Why?

lmms because linux

i know its cool and all to have a unique os and support opensource but is there really any customization that you actually need that windows wouldnt give you?
>>
>>55272764
Because the program I'm using now doesn't sound realistic enough. It's not the same as the one in that picture, ironically
>>
pro tools 8 le

because i can work with it effortlessly and i had gotten a bunch of sweet plugins with it, not to mention the proprietary digidesign 8 mic pre rack digi 003+
>>
>>55272813
not the anon you quoted, but i believe there are performance improvements as well when using linux as there is no bloatware
>>
>>55272711
ableton

because it does the job better than everything else

Anybody know a decent cheap synth to make beats with?

Not him, but the low-latency Linux kernels are really the best way to record audio.

Finale, because I'm not a bitch who doesn't know how to score and compose real music.
>>
>>55273018
I'm guessing you just record live stuff? It would make sense.

If you're doing electronic music, though, that's some kind of next level bullshit and I would be both in awe of you and exasperated about the fact that you do this.
>>
>>55273018
that's ok anon it's not your fault
>>
>>55273033
Why would I return to that archaic piece of shit?

>Needing to convert my library from VST/VST3 to RTAS/AAX

>>
>>55273032

Go check out some of TAL's free stuff. Also MDA has some nice stuff, too.

If you're willing to dish out $550 or so get Komplete.

With about $200 (I think?) you can get Xfer Records's Serum, which is like a better version of Massive. Say what you will about Steve Duda/BSOD/Deadmau5's music, they're good at the technical stuff, immensely.
>>
>>55272940
i feel like the performance improvements really arent worth much if you've got a semi modern pc.
>>55273051
had never heard of this
>>
>>55273064
thats what i thought producing used to be before i tried it myself. just generating tones and adjusting the pitch until you have a song thats professional sounding.

now that ive tried it, i still realize that producing can be hard work, but i have a little less respect for the trade knowing that its all done on a piano roll and could be learned in and out in a few months.
>>
>>55273089
im not asking for YOU. i just want something to fuck around with on my PC. my laptop has LPX on it and im fine with that one as my main
>>
>>55273134
If you want something to fuck around in, get Reason. Logic Pro X is pretty good. I haven't used it since 8 but I'm pretty sure you can still ReWire Reason into it.
>>
>>55272813
dude linux is worth just for the package handlers and scrolling function.
>>
>>55273167
i dont know much about that one. I heard its more of a sound maker than an actual DAW, but then again ive never used it so i dont know.
>>
Ableton because I just got used to it
I don't believe that you could do anything with any other DAW that you couldn't do in ableton
>>
>>55272711
anyone use ardour?

hey mu, if i were to make some ambient/noise/industrial techno/synthpop-ish music, what program would you recommend? would i need any equipment? i've never done it before

OP asked to post programs. not hardware or instruments...

I use FL, Reason, Sibelius. FL for most of my production, use it for jobs and have a few very nice orchestral and specialist/ethnic librarires.
Reason I still use for its glorious piano refils, and Sibelius for actually scoring scores. Import MIDI data into Sib, and you're good to edit and finish a score.

As for actually writing music, I follow a couple of methods:

>record yourself singing or whistling melody, transcribe
>record MIDI data live with a MIDI keyboard to a click or freetime for sketches or... freetime sections.
>write at the piano, organ, accordion, guitar, cello, whichever instrument I'm writing at. write in pen on manuscript and fuck the mistakes.
>enter notes by clicking with the mouse in the DAW
>record live instrument as the basis of a track

lmao dude you clearly have zero idea of what producing is if you think it's all "done on a piano roll"

this from the guy who only needs audacity because "I haven't really needed any extra features that it's missing"

lmao

>>
>>55273793

do you have a full song? i like to play over stuff on guitar for funzies
>>
>>55273884
not yet I'm just making the drums for that. now I'm making some other shit and I'm really feeling it

you play guitar? post something. what do you think of my small clip of music?
>>
>>55273793
so lofi it may as well just be a recording of someone banging on the top of the mic
>>
>>55273902
>what do you think of my small clip of music

i loved it.. too short. I played it through crappy laptop speaker so there is no bass on my end.
>>
>>55273996
Lol yeah it's too heavy. It's just an idea anyways.. If I like it more I'll clear it up
>>
>>55274023
Awh man thanks. Yeah I have heavy kicks on it. It's short cause
I've had it and I've always thought about finishing it. So wait...you play something?

They're actual ableton developers who got tired of how much ableton was dragging their feet on desperately needed features.

It's more of a fork than a rip off.

its included with bitwig not standalone I think

its from people that used to work for Ableton, its pretty similar but way more fast imo

Reaper

Because it's easy to use and very configurable. You can do all the important shit and more.

I also like to have an overview at all times, so stuff like ableton annoys me.
And yes, i did try ableton. For a month actually.
>>
>>55274161
a "tracker"

its like a music maker for gameboy, but... well more
>>
>>55274157
>No one who takes a picture of their monitor can refer to themselves as 'Masterrace'

lol i didn't notices that thanks
>>
>>55274056
>So wait...you play something?

just guitar as a hobby. I mess with recording afterwards, but im not a composer in anyway.

the shit you guys do with daws is insane to me. I just plug in and hit rec. minor adjustments maybe. it's a hobby so i dont even save anything.(it's not good enough)
>>
>i just plug in and hit rec

i wish it was this easy
>>
>>55274250
play me something evil sounding
>>
>>55273545
oh hey another orchestralfag on /mu/. Never seen one before, I stalked you on the archives to listen to some of your stuff and you're good at the composing side but the digital realization stuff needs a bit of work lol.

https://clyp.it/u5ctsls3

this is the last thing I did with proper full digital orchestration (need to more but recently haven't had anything that's actually required it)
>>
>>55274316
not too shabby!

what libraries are you using?
>>
>>55274287

it is when you have your program setup right and all you do is play guitar(as a noob)
>>
>>55274347
yeah i know but naggers don't have money out here
>>
>>55274293

i'll make a thread tomorrow at 3 cdt 12hours from now. i need sleep.

>>55274373
bruh ima be 2 baked lmao weed
>>
>>55273053
Honestly, I use Audacity in conjunction with FL Studio just because I don't like fucking with FL Studio's record option for some reason.
>>
>>55274358
im confused.?
>>
>>55274382
well good maybe it'll sound okish lol

o tomorrow ..no today is 420 lol

i should really start try pot

PIano in blue
Imperfect samples fazioli
Spitfire Mural vol.1/2
LASS 2.0
Berlin woodwinds
Cinewinds, Cineperc, Cinebrass (gr8 brass)
VOXOS (my favourite for female choral elements)
Randy's celeste
Spitfire horns.
Spitfire harp.

only just scratching the surface there's a shitload of other libraries I don't use for much.
