I do know what experimentalism and I prefer it to not be a snooze fest. Seriously this album makes Ryoji Ikeda seem like Merzbow. I am also quite familiar with dada, fluxus, and other performance art circle jerks. In my ignorant opinions this album is nothing more than masturbation.
>>
>>52924302

That's why you don't get it. You don't realize that a sparse album such as GMGN can be played even when you're not in the mood for music at all.
>>
ITT: Death Grips retards and memerap fans don't get art

>there's people who ca't appreciate the absence of "sound" that makes the realization that notes and music are not "sound" but an extension of silence, silence void of its absolute characteristic (something cannot be partially silent; if something breaks the silence then no silence can be, but silence lies and coexists, and is ultimately the point of all sound, as sounds extinguish and turn into silence, not in a sudden fall from "one state" to the "other" but as the result of a constant movement, a movement that onkyo reveals in its apparent void state: sound is not a negation of silence but an affirmation of it) in a continuum of negation and affirmation which is itself a revelation of what is there but is not heard, the materialization of the non-perceptible and thus the perception of the non-perceptible-turned-perceptible against and because of the imprisoning western rationality

you're fundamental insistence that music be "enjoyable" (something i challenge you to define adequately) just continues to dig you a hole of ignorance. music is an artistic medium that offers so much more than simple twitching of the ass or a burst of adrenaline to the ballsack. it can transcend the hypermasculine and highly culturally fascistic and "historical" and reach to heights that we can sometimes only rationally comprehend.

your problem with sachiko is that he is not "emotionally resonant" but i argue that 1. this is one person's single composition (okay, two if you listened to the whole guide) and you might genuinely not agree with his approach/find something in it 2. if we expand this to be the avant garde in general with specific focus on the contemporary (last five years of EAI and Onkyo) i genuinely believe your lack of efficacy is based on one of two possibilities: either you are unable to identify with a rational ecstasy (i.e., feeling rhapsody at the feeling of a Good Idea the way some Enlightenment philosophers would describe it who seem to be the lens you're using to analyze your music since you demand "heights of experience" or something) or you refuse to approach these artists with the same curiosity and wonder you approach Scaruffi pieces. the reason i make this assumption is because i was once a Scaruffi acolyte and know i listened to the pieces with Scaruffi's reviews right next to them to explore them and it was this engaging of the material through one critic's perspective then more and more that created my love of music in the first place, and that was expanded when i went beyond one critic's ability to form an argument or analysis of a piece.
>>
>>52924601
>Oldish.

Dada is literally 100 years old dude. It's only place is in Art history. I can immediately recognize people that don't have a clue about modern art when they start namedropping Dada as influence for what they're doing in the god damn 21st century. Onkyo has nothing to do with dada anyways.

>>
>>52924416
i'm really honestly finding you a bit pitiable given that your boorishness and refusal to fairly approach this music that has given me such joy has led you to not only disengage the material but actively rebel against those who appreciate it. i don't claim that there is some objective value to the things i like; upon further listening you might come up with the same conclusions you've somewhat hastily made already. but to rob yourself of the experience is one thing. to attack others for a difference of opinion is destructive, unnecessary, uneffective, and betrays the very white pretensions your music taste indicates you have.

i'm assuming you're a white male ages 15-20 living in a so-called first world country who likes science and logic a lot, has a bit of an artistic side, and self-describes as atheistic without having a firm grasp on the theological complexities that exist in the world because you believe in coming to quick conclusions as opposed to allowing yourself to have open ended questions. a scientist, not a philosopher or religious man. your taste suits you, but it doesn't interest me, and your insistence on "trolling me" isn't being validated here with anger but looked upon as childish.

Dada was only significant as a response to impressionism. It's literally like quoting Louis Armstrong as an example of the avant garde musical aesthetic in 2015.

You're a poser try-hard. End of story.
>>
i like his jazz stuff a lot more.
>>
>>52924812
Dada was a response to art in general, obviously it succeeded a movement.
And yes, its possible to paraphrase louis armstrong to explain today's avant-garde music.
The core concept of avant-garde is always the same regardless of the movement, or the year.

Almost all art in the last century has taken the position of "anti-art" it's the most tired aesthetic that anyone could adopt. So called experimental musicians have become way too lazy. Instead of creating anything with any depth or significance they fall back on namedropping Marcel Duchamp and other cheap "anti-art" gimmicks. Improvisation in general has become a self-indulgent wankfest, but especially timbral improvisation like Onkyo and other EAI.

Most so-called avant garde music has become a caricature of itself, and only disciplined composers will be able to turn this trend.

I'm honestly just embarrassed by all of the kids that think they're listening to avant-garde music in this album.

They thought they were finally cool. All the cool kids on RYM were listening to it, so they went on 4chan to look for a download link. Both sides arguing in this thread are acting autistic

The idea of just exploring sounds in that manner has been done before (fuck, just look at all the weird 70s synth wankery albums out there) and IS art and is necessary for people to use those discovered sounds in new ways later on

Description of onkyo taken from RYM:
>Onkyo is a kind of Japanese music that focuses on the exploration of the physical traits of sound rather than music as a form of expression. Since onkyo is based solely on these actions of the musicians with their works, the genre is inclusive to a variety of different musicians and aesthetics. Still, performances are minimal with the inclusion of large gaps of silence; as well, these performances tend to be stoic, but this last feature is not a requirement for something to be classified as "onkyo."

Some entry-level onkyo:
>Taku Sugimoto - Opposite
>Toshimaru Nakamura - Maruto
>Sachiko M - Sine Wave Solo
>Yoshimitsu Ichiraku - The Music of Surround Panner
>Toshimaru Nakamura - No-Input Mixing Board (he's got loads of albums of this sort of stuff and it's really interesting)

Need something with actual duration, sorry :/

>>52930820
Yeah, they have a special place in my heart.

>>52930852
Cool, this is what I was looking for. Thanks!

most of those repeat the concept of that Gerogerigege flexi

Has to be a full recording.
Now, if I could find the first recording ever with absolutely no sound (but with duration), that would be great!
>>
>>52931008
Could you rec me some really minimal monotone drone that doesn't sound like a dog whistling but more earthy?
>>
>>52931107
I'm not into drone, sorry :/
>>
>>52931107
Dog whistle* not dog whistling
>>
>>52931135
Okay some really minimal onkyo with earthy timbres then?
>>
>>52931107
bull of heaven's already been mentioned

What was the first completely silent recording?

>>52931165
BSC - The Good? I'm not sure tbh

>>52931246
Reasons. I would really appreciate it.
So far, I have The Best of Marcel Marceao from 1971, but it has two minutes of applauses and I'm not sure if the other 38 minutes are completely silent.

>>52931253
I'm just curious.
