yeah well they didn't really do themselves any favors with the last site update. It looked like a desperate attempt to "modernize" their site so they could make more money. I think even less people would want to use their site now, hence the enormous backlash from their core audience.

They've been losing money for years, the site "update" just was the worst in a string of bad decisions.
There were so many ways to monetize the site obvious to even someone with no business sense like me, yet their subscriber features catered to autists only.
The last big thing they tried? Last.fm Originals, i.e. super exclusive sessions with third-rate musicians - I'm sorry, but that's not gonna fly on a site supposedly for music enthusiasts.

The best thing out of the ordeal is some promising alternatives finally having a reason to develop. Look out for hatchet.is and ListenBrainz sometime next year.
