Arsenio Rodriguez- Quindembo/Afro Magic (1963)
>conjunto, Latin fusion
>Known for being more of a traditional conjunto tres player, Rodriguez mixes things up by adding saxophone to his ensemble and removing the trumpet and piano.

Craig Taborn Trio- Chants (2013)
>modern creative, improvisation, third stream
>Pianist Craig Taborn’s trio looks like a traditional piano trio (piano/bass/drums) but the final product doesn’t sound like any other trio out there. The music blends intricate, creative compositions, with tight, subtle group improvisation, making it difficult at times to tell where the compositions end and the improvisations begin. The unique sense of harmony and rhythm within the group almost gives it a sound that is closer to European modern classical music than jazz.

Chico Hamilton Quintet in HiFi (1956)
>cool jazz, hard bop, avant-garde, third stream
>This was one of the first studio recordings by Chico’s group which was released on the Pacific Jazz label. Fred Katz’s cello playing always gives this group a unique sound, but it is their contrapuntal style of improvisation that really makes them interesting. This record features some of the group’s original compositions, as well as a some interesting takes on standards.

Dr. Alimantado- The Best Dressed Chicken in Town (1978)
>dub, raggae
>Alimantado was a Jamaican DJ who became one of the most popular in the dub movement of raggae. A few other big names like King Tubby and Lee “Scratch” Perry guest produce on several songs.

Jeremy Pelt- Insight (2003)
>post-bop
>A great set of free-leaning post-bop from an extremely talented sextet. Each of the players contributes a unique sound to the improvisation, and the dynamic of the group as a whole really makes this record special. Recommended for fans of Miles’ second quintet, Herbie Hancock, John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter, etc.

Paul Bley/NHOP (1973)
>piano/bass duet, free improvisation
>Pianist Paul Bley teams with versatile bassist, NHOP for this duet album which features some of Bley’s most adventurous and experimental playing. In addition to acoustic piano, Bley also plays electric piano on several tracks, as well as plucking and strumming the strings of the acoustic piano.

Clare Fischer- Surging Ahead (1963)
>cool jazz, bebop, piano trio.

Chicha Libre- Sonido Amazonica (2008)
>chicha, Peruvian cumbia
>Chicha is a genre that took shape in Peru in the late 60's that blends traditional cumbia styles with rock music, especially surf/psychedelic rock. Chicha Libre carries on this tradition, bringing vintage surf-rock vibes to deep Latin grooves.

The Dynamic Sound Patterns of the Rod Levitt Orchestra (1963)
>hard bop, medium ensemble jazz
>Rod Levitt is a somewhat forgotten figure in jazz. This is a good example of his arranging and composition skills with a medium sized ensemble. His melodies and arrangements have a unique style about them and it leads to some interesting improvisation by the band.
http://www23.zippyshare.com/v/29836981/file.html
Fred Hersch and Julian Lage- Free Flying (2013)
>jazz, duet improvisation
>Hersch is a veteran pianist on the NY scene and Lage is a young guitarist who is just making a name for himself. This record captures the stimulating interplay between these two musicians in a duet setting.

Sahib Shihab and the Danish Radio Jazz Group (1962)
>hard bop, avant-garde
>This recording comes from Shihab’s time spent in Europe. He played as a sideman on a number of great recordings in the 50’s, but this is one of his best albums as a leader. His interesting charts for medium-sized ensemble lead to even more interesting improvisations.

Opus 5- Progression (2014)
>post-bop
>This is the third release from this makeshift quintet, made up of guys who play together as sidemen on a regular basis. On this record the group plays mostly original material that is very modern, but there is obviously a lot of influence from the tradition of post-bop quintets, especially the classic Miles quintet.

yeah. I can't upload it now but I'll do it next time I get a chance. Search the archive for it next week. It's a good group yeah?
>>53866366
aight thanks man
Yeah, they're insanely catchy but I feel like there isn't too much of an angle to their albums, aesthetically speaking.
I know I'm not explaining myself too well, but if there is any comparison to make, you should check out the Jean-Michel Pilc Trio's LP Welcome Home. It has more of an "angle" to it, but they might not even be the same sub-genre of jazz.

John Lewis presents Jazz Abstractions (1961)
>third stream
>This is Gunther Schuller's brainchild on merging jazz and classical music. With a band that includes Bill Evans, Eric Dolphy, Jim Hall, and Scott LaFaro, Schuller and Lewis present several original works as well as variations on Thelonious Monk's "Criss-Cross."
Looking for any of these sorts of albums:
Funky but still mellow with strong percussion and maybe some swing
Jazz that has recurring melodies and themes in general
Genres that take a different twist on the norm, e.g Like how Longseason by Fishmans is heavily influenced by dub music.
Sorry, I know its kind of specific but thats what I'm looking for. If anyone wants other suggestions I'll do my best to help out.
does anyone know some good country?

Alex Sipiagin- Destinations Unknown (2011)
>long-form composition, post-bop, fusion, free improvisation
>Sipiagin is one of the most talented trumpet players and composers around today. This album showcases his compositions with complex, contrapuntal compositions that have extended, multi-sectional forms. The compositions lead into improvisations that are extremely dynamic and free, with a very high level of interplay from the entire band, which consists of some of the brightest improvisors in contemporary music.

Dave Ballou- Dancing Foot (2004)
>free jazz, post-bop
>Continuing to push the envelope, Ballou presents his adventurous music here with the unique instrumentation of trumpet, 2 basses, and drums. Ballou’s music and approach to improvisation is unique in and of itself, but the concept of two bass players gives this music an even more interesting sound and concept of harmonic freedom.
