it's not about being a drone, the guy just went from writing from a very niche place (LIKE A SPRAINED ANKLE BOY NOTHING TO PLAY WITH) that only resonated with entitled half-blacks from Toronto, to writing universal tracks and embracing his genuine gift for song craft. Some of his earlier work is still laughably bad, but he's become a very difficult figure to hate based on his recent out-put.
