>Today’s music is amazing, you just have to dig deeper to find the good stuff.
>Beset on all sides by cookie cutter hip hop/trap trash pretentious limpdicked whiteboi indie “rock” bands

I mean the 80s had glam metul and the 90s had grungefags, but holy shit there used to be good stuff besides that. The most genuinely interesting band rn is Death Grips, because
>Hip hop
>No "muh nigga" lyrics
>Actual use of a based drummer

Where's today's Sinatras/Elvises/Danzigs/Springsteens?
>>
>searching "modern indie music" in Google
>digging deeper
>>
>>55327659
You obviously didn't dig far.
>>
If the most interesting current band that you found is because of stuff previously done by The Roots, Beastie Boys or Q-Tip you haven't even bothered to spend a single minute looking out stuff
>>
It's funny to hear /mu/ saying to dig deeper, because most of the board seems to have simply swapped billboard and rolling stone for pitchfork and fantano
>>
Frank Ocean is the new Sinatra
we don't need a new Danzig but Jeff Rosenstock is probably the best dude in punk right now
Father John Misty is like the new Neil Young

You'll probably hate all of these bands/people though, except maybe Jeff. Everyone likes Jeff.

I did do digging. I downloaded a shitload of new albums off sharethreads.

It's just that the passion doesn't seem to be there anymore. You hear Springsteen screaming his guts out on Badlands, and he means every word he wrote.
Most 80s hits, as cheesy as they are, are sung convincingly, and have melodies that soar.
70s disco had actual string arrangements and dynamic performances.
Muse had a good thing going, but now they're shit.

This shit band /mu/ prays to. I swear to God. Experiments are good, but it repeats so many times and builds and builds to nothing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zol2MJf6XNE

These shitlords appeal to "oh yeah we listen to like sixties records cause they're so experimental and cool", and because p4k says "it's like the 60s but with electronic producer auteurism and it sounds so modern not like those other wannabe bands lol" people believe it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wycjnCCgUes

Feels like most music is going backwards man, and I'm trying to find something that appeals to me and feels new and vital, but it feel like there nothing out there.
>>
>>55328052
People are saying dig deeper. /mu/core is not digging deeper.
>>
>>55327869

Well he's the best soul/R&B songwriter alive IMO, and even though he's black soul I think his music sounds a lot more Sinatra than say like, Isaac Hayes or Curtis Mayfield.
>>
>>55327950
They're practically different bands
So many bands have some blinders in their back catalouge, but that doesn't detract from the merit of their old material
>>
>>55328052
>music was better before
>music is going backwards
so you're saying that music is heading in that 'right' direction
>>
>>55328086
D'Angelo >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Frank Ocean
>>
>>55328052
Make some of your own music then you slimeball
I personally couldn't give two shits about 'the current state of music' because this has been said decade after decade, it's after hindsight that people see the merit of bands. No-one thought Black Sabbath would be as lauded as they are today, but they are.
I also have the entire history of music at my fingertips, I'll start to worry once I've worked through that
>>
>>55328065
Well that's kinda the whole point tho. You shouldn't need to dig deep to find good music to have listen to. Seems to me like every other era had pop music with more than a few redeeming features to it, like Elvis' voices made up for silly pop lyrics.

>>55328143
No. But I'm sure you get my point.

>>55328152
Black Sabbath aren't even THAT great, but they're a good band with catchy bluesy riffs. They're Cream but edgier. I'd give my left nut to have a band that good today with a voice as unique as Ozzy's tho.
>>
>>55328152
Also I do make my own music and it's precisely what I like listening to, but like most bedroom "artists" there's a high chance I'm not gonna get discovered.
So what's your point ultimately?

Wow, I actually feel like I was born in the right generation but this chart is fucking awful.
>>
>>55328149

I forgot about D'Angelo, he's the best black-soul artist alive for sure. Frankie sings blue-eyed soul better.

Two to three good albums doesn't constitute of a good reply.
Also Midnight in Paris syndrome/based Franku.

>>55328254
Ok man, how come tho? What's your point? I ain't here to win cyberarguments, I just wanna vent my frustration that I find today's music pretty shitty and also find some good counterarguments. Tbh I wanna be proven wrong. I want to listen to good music.

My point is how about you make the music which you believe should be made now, who cares if you can't make money from it, make the music for the artistry
I do, my soundcloud tracks have 30~ plays and I don't care, I like making it

I like all three of these, but really? How the fuck did you come to that conclusion?
>>
>>55328474
War on drugs sounds like a guy imitating Dylan over a Cure instrumental.

And holy shit this?!
>dat "muh hoeps and draems" chord progression and inspurationell guitarr octaves
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1lq40tR72Q

Sorry man but this is exactly the stuff I dislike the most.
>>
>>55328584
>dat "muh hoeps and draems" chord progression and inspurationell guitarr octaves

but you like MCR?
cause MCR is the same Jersey pop-punk as Gaslight, just with a different old-band influence (70s glam vs. Springsteen)
>>
>>55328610
Only comparable song I could really find is this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GW_umELS5w8
Which is my least favorite of their songs.

In contrast,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnsFN-lX6Aw

Chords that move internally, constantly changing arrangements, some slight chromatic movements, buildups (section leading to 1:45) etc. Last section is a pretty progression, but it feels earned, and built on everything that came before it instead of used right at the start to manipulate you into that state.

why

oh god why
