Why is reverb important?
>>
I've recently been trying to make melodies, but I end up wit stuff I don't like.

I then listened to some stuff, and played my guitar along to it (improvising), and found that something really generic that I'd just discard, would do great when paired with 2-3 other countermelodies/rhythms.

I'm going to try and make more heavily layered music now.
>>
>>55638166
hides imperfection.
artificially makes the sound bigger.
>>
>>55638166
Because some things sound better if the notes lasts longer, but don't blend into each other too much.

Properly utilized silence in music is a good thing though.
>>

Some kind of weird sample based song. Idk. I just don't want prod to die ;-;
>>
>>55638182
>I'm going to try and make more heavily layered music now.
It needs more layers
>>
anybody else start too many things and lose track of them all because you don't know where to go with them? i just started a new folder because my old one was getting so full of half-made songs and i already have like 40 projects started in the new folder
>>
>>55638325
I often start new things out of impulsivity and It takes weeks or months to get back to some things.
A lot of stuff is also unfinished because I juggle a lot of stuff in my life though.

I think this is just how most producers work, when they're just starting out especially. I used to finish like one thing a month maybe, but always had like dozens of half-made beats laying around. Now I'm really forcing myself to finish everything I start, but I still end up with lots of junk.

How do i make the bass feel more "glued" to the track? Atm i feel like it's very separated. it's only 3 sine waves combined. and how do i make the guitar feel more fleshy?
>>
>>55638846
it feels disconnected because it's a really clean synth in a song that's all natural sounds otherwise. Try layering it, or just replacing it, with a real bass.
>>
>>55638846
>How do i make the bass feel more "glued" to the track?
The bass needs to be twangier.

>how do i make the guitar feel more fleshy?
Have you tried double tracking it?

The bass needs more treble, and the guitar needs more bass I guess.
>>
>>55638902

at a certain point there isn't much you can do to increase the volume without expensive mastering software or just having your projects mastered. basically the difference between home recordings and professional recordings is mastering (and proper, professional mixing before that)
>>
>>55632369
Congrats OP on the signing.

How do you guys file all your sounds. I have hundreds of samples I've made & collected over the years which are in a main sample folder but overtime i make a new track in Logic I think it saves all the sounds used in that project into a project folder,as does my other 2 DAWs and then my sample editing software saves files somewhere else! It confuses the fug out of me is there any dis-advantage to directing them all to my sample folder so literally everything I make /prod/ wise is in one folder?

This board moves waaaaaay too fast for musician threads (except /gg/, I mean who doesn't play guitar).

/mus/ needs to be a thing. Maybe we can make it happen in another chan-style imageboard.
>>
>>55648472
It seems like since musicians are relatively a minority, minority threads like
>woodwind instruments general
wouldn't get enough attention, leaving /mus/ dominated by /gg/ and /prod/, which doesn't seem like it'd be enough to warrant it's own board.
I'm pretty exhausted and am just spouting intuitive thoughts that aren't thoroughly thought through though.
I haven't accounted for actual statistical data, or possible counter points to what I'm saying.
>>
>>55648920
But you wouldn't need to post in general threads, woodwindfags would go like "where my woodwind bros at" and discuss whatever woodwindfags like to discuss.

I hate being harsh but the part at 1:04 just sounds bad. especially the very first bar of it, too choppy and artificial imo.
>>
>>55650985
I like vinyls because there's an element of randomness to it. I grab some vinyl because the cover looks stupid or something, then I have to make something out of that. It's like, strengths through limitations in a sense.

Plus the physical side of it means it sounds differently, and I can fuck with it on my player

This is surprisingly listenable for someone's first thing. Before 103, I would add another part specifically designed to build tension. Transition is too rough. Also the popping, I guess from the reverse synth, should be smoothed over imo (try compression).

dope shit, what your setup.

any tips in making shit like this, see that more aus people are making this kinda style shit.

bit like early flume / chet faker.
>>
>>55655278
thanks man. yeah the aus music culture is growing a lot lately.

the biggest thing that changed my perspective on making music and helped me improve my sound a lot was to turn literally everything into audio.
bounce out every stem every midi track, everything.

Then manipulate the audio, you get these neat little artifacts in the sound that happens accidently on purpose and it is the most inspiring thing ever when you're writing a track and something happens that sounds fantastic.

My setup at the moment is just my Macbook Pro, my iPhone for recording random samples, some nice cans and 2 sets of good monitors.

I have a lot of decent plugins too because all my previous work cash went straight into software.

I also borrow a friends ms-20 occasionally and back when I was at school I ran as much shit through tape as I could.
>>
>>55654950

>>
>>55655421
>manipulate the audio, you get these neat little artifacts in the sound that happens accidently on purpose and it is the most inspiring thing ever

Not that guy but, manipulate in what ways? I am curious, your stuff sounds really good
>>
>>55655505
Thanks!

for starters I love to resample stuff over and over.
An example would be, writing a synth line with a single saw osc, then bouncing it as audio, pitching it down 2 octaves, bouncing again, pitching it back up 2 octaves, bouncing it again, adding a super wet small decay reverb, bouncing it, adding any sort of modulation, rebouncing etc.

