I know many girls, most of which I know are interested in music to a certain degree which ranges from shallow to deep.
Evidently, I have noticed that those who share a shallow interest in music, those who are only interested in music as an object which allows them to dance, or to have a familiar and friendly background noise to everyday activities, etc. don't get to know as much music as the ones who share a deeper interest in music, since they (naturally) never even tried to (this applies to men as well). This means that the music that they listen to is liminited in quantity to the amount of music that they have come in contact with, mainly (if not exclusively) through mainstream media and the recommendation of people to whom they are close (parents, friends), so there is little variation to the music that they know.
However, even under these conditions, they don't all like the same music.
Just like you, OP, they apprehend that they like the little music that they listen to for certain reasons, and they understand that this forms a part of their identity exactly for that reason.
A girl (or a guy) may only know the old popular rock music her parents showed her and the new top 40 pop music she has listened to on the radio, on tv, in parties, etc. but she will still establish preferences based on her personal experiences or beliefs related to music and that will determine the way in which they interpretate the new music they come in contact with. That is taste.
