Since this is the most relevant thread at the moment (and I am on mobile and cannot post a new thread instead), does it count as a musical period if (in a minor key) the first phrase ends on a III chord instead of a V?

Also, is that a half cadence or is there another name for that kind of end to a phrase?
>>
I don't know what any of this means and I play guitar. Thoughts?
>>
>>60189250
post the roman numerals. You can technically do whatever you want, but III to i might sound weird.

>>60189252
it's not bad per se, because you should use your ear to write and music theory to analyze, but learning theory is never a bad idea. I prefer jazz notation, but roman numerals have their place
>>
>>60189327
Well, I mean that the phrase ends on III, not that it ends on III - V.

The chord progression as a whole is:
i - VI6 - ii° (vii°/III?) - III

The melody of this phrase ends on the fifth scale degree, so I imagine the best chord to begin the consequent phrase is V.
>>
>>60189570
you could call the III a V/VI and start the phrase with VI. it would have to be a dom7 because of the fifth scale degree. I don't know the melody but I'll spitball some chords

VI - IV/bVII (meaning the flat seven of i is in the bass) - vii(dim) - i
sorry I don't have a piano to check myself, but that attempts to keep the chromatic thing going

Oh, I hadn't considered that possibility. Thanks.

I'm a bit confused about what you mean with the IV/bVII, though. Could you spell it out, in, say, c minor? (Since my melody is in that key.)

How are suspended chords written in numerals? Would IVsus4 be correct?
>>
>>60193243
What's confusing you precisely?
>>
What's the context? Is the suspended 4th going to resolve downwards (to a simple IV chord)? If so it's not really worth notating as separate from the IV chord (though you could note the suspension independently).

How do you produce music if you don't know chords?

Anyway, the roman numerals represent the chords in whatever key you're in. Key of C, I is C major, ii is Dm. V/V is a secondary dominant, in this case it's D major (the fifth chord up from G, which is the fifth chord up from C). Help at all?

Whoops. Meant to quote >>60195047.
>>
>>60195177
how do you denote other types of chords? Is it just a shorthand teaching tool?
>>
>>60195197
Major triads are either Maj, maj or rarely M.
Minor triads are m or min.
Diminished triads are dim.
Augmented chords are + (for example, FAC# is F+

I could go on with sevenths or certain chromatic triads if you wanted. But I have no idea how tone clusters and quartal/quintal chords are notated. Personally I'm fond of integer notation (writing them out based on their position on the chromatic scale).

>implying music theory matters

>>
>>60186883
ii-v-I rules, get out.
>>
>>60197302
If I wrote something catchy that people like, that I don't like, it wouldn't matter to me.
>>
>>60186823
I'm not saying it ruins a song or something this simple is played out, but I actually get so annoyed when I hear shit indie bands with big huge produced music, and the songs are just an overblown I - iv - v. I can't imagine the type of person who writes a song that simple and devoid of any imagination, and then proceeds to write this big-deal melody, and cake it in big-deal production. Have they never gone outside before? Do they listen to music?
>>
>>60197302
I write catchy things that people like and my rule is that if I'm using a musical cliche then I at very least build on it, as opposed to just cutting and pasting convenient cadences that don't go anywhere.
>>
>>60197302
>>implying any of you wouldnt give your left testicle to be able to write a catchy I-IV-V tune that people like

>making music people like instead of stuff you like

by following that formula the the matrix movie would never be made because many saw the movie and said "wow I would never think of that idea"

>>
>>60191572
Lol I like this guy
>>
>>60194618
So what's the difference between V/V and II then?
>>
>>6019918
It's a matter of the function of the chord. Technically no difference but there are some implications.

V/V will almost always resolve to V

V/V is usually major/dominant in a major key, II is usually minor (written as ii).

I'd write D7 G7 C as V/V V I
But D- G7 C as ii V I