It's a pretty lengthy process, but it's a lot of fun once you learn the interesting effects that sort of stuff does to audio.
It does mean you have to use EQ a lot more to clean out the shit you don't want, but yeah.

Also this may be really bad practice, there may be easier ways to do it. I'm in no way trying to speak as an expert on it.
>>
>>55655547
That does sound like a lot of fun , thank you for the reply
>>
>>55655581
No worries!

Oh and I forgot to say the best bit, chopping the audio up manually and placing bits where they weren't orginally so it jumps from note to note. It's a very specific sound but I love it so much.

With the noise reduction it's fine.

I don't think there's anything weird going on in the export settings.

Also, here's an earlier version that doesn't have the buzz: https://clyp.it/3whg0nh0
The only thing I changed in the other version is a channel thing for an instrument that gets used several bars later. I cannot think of any reason why that would generate a buzz when exporting the whole thing.
But I'll try taking something out of that that channel.

I downloaded Fishman's Long Season Part 1.
I then cut some parts at random, and rearranged them at random (well, the process was relatively random).
Now, It's my original work of art.

I'm not even making fun of certain artists, I just though it'd be fun to spend my 20min of free time doing this (and it was).

Now I'm curious about the legal applications of this.

At what point does a song become original?
Does the process of how something similar to another piece of work is created affect the originality in legal eyes?

In the end, a majority of music is using the same notes, same instruments, same time signatures, same musical keys, and various other things.

When we use notes to make music, we're using parts of other people's music, but it's already cut for us, we just past them in the areas we want them to be at.

Generally speaking, of course.

How do you guys think aphex twin comes up with his music, like the general thought process
>>
>>55667551
he probably gets a melody in his head and then writes it down, then he builds chords and a bassline to is, then he just dicks around with the drums, making patterns and shit... not in that order most likely, but it has to be something like that
>>
>>55667940
I always thought that the drums come first
Also general question, what are your thought process on making a track?
I always start with the drums, than the bass and the melody after that
>>
>>55667983
depends on what type of music you're going for. i so the same as you except i do the bass after the melody cause making bass is a pain for me
>>
>>55667983
same as my last post, >>55667940
except I don't really hear melodies in my head, but it does start from some sort of melody, and I work on drums until I'm happy with the harmony
>>
>>55668287
I don't* work on drums until I'm happy with the harmony
>>
>>55667983
Typically i'll make either a bassline or a lead melody and then i'll add drums/pads and then details after that.

Hey guys, hoping you can help me with something.

I'm self taught and I use ableton. Obviously mixing is a pretty complex beast but I think at least I've sort of found how to get all my instruments to their rightful place and volume, the problem now is that my tracks sound flat and brickwalled. So the question is, how do I get that extra oomph to make it more dynamic and more professional and polished? Is this something with my mixing or is it more about EQ's or is it the issue of a master? Should I be using less instruments and sort of go for a less-is-more approach to my songs? Are there in-house effects that I should be using?

In pic related, can you see how my track (top) is basically a wall of sound and the other track is very dynamic and polished? Here's the track if that'll help identify the problem: https://clyp.it/egssykg5

Any advice is appreciated, thanks guys

TL;DR: How to make tracks sound more professional and polished?

change the notes, it could be the same instruments through out, but change the note sequences to keep it interesting
>>
>>55669705
(not the Anon you replied to)
Add 3 more movements after what you already have.
>>

You could keep the notes the same, but change the rhythm a little more here and there.

I tried playing that stringed instrument sounding riff in the beginning on my guitar, had to adjust the tuning of my guitar a few microtones to get the right pitch.
Microtones being less commonly used, music that uses them could be considered relatively more original.

Hi /prod/

How do I make a bass like in this track?

https://soundcloud.com/bluremusic/blure-cycle-of-life-1k-likes-thank-you

It sounds like a generic dubstep bass that's been "hollowed out" for want of a better description, can't really think of where to begin. 0:46 is a good example
>>
Any legit ableton 9 users can download this and upload the folder for me ?

The first track I'd say I was really inspired for, and pretty good considering I'd only been producing a few months

>3. Post a technique or trick that altered the way you produced from the moment you figured it out
Nothing earth-shattering... I made a huge template track with a lot of drum sounds that I use on most projects, which is pretty cool

>4. Post a picture of your setup
pic related, pretty old now though

>5. Post your opinion on using presets
Go for it, as long as you modify them though. But you're going to have to learn to synthesise sounds from scratch as some point, better to do it sooner rather than later

I cannot get over the fact that gladiator has a certain tone to it when using the super saw or multi saw options I can't get away from it. it's also very thin, sonically. wired little synth what do you use it for?

any of yall got sample folders? i'm looking to produce garage and jungle

I can't even make the dubstep bass to begin with.

