:
>"I started collecting pictures of Grimes, Madonna, Kate Bush, Sinèad O’Connor, on and on—popular musicians are obsessed with her. This trend inspired the premise for the show: a pop star decides to give in to the Joan obsession and tell her epic story in concert".

>Boucher's public persona is definitely striking, but one-on-one, the perception completely dissolves. Here I was expecting someone brimming with whimsy, but instead she was a 24-year-old girl; rather down to earth and just coming to terms with the concept of fame. The fame that brings David Byrne of Talking Heads to your shows. When his name came up, Boucher was absolutely ecstatic, like an excited little puppy. "The tour in America was fucking insane. David Byrne being there was crazy. I kinda wish I knew he was there before the show… But then again if I did, I probably would’ve been really nervous".

Rule #1: be nice to Grimes.
Rule #2: see Rule #1.

literally telecom engineer. blocking a range of dynamic IPs would ban a whole city in IPv6 and ISPs would not allow that because it affects lots of its clients. VPNs are easier to block if they're static, which they usually are because you pay per adress, so it's not worth it if you get banned

I love her honestly
>>
>>70823675
That's because her natural writing style is incredibly informal. It's literally just a written-out transcription of what she would say out loud if someone was in the room with her. On the one hand it's great because it makes her incredibly personable. But on the other hand it can make her come across as pretentious because - although you get the overall gist of what she means in the words - you miss out on all the vocal/body language cues that normally accompany a conversation. It's a major part of the root cause for why it is she always has so much trouble with people (especially in the press) spinning her words.

Exactly. Her writing style is very close to her actual speaking style. Without the body language to support those words, her written messages could be misinterpreted as pretentious or whatever.

>>
will she be like bowie and always be semi relevant or will she pull a madonna and after she breaks mainstream will she become highly controversial and become super irrelevant except as a pop culture joke
>>
>>70825134
Your prediction is totally off scale. Grimes is umpredictible, she could make masterpiece after masterpiece or she could retire from music. I bet she will not become highly controversial for the simple reason that the quality of her art is really high and most probably will remain really high. There's nothing controversial about her acclaim, she's mostly loved by the music world.
>>
>>70825276
but dont forget its a POP project and she's the POP STAR

will the mainstream public be able to accept her quirks? people don't have a high tolerance for breaking the social status quo...
>>
>>70825564
She's not really a pop star. Only some of her songs are pop (and not even 100% pop). Listen to songs like Scream, Omega, Venus in Fleurs, Eight, Colour of Moonlight, Favriel, Life in the Vivid Dream, Rasik, Swan Song, Dream Fortress, Caladan, Shadout Mapes, Beast Infection, Circumambient. Do those songs sound like they belong to top 40? Be honest.

>>70825706

I can assure you that nothing from top 40 sounds even remotely close to those tunes that I mentioned before. Many of Grimes songs are catchy as fuck, but first you must get the appeal of her voice and her all over the place style. Most pop fans don't have patience, they want quick rewards.

Grimes will not pull a Madonna, she too weird for that. She will pull a Bjork. She's that kind of popstar, the art popstar.

>I'm too lazy to find it but there's a 2011 interview where she mentions her ultimate goal is to be a pop star, soooo
I know. She wants to be a popstar but not any kind of popstar. This is her main goal:
>"To become the world's weirdest pop-star and be respected for having a strong, experimental body of work that represents something new in music and that is considered to be 'important' rather than 'popular'."

That sounds more like a Bjork kind of popstar than Madonna to me.

>cryin sam collins and slash
Except that Bjork and Grimes aren't that different. They're both making synth based art pop music with some strings on top (less strings for Grimes though). Many Bjork songs have some big beats, just like Grimes: Army of Me, Big Time Sensuality, Joga, Declare Independence, etc. Both of these artists have unique, emotional and weird voices. It's impossible to confuse their voices with someone else's voice. I'm not even talking about their funky fashion sense or about their goofy and playful personalities (e.g. compare that Bjork clip when she described a TV with any random Grimes Instagram clip). Add the fact that both are in control over their art and they're really involved in production. Add the fact that both are strongly opinionated and said many controversial things (e.g. Bjork about Bob Dylan and Grimes about Ariel Pink). Add their wild and extravagant live shows (e.g. Bjork at Glastonbury in 1994 with Grimes at Glastonbury in the 2016).

Another funny similarity: both Grimes and Bjork use a single word as their stage name. They're unique but on the same page.

Grimes is an awesome musician in her own right, and you constantly comparing her to Bjork ITTs all the time belittles that fact. Also fwiw not everyone here who likes Grimes also happens to like Bjork (I respect her deeply as a musician, but I have almost no interest in her music.) It's interesting how she could keep the interest during every second of a song. Not even one dull moment, that's one of the things I like about her music. As you said, she could try making longer tracks, with lots of changes like usual. I'm pretty sure that if she would make a classical album I would like it because her songwriting level is incredible. She just keeps making great melodies out of thin air. Magic.

what motivates artists to create art? i don't know the answer to this question. But if you seriously think that it's just to entertain people, that's an extremely depressing and subordinating belief.

i don't see how anyone who thinks that could ever have a true appreciation for art. that would mean that the mona lisa is no better than reality tv shows and that the two were created for the same purpose.
>>
>>70834667
I'm not that anon, but for me artistic expression is just a fancy thing, the real thing is the actual art. Why would you care so much about what motivates artists to create art? If you knew nothing about an artist, would you be unable to appreciate a piece of art for what it is, without being influenced by context?

