I really hate MBV fanboys and I swear I'm not one, but you really think you can make that concrete of a judgment after hearing an album just once?

That's the exact story behind Dinosaur Jr's cover of "Just Like Heaven". They listened to that album on tour, and that was the only song that ever clicked for them.

On the contrary, how can you be so slow in the head that you need more than one listen to decide whether it fits your tastes? Do you eat every dish twice too to decide whether it tastes good?
>>
>>53335581
I've returned to albums I didn't like after a single listen year later and ended up loving them. I used to hate broccoli when I was a kid, but now I love it. If your taste doesn't change, then you're probably pleb af.

Not sure if this is bait but that's a pretty ridiculous statement
So many things go into listening to an album - your current mood, location, events happening in your life, even your health. One listen to an album one day could be entirely different from a listen another day
If you really do just give music one chance I'm honestly a little depressed. I'm not saying you should listen to albums 15 times if they don't click immediately, but a few tries over the course of a month or two is totally reasonable and just a logical way to do it
>>
>>53334165
I don't get it, every single song they've put out sounds exactly the same

Can't Maintain has it's moments, but People is the only one you can listen to the end. Also on that topic I can't decide if it's a good or a bad thing if a band puts all the good songs on the first half of an album. On the upside you don't have to skip as much, on the downside you rarely ever venture into the second half.

best post I've seen on /mu/ on this subject
honestly if you only give something one try that's pretty weak. but if you're one of those people that listens to every acclaimed album 10 times to "get it" that's even worse.
also, there's something to be said about getting into certain genres. if you're not into music that uses the wall-of-sound technique, listening to mbv once might not be enough, and chances are a lot of shoegaze won't click for you.

Your body fluctuates mood and hormones and shit all the time, even if you do the same thing every day you'll have good ones and bad ones
>>53336012
For real, people also gotta realize that they might not love everything. 10 tries on an album is just wasting your own time, if you don't like it by then you probably never will
>>
>>53336064
Then get a life just for the music's sake, I did

Am I wrong to say that you can usually tell if an album is worth pursuing after a single listen? A lot of the time I'll listen to an album and won't really enjoy it, but it'll be on my mind for a while. Others I listen to and may like more, but don't really think about that much afterwards. Usually the ones I think about are the ones that get better with repeat listens, while the others get worse.

i think a common mistake is listening to an album and thinking "ehhh that didn't really feel like anything" or just getting a blank or maybe confused reaction. i've never actively disliked something and came back to it and liked it, but sometimes albums that just sound like nothing on first listen are really great the next time around. it's good to reminder yourself to go back to albums like that even if they're few and far between.
>>
>>53335778
I agree People is their best but I do enjoy most of their discography as well.

And what's wrong with never venturing into the second half if you don't like the second half? Doesn't seem like much of a downside
>>
>>53336046
he's right though; Shadow Kingdom is their only great album.
>>
>>53336550
>Centauri Agent
>Night Coercion
>Winter Ray
>>

I think that can be the case sometimes, but isn't usually what's going on. Like early on when I was getting into music I tried jumping into too experimental of music and I had no reference point and it didn't make sense to me. I walked away thinking that the music was forced and experimental for experimental's sake and didn't give it any more thought. But then a year or two later came back and it all came together in my head much easier and really clicked.

I guess what I'm getting at is that some music requires more experience for lack of a better word to even make any sort of impact at all. Not saying you have to be patrician, but knowing points of reference and influences of music definitely helps. I'm definitely oversimplifying this whole issue but I hope it makes sense.

I think Halcyon Digest has tracks worth coming back for individually (notably the first and last ones) but I can see how its overall appeal drops significantly over time
