General Jazz Discussion thread.

What do you think about jazz trombone? Who are your favorite trombone players? What are your favorite recordings that feature trombone?
>>
>>55111968
Jay and Kay obviously come to mind, with Albert Mangelsdorff, Julian Priester, Curtis Fuller or Grachan Moncur III. my favorite record featuring trombone would probably be Blue train (or, if we're talking about records with the trombone player as a leader then probably pic related)
>>
Is there jazz music that is fast, rhytmic and perhaps even agressive?
>>
>>55112142
So much
>>
>>55112130
Julian Priester is great. I'd love to see him get more attention on /mu/

Figured out this far. But are there any musicians that stand out in the genre? Like, the essentials.
I havent researched much, but seems like it used to be quite popular branch(?) /genre.

>>
>>55112344

go to a live show (at a jazz club) if you can, but not at a restaurant, unless you live in new york city because otherwise its going to be shit restaurant jazz.
>>
>>55112381

>>

An then either Tijuana Moods or Blues and Roots. It's a tossup

>>
why is literally all jazz from the 50's and 60's better than any jazz made in the past 20 years?
>>
>>55112802
because white people started playing it.
>>
>>55112802
>>55112822
Why are you both so bad at b8?
>>
>>55112840
Shitposting is easier than argumenting
>>
>>55112862
>argumenting
>>
>>55112716
This is accurate but I'd choose Blues and Roots over Tijuana Moods
>>

>>
>>55112716

I've discovered I really like the sound of two horns plus bass and drums (with no piano or guitar)

What are the best albums in this category?
>>
>>55113771
Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come is a classic with that lineup. His album Free Jazz is pretty much the same kind of ensemble but with two of each instrument if you like him.

Some other good albums to check out, all quite modern is
Eric Revis - In Memory of Things Yet Seen,
Alex Sipiagin - Overlooking Moments,
Joshua Redman - Back East,
Jeff "Tain" Watts - WATTS
>>
>>55113771
>>55114003
Oh and Sonny Rollins - Way out West is quite brilliant too
>>
i'm just getting started at jazz and i really like this interpretation of Steve Gadd/ Petrucciani and Jackson of So What.

>>
>>55114003

why jazz always have shit covers
>>
Not a big fan of jazz but looking for an album based around flutes or a single flutist. Underexposed to woodwinds.
>>
>>55115709
because most jazz fans are actually interested more in the music than just using the album cover as a neat accessory to show off your snowflake taste in a 5x5 last.fm thread

also the record labels usually design the album covers and usually try for a recognizable style
>>
>>55115884
Herbie Mann - Memphis Underground
Roland Kirk - I Talk With The Spirits
