Włodzimierz Nahorny Trio- Heart (1967)

>post-bop, free jazz
>Multi-instrumentalist Wlodzimierz Nahorny begins and ends this record at the piano, for some fairly straightforward trio pieces along the lines of Bill Evans. He switches over to saxophone for the rest of the album for pieces that are very free and full of exciting and engaging enterplay between the trio. Volume 15 in the 'Polish Jazz' series.

The Lyrical Guitar of Pepe Martinez (1968)

>flamenco (flac, vinyl rip)
>The liner notes discuss the fact that there are two distinct camps when it comes to flamenco guitar, the fast and fiery style which is popular with younger (in 1968) players, and Flamenco Lyrico, which was typified in the past by players like Ramon Montoya, and now Pepe Martinez.

Dave Scott- Nonchalant (2009)

>post-bop, free jazz
>This quintet, led by trumpeter Dave Scott, plays very loose, very free music, but they do it with a rare sense of subtlety and restraint. If you’re only looking for loud chaotic music, this isn’t for you, but the group’s more reserved approach leads to plenty of exciting interplay that reveals itself with close listening.

Alex Sipiagin- Balance 38-58 (2015)

>fusion, post-bop, composition
>Sipiagin's latest addition to his growing output on the Criss Cross label. This album mixes rock influences with free-leaning improv in a way that's reminiscent of Joe Henderson's 70's output. This is all combined with Sipiagin's style of intertwining polyphonic melody writing.

>Bassist Richard Davis is known mostly for his work on Blue Note, where his flexible style of playing fit in well with players like Andrew Hill and Eric Dolphy. Later in the 70’s he also recorded several albums as a leader on the Muse label. This record consists of two 20+ minute jams by the quintet over several bebop standards, that move well beyond the realm of bebop during the solos.

>contemporary composition, improvisation
>Tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Chris Potter's most recent album builds on his usual "Undground Band" by adding a string quartet and vibraphone to to complete his 11-piece "Underground Orchestra." >Trumpeter Ted Curson recorded this album as an elegy for Eric Dolphy after his tragic death in 1964. The compositions are memorable and easy to follow, but the improvisations are often quite adventurous. The quartet follows the traditional “chordless” instrumentation of Ornette Coleman’s quartet.

The Gang Font featuring Interloper (2007)

>math rock, experimental, free improvisation
>This band utilizes influences from classic prog-rock acts like King Crimson or Zappa, but there are also elements of avant-garde and experimental artists like Captain Beefheart. The sound is ultimately rock, with overdriven guitars, repetitive basslines, and strong backbeats, but with complex, shifting-time signatures and song forms, as well as improvised solos and accompaniment, this album also draws some influence from classic avant-garde jazz players as well (especially from the keys player, Craig Taborn, who is becoming one of the most widely known pianists in contemporary avant-jazz.)

David Axelrod- Heavy Axe (1974)

>soul, funk, jazz
>This is a great blend of funky, jazzy soul. Axelrod includes some of his own interesting pieces but also does some great covers of tunes like “You’re So Vain” and “Cast Your Fate to the Wind.”

Rudresh Mahanthappa- Bird Calls (2015)

>post-bop, contemporary jazz
>This album is inspired by one of jazz's greatest legends, altoist Charlie Parker, but Mahanthappa wants to make it clear that this isn't just a tribute album. His reworking's of Parker's tunes are thoroughly re-imagined to fit Mahanthappa's modern style of alto playing. He takes elements of Parker's music, rhythms, snippets of melody, melodic shapes, and creates new compositions with them that lead to exciting and intense improvisations.

Jimmy Giuffre- Tangents in Jazz (1955)

>cool jazz, third stream
>Giuffre plays a variety of woodwind instruments and brings a unique contrapuntal approach to cool jazz. The approach is similar to that of the classic Gerry Mulligan quartet, but with Giuffre switching between different woodwinds, each tune has a unique texture.

Bernard Hermann- Vertigo Soundtrack (1958)

>soundtrack, neo-Romanticism
>Hermann's score for the classic Hitchcock film draws influence from composers like Wagner in the lush string arrangements and suits the tense and psychological nature of the film perfectly. The music also stands up well on it's own for those who have never seen the film.

this is decent but is there any jazz from this year that is adventurous without being made by some sober ass academic fuckers? Everything seems so empty from jazz these days bar an odd album or two a year.

Balázs Elemer Group- Early Music (2007)

>Barouque influenced European vocal improvisation
>This Hungarian group does a variety of vocal-led music. This recording takes its inspiration from Baroque and Renaissance compositions and puts a jazz spin on them. The arrangements are great, but it is the unique style of singing that really makes this album interesting.

what exactly do you find "sober" and "academic" about that album?

Maybe you'd like this. It's historic music but the musicians are obviously having fun playing it. Then again I don't really find Rudresh's album "sober" so I guess I'm just not really sure what you're looking for.

Tim Warfield- Spherical (2015)

>post-bop
>Saxophonist Tim Warfield has been compared to Coltrane but here he takes on the music of Thelonious Monk with a stellar band. Pianist Orrin Evans especially embodies the spirit of Monk's playing.

nah the playing is all right, like I said I think this is decent. But listening to the album and especially him talk, really reminds me of how sober and academic jazz has become (also something I felt to the new Vijay Iyer album). A lot of this is made by havard/berklee/something expensive grads who play expensive sit down concerts that I can't afford to go see... I don't know it just feels far removed from what jazz culturally used to be. I'm not saying all the artists need to be heroin addicts boppin around with Art Blakey but... yeah actually I wish I could go see that era again.

I still think it's pretty easy to find both kinds of music. If the more academic "art" jazz doesn't tickle your willy then maybe stay farther away from ECM as that's mostly what they produce.

I recommend the "Live at Smalls" and "Live at Smoke" record labels. Both tend to favor more swing-based, traditional jazz and a more relaxed, informal club atmosphere. Smalls also has a free nightly video stream of their shows which can be fun to check out.

John Escreet- Sabotage and Celebration (2013)

>progressive composition, free improvisation
>Pianist John Escreet takes influence from avant-garde jazz greats like Cecil Taylor and Andrew Hill, but he also takes elements from classical composers too. This album highlights his compositional skill, with a regular band plus a string quartet, for music that is very intense and energetic. The improvising is equally intense, and the piano solos are particularly abstract and free.

Alex Sipiagin- Steppin’ Zone (2001)

>post-bop, hard bop
>This was trumpeter Alex Sipiagin’s first recording on the Criss Cross label and it is very much in the post-bop swing tradition of Miles’ second quintet or Woody Shaw. The tunes are mostly straight-ahead swingers, but the solos are incredibly energetic and aggressive, helped out by the ridiculously hard-swinging drumming of Jeff “Tain” Watts.

>This is a live recording from the new “Live at Smoke” series recorded at Smoke Jazz Club in NYC. Evans is one of the most unique and inventive pianists around and this release captures him with a fantastic band playing a number of Evans’ interesting original tunes, as well as several re-imagined standards. There is also a racially themed poem recitation which is accompanied by the band.