>Why would you care so much about what motivates artists to create art?
asking "what is the purpose of art?" automatically begs the qustion "why do artists make art?"

They don't do it for no reason. Artists have a specific sense of purpose that drives them to create art. And if anyone has the authority to define the purpose of art, it's the artist and the artist alone. I bet Grimes (like any other artist) would be pissed if she found out some dumb fanboys were trying to define the purpose of her art.

99% of artists will say that they're not doing it for you.

hi there reddit its me the grimer here to answer any and all of your questions about proper moustache maintaining and grooming ask away
>>
>>70834919
Sounds like entirely subjective distinctions to me.

>>70834914
It goes both ways desu. In the musicology field we have special formal terms for this sort of thing: programmatic music (music created with a specific interpretation in mind) vs. absolute music (music created with an eye towards giving audiences room to come up with their own interpretations.)

Both are valid ways of making music - just with different ends in mind. In any case all of the best music in the world is compatible with both modes of experience, thereby making the distinction little more than academic.

For example, go listen to/enjoy Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique. Next go listen to/enjoy it while reading the extensive program notes he wrote to "guide" listeners. You decide which provides a "better" experience. Chances are that you'll end up enjoying the music either way, because it SOUNDS great - which is all that really matters at the end of the day.
>>
>>70834525
>I entertain people for a living.
do you entertain them by performing music that other people wrote? because that's something different entirely..

also i've been meaning to ask you, what other kinds of non-classical music do you like aside from grimes?
>>
>>70835624
>do you entertain them by performing music that other people wrote?
All of the above. I regularly perform music written by people hundreds of years dead as well as people very much alive - some of whom I know personally.
I also compose music (mostly neo-classical) and perform it/direct others in the performance of it, depending on the circumstances. Much like any other person who gets to the point of doing this sort of thing professionally.

>what other kinds of non-classical music do you like aside from grimes?
Scott Walker. Foals. Almost anything new wave/minimal wave/goth related. And film/television soundtracks, particularly most anything by Wojciech Kilar or Yoko Kanno.

She would then pursue a solo career that showed a different, much bleaker, darker side of her. She died in a bicycle accident having suffered a heart attack whilst riding. At the time she was on methadone replacement therapy living a healthier life style and dealing with her drug addiction.
>The first of several traumas in Clapton’s life came when Clapton was 9 years old and learned that the woman he thought was his sister was actually his mother. She had already remarried and had other children, and continued to play a sisterly role in his life.
>Charles had an incredibly traumatic childhood. At age 5 he witnessed his own brother’s death by drowning, and went blind the following year.
>Born to a single mother and an imprisoned father, Hendrix was raised mostly by family friends until his father returned at age three, wherein he began to drink heavily and fight often with Hendrix’s mother. Routine household violence, frequent moves between apartments and hotels, poverty and alleged sexual abuse all factored into Hendrix’s childhood and left him a shy and withdrawn child, characteristics he would retain even after becoming the legendary musical icon he is still remembered as today.

OK. Similarities:

Kraftwerk: lots of her beats, basslines and synth melodies. Quick example: the Oblivion bassline, kinda similar to Autobahn. Try also Symphonia IX, Be a Body, Genesis, Circumambient, and Realiti.

Cocteau Twins: basically her voice. Listen to her first 2 albums. Most of these songs sound like they could have been made by Cocteau Twins if they were synthpop. Try Sagrad, Know the Way, Skin, Rasik, Dream Fortress, Gambang, Favriel, My Sisters Says the Saddest Things.

Depeche Mode: her dark synthpop aesthetic. Try for instance Nightmusic which has a keyboard solo on par with DM's early years. Try also World Princess Part II, Vowels = Space and Time, Flesh Without Blood, Pin, Butterfly, plus those songs mentioned above for Kraftwerk.

Skinny Puppy: the influence it's more subtle but it's here. Try Scream, Urban Twilight, Eight, Caladan, Orphia, Colour of Moonlight, Venus Fly, Kill V. Maim, Omega, Venus in Fleurs.

30+ Grimes fan reporting in. In research it's what's known as predictable side effects of convenience sampling. You (I'm assuming) are under 25. Therefore most people you know are likely also under 25. Therefore anyone you already know who is a Grimes fan is almost certainly under 25 as well.

Look buddy, I didn't say that Claire & Liz voices are identical, I said that's the most similar thing between them. The common ground. Cocteau Twins are also known for Robin Guthrie's ethereal guitar and you will not see that in Grimes' music.

It doesn't matter that Grimes used delay and reverb, the tone of her real singing voice is kinda similar to Liz Fraser anyway. Just listen to this Ave Maria cover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGLvUejoRb4 Don't you get some Cocteau Twins vibes?

How do you think the bubbles factor into the video conceptually?

Bubbles represent moments, or other worlds, or ideas or thoughts floating around, so you gotta go get ’em, otherwise they’ll float away or pop. So those bubbles were all Grimes’ moments.

Would you want to do more Grimes videos?

Of course, I could see bubbles in all of her videos! And I’d like to be onstage during a Grimes concert. Do you think the people who love her music would like to see the bubbles?

Yes, I do.

She can't help but inspire passion in people, either through her art or her natural persona. For better or worse.

Tbh there are plenty of professional artists out there (NOT myself included) who would probably kill for a mere fraction of the people-power she manages to inadvertently draw out of people on almost a daily basis. But there is a LOT of mental stress to be had by anyone at the center of that sort of attention. Having fans is great, but sometimes it also really sucks.
