where I live, yeah, buildings can look pretty run down and old and there's a fair amount of litter too. Not nearly as much as many other cities but it's there. But yea, the town center is immaculate.

Hmm, I really don't know much about NZ but I'll try and weigh up some advantages and disadvantages:
A lot of people say it's expensive to live here, but it can be super affordable: i just bought a fairly large take away for 3 dollars for instance. Grocery shopping can be expensive if you stick to a western diet (not sure about NZ, but trying to cook typical British meals is a lot more expensive here), but local produce is very cheap, as is eating out at hawker centers.

Owning/driving a car here is crazy expensive, but the public transport is insanely good and very cheap. (I've lived here 2 years and not once had a train delayed).

A common complaint is it's very sterile here, which is kinda true, being a new country means it doesn't have much in the way of a rich culture (although some areas outside of the town center are pretty distinct).

It's very safe: parents would feel comfortable letting 14 year olds walk home on their own at midnight.

Local's are pretty friendly, but there's also a strong Ex-pat community here, which can be sooo up themselves.

Local food is pretty good, not sure how it stacks up to NZ though.

Rent is generally pretty pricey, but not incredibly expensive for what you get (depending on how many are moving with you)

Also, you're at the heart of South-East Asia, and flights to places like Vietnam, Cambodia, ect. are found cheap and only take 2-4 hours (depending on where you're going)