The first tutorial I watched years ago just taught me how to do basic lfo rate stuff
>>55669630
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-5Xv9lqvJ8

I tried watching a nother tutorial, but couldn't figure out how to make it 'wub' to my control.
I think I know what I did wrong, but I just gave up on writing dubstep.
I'll try again within a month or two though.

I can do it generally, only with massive though. And it's kind of hit and miss, sometimes it just sounds meh. I just can't get anything like the sound in that track

It kind of sounds like what you'd get if you turn down the tone knob on a guitar and use the neck pickup, and pluck closer to the 12th fret.

Plucking closer towards the middle of the strings causes one to produce a sound with less dynamic (sounding less plucky).

Turning down the tone knob filters out the higher frequencies.

Using the neck pickup makes it sound warmer, I'm not sure how, but it seems intuitively similar to how plucking towards the center of the guitar strings works.
>>
>>55662609
i started making a thing that samples this, but i don't know where to go with it now

after spending a while on massive i've realized tht it;s junk. sure it can make some good sounds but compared to all the stuff out there it's just to.. robotic and cheap sounding. i really like the interface of massive tho any other similar synths that much more organic?
>>
>>55671540
are you listening to the right track breh? Doesn't sound anything like a guitar
>>
>>55671727

What I'm generally saying is
>if the synth was a guitar
>and it had controls like a guitar
>it sounds like what it'd sound like if you used the neck pickup, strummed closer to the 12th fret, and turned down the tone knob

Buildup is too long for my taste.

I find that the build up is even a little too minimalist for EDM.

I'm typing this and the buildup is still going on.

Is the whole thing build up?

It's a little minimalist for my taste.

I'm now at 4:30 and it seems like it should've been added a long while ago.

My ship has sunken.

I was lucky to just be browsing 4chan on my phone while it happened.

Everybody was panicking.

I quickly ran to the nearest lifeboat, but it was already departing once I got there.

I ran and jumped into the water, hoping that I could quickly swim to the lifeboat.

I went into the water, and it was very cold, shockingly cold.

I started swimming up, and finally breeched, taking a large breath of air.

Some people on the life boat noticed me, and gestured for me to hurry up towards the lifeboat.

I swam towards them, and their arms were reaching out to me.

A piece of lumber from the boat fell onto the lifeboat, sinking it.

Something shortly fell onto my head and rendered me unconscious.

I awaken on an island, with a woman next to me.

She told me that she was on the lifeboat when it sunk, and that she wasn't injured and swam me to shore.

I look around, and there are about 3 other survivors.

We built a camp, and are resting now.

My sister said I was stupid for buying this waterproof case for my phone before the trip, that it was a waste of money, but now I can brows 4chan while we wait and hope a rescue team will find us.

>the buildup is still going on
>>
>>55674192

enjoy your over bloated file sizes.

you want to be exporting 192kbps .mp3 If you want to upload to clyp,it and have it actually playable by people. WAVs are too large.
>>
>>55674192
do we have a /prod/ castaway here?

or am I being rused?
>>
>>55675341
>not even 256 or 320
why not just go with 64kbps, think of all the space you'd save!
>>
>>55675778
192 is all you need.

audio scientists chose 128 because the human ear cant detect any higher quality. I'm no audio scientist, but I feel 192 is a good middleground. it still sounds amazing, and doesn't chew up space like a WAV file.

although I do export mp3's in 320 when I'm giving someone a final track for a movie or sound installation, or something that's going to be played on a large system.

how do i intro?

https://clyp.it/k3rqcf2q
>>
>>55676089
easy in this case
>very light drums that build up towards the point you've posted
>use synth that is playing the main melody that comes in at 0:2 but have it play something more simple and sparse to create buildup
>fade in bass over duration of intro if you want
>throw in some kind of sample or other synth only featured in the intro and any breakdowns to add interesting texture
grammy winner m8

just listen to trax similar to yours (so in this case chiptune or w/e, you should know hopefully) and find intros you like and use them as 'inspiration'. you are doing it subconsciously anyway, so you might as well make it your intention to copy and make structuring a hundred times easier (not saying shit, literally everyone does it, its impossible to make music that isn't influenced by what you listen to in some small or big way)
>>
>>55676229
>its impossible to make music that isn't influenced by what you listen to in some small or big way
What if one makes a song intentionally removing any 'influence' of others?

>study music you've listened to
>really study that shit
>you now know what not to do
>start writing song
>often cross reference the WIP and your study material to make sure it sounds nothing alike
>profit?

In a way, this influences the music by the literal definition though.
>>
>>55676355
>What if one makes a song intentionally removing any 'influence' of others?
impossible, m8
>implying intentionally not copying / using motifs other artists use isn't them influencing your music but in an opposite manner of negation

>In a way, this influences the music by the literal definition though.
aye lad
>>
>>55676229
lol all i do is copy, i just can't come up with a good quick intro yet (it's gotta be very short, i might only add another half measure)

at this point i have to figure it out more detailed compositionally, do I use a dominant to xfer, do I do a longer intro and modulate up a m3 to the verse, (cuck me, im gonna try that now fuck)
