reposting from last thread that died

So I was making this and just out of curiosity changed the bpm of the song to really fast and the result blew my mind. Started trying to make something slow and chill for the /prod/ EP but it seems i can only make high bpm stuff sound good. Which one do you like more, /prod/? I'm trying to pick and while I like the fast paced one more I still want to make something slow and chill. Been working on it for like 70 minutes; glad to finally have a track I actually like.

https://clyp.it/txbswehq

I guess I could develop both but just make sure I don't use the same sounds/instruments. keep in mind i havent been doing this shit for more than 1 month and a half ;~;

Would like some feedback on this house track i've been working on

Thanks, I understand. How do I, though? I was really just laying notes down semi-randomly and keeping the ones that sounded good. I thought it sounded cool; but do you have any online resources I can use to learn2compose? I'd really appreciate them cus having to hear and rehear my shit to see which notes sound good and which dont is too time consuming.

I was trying to stay in the same ''key'' or whatever that means by using more or less the same notes but in different order and rhythms.
>>
>>53245124
just learn piano, and then learn music theory. learn how to read sheet music, it's really easy and you can look at theory kind of visually like that

>>53244738
Reminds me of myself. I like the guitar work, but the lyricism is pretty 1st grade. Just keep writing to build your chops; use music, television, visual art, a drug trip, a first aid class or whatever and use whatever hits you personally to convey a message as opposed to "why am i so ronery".
>>
>>53245401
thanks for the input dude. well i usually write about actual world stuff, but some girl problems happened yesterday. so those lyrics are very personal and mean something, it's not just tfw no gf.
>>
>>53245460
Hurt feelings are pretty easy to convey, but it's so far done, that "Why does no one wanna be with me" doesn't begin to peak interest. In life, depression is a commodity; yours better come with a puzzle on the back or a prize in the box.

This reminds me a little bit of Afrika Bambassta/SoulSonic Force, which I like. The accompanying square synth should be a bit louder though.

>>53245314
Are you making trance? Otherwise, the high end on the lead/pad synth should be notched on the high end, and the flanger on the percussion in the second half feels weird.

I made a synth-pop thing today. Would like some feedback.

The synth lead at 1:08 and harp(?) at 1:21 could stand to be a bit more prominent, loved the ending, sounds like a set up for another track.

>>53246366
What mean by that is to take away a band in the audio frequency while leaving the surrounding frequencies intact. Depending on your DAW/EQ plugin, there could be a notch filter option that does that for you. Otherwise, you would simply lower the overall volume of the synth, then add high and low frequencies to the synth if you want less middle frequencies on that synth.

>>53246570
Thanks you for the critique. I was thinking of getting rid of that synth at 1:08 because it didn't seem to fit. The harp is actually a part of the sample I was using and I may need to EQ my sample track a bit more so that is less prominent. The ending is actually a set up for the second part for the song.

>>53246585
Not really, though soundcloud threads are usually unyielding for critiques unless you're one of the first posters in the thread or you're the OP of the thread, which is probably why people are posting soundcloud stuff in this thread.
>>
>>53244152
Man this song is pretty weird. You need to add more pitched elements to assist and develop that melody in a way that's coherent. I do think the bends in the synth lead are programmed well.

>>53247860
You're welcome.
>>
>>53247860
Ahh damn. Well here's this thing that I've done lately to get songs finished. You setup a bunch of loops and midi controller mappings (have a controller plz) and then press play/record and jam. By jamming you end up creating a lot of the "mass" of the song. If you really get into it sometimes the song can come out a lot more coherent than if you were editing on the timeline. You can edit the recorded jam afterwards or you can leave any mistakes as part of the song and move on to the next one. At least it makes music making fun again. Try it friend. and I've been producing since around 2007.

>>53247990
Its totally fine if you have more than one thing going on in the same frequency range. Put your speakers up pretty loud and try to mix the song like that, but don't do it for too long.
>>
>>53248094
>tfw no controller

I hope to have one before the year ends.
>>
Btw anyone else ever mix loud, like really loud, sometimes?
>>
When all the "let's make an album" thing happened I started making a song with one guy from /prod/, only because he was using bitwig just like me. After a week missing, he just emailed me telling me that he is in antarctica doing research on the ice and that his internet for personal use is almost null.
Does anyone else have some secret exciting life or are you just bedroom producers when not busy being NEET?
>>
>>53248150
I generally mix loud at first, then turn my volumes in the mix all the way down to something like -30/-20 DB, then turn up the master using a plugin, and compress/eq the master as I please.

>>53248170
I'm going to community college getting my GE done to transfer to a university so I can study visual design for media, like character design and other things like that.
>>
>>53248170
I'm in antarctica too right now actually. damn it really is a small world.
>>
>>53248221
>-30/-20db
That made me uneasy for a second because I have this irrational fear of bit depth and signal to noise ratios. Even though I have 24 bit I still always try to avoid doing stuff like that out of habit.
>>
>>53248221
I meant like turning up your monitors really loud and mixing like that, is that what you meant?
>>
>>53248094
really? thought if they were the same frequency they would kinda clash. i mean i kinda hear it it's pretty subtle but idk what to take away from what.
>>
>>53248322
No. I meant having my internal channels in my DAW at -10/+6 DB. Mixing loud on speakers isn't practical for me since I share a room with one other person.

>>53248308
Yeah. I only mix like that so that way if I wanted one channel to be significantly louder than the others, and I don't have to worry about having having that channel overpowering the mix since I have more control of the volume.
>>
>>53248358
Nah I mean think about how heavy metal has to be mixed. A human can discern sounds stacked on top of each other totally fine I think. Boosting frequencies works really well too. Try simply turning up or turning down the volume of a track if you're not getting good results. I think Chris Lord Alge said something once about making everything louder than everything else. Post a link plz.

Hey /prod/, some of us guys thought we could use a project to help us all be creative, and we came up with this.

You have the whole of February to make 1 EP containing up to 15 tracks at a max total length of 15 minutes. Anybody is allowed to submit any content under any artist name, provided it's your own material, not offensive and not OLD material! No folder dumps! There are no genre restrictions, make anything you want.

Submit your EP in a ZIP to mikewestaudio (at) gmail.com , together with all relevant info, before March 1st.

The final result will be compiled into one MASSIVE digital release - including top of the line mastering, provided that you don't brickwall your tracks. It will be available on bandcamp as pay-what-you-want and ALL proceeds will be donated to the international charity Medicines Sans Frontieres / Doctors Without Borders.

So, what excuses have you got? Try something new out, challenge yourself, just do some music. Let's go!
>>
Hey guys, I got pointed this way by a helpful mutant.

I recently installed FL player 11 and was having serious problems with it. I ended up abandoning it due it not picking up my M-Audio box and essentially I couldn't record. After googling I couldn't really find a problem solver. So I ask, what is a good starting DAW?

Use them. I've got a pair of M-45s that have been my goto cans for years. If the M-50s are anywhere near as good, you'll be happy.

Don't spend too much time producing in cans though, spare your ears and spend most time on the stereo, do the fine mixing in your headphones. Also switch a lot.
