What happened to rock bassists? Serious question here. You listen to 60s and 70s and there's octaves, walking lines, lines built on complex chord structures. Through the 80s and beyond, synths took over, and bassists by and large turned into robots that just thumped along to root notes. There have been exceptions throughout but...any thoughts on what happened to the bassist position, why it disappeared into the background?

Bassists remembered that they were just playing bass.
>>
>>51846639
no fucking way man THAT is a bad example of how it progressed
>>
>>51846639
That's pretty fucking tight.
>>
>>
>>51846649

So much fucking this.

I've had to remind myself throughout the years that less=more when it comes to the bass
>>
>>51846699
how much did you listen to? he's certainly not avoiding root note thumps
>>
>>51846743

What's wrong with root note thumps?
>>
>>51846743
I dunno man, Death From Above is kinda pseudofunky. Real good bass example is Day of Baphomet by Mars Volta.
>>
>>51846778
time time time
musics progression is too complicated for those types of judgments
>>
>>51846758
its the opposite of what the thread is requesting
>>
>>51846763
do you like the new antemasque? its got flea on bass

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rE8Qe40PLPM
>>
>>51846842
Yeah I really dig Antemasque but more for the hooks than anything. The whole thing is like a giant hook, which is cool because it's also proggy. It's interesting also how the production creates a sort of vacuum, like the first couple times I listened to it on headphones it created a sortof satisfying dissonance.
>>
>>51846623
>octaves
that's some sophisticated shit right there bro

anyway long story short you probably don't listen to very much modern rock music, there's bass in your face for days

pop punk and core happened.

Check out your local music scene, half the time you won't even see a bassist.
>>
not rock (indie pop/rock), but listen to this bass line

Listen to more stoner rock OP, they're still around.

>>51846623
Most of the time everyone wants to be a guitarist and the shittiest guitarist gets shoved into playing bass.
>>
Modern production allows the guitar tone to be heavy/loud enough to the point that it drowns out the bass. In modern power chord based mainstream rock, the bass would have to be annoyingly loud to have anything it's doing heard above the guitars.
>>

>Check out your local music scene, half the time you won't even see a bassist.
I hate that this is true. Good bassists are so fucking hard to come by. And when a band actually does have a bass, it's practically always a guitar player that had to play bass for the band's sake
>>
good bassists had better music to play
>>

If you mean mainstream rock, it got dumbed down as a whole towards the end of the 70s.
But post-punk is full of prominent melodic bass playing.

Disco was the last bastion of bass

Deep Turtle has great basslines. They quit around 10 years ago though.

I'd have to guess it was the bassist from AC/DC and Kim Deal that made super minimal bass playing popular.

I always like the bassline in A-Punk

>>

Fat Mike is pretty mediocre, only good punk-rock bassist is Freeman from Rancid
>>
>>51854143
If Minutemen count as punk rock, Mike Watt rules all.
>>
>>51847062
lightning bolt uses two banjo strings or something on his bass, doesn't count
>>
>>51854643
i use a bass string on my guitar and it's still a guitar you fucking nigger
>>
>>51854711
post pics
the instrument he's playing is still a bass guitar yes, but it's not fair to compare other bassists' sound to his when he's doing something so unique. it's like saying cars today have no horsepower then citing a prius as my example despite the fact that that's a hybrid and not really representative of cars in general today

The bassline to Airbag is the dopest shit.
>>
>>51849042
Bass isn't heard so much as felt in that case. Take out the bass track completely and you would almost always immediately be able to tell that something is missing/wrong.
>>
>>51858237
Agree, but also, have the bass perform complex bass lines, and they'll just sound out of place in the power chord/heavy riff based music. The bass is better used in music where the guitar doesn't completely overpower the songs.
