You can't.
>it's kind of experimental electronic
oh like Skrillex, anon?
>it's sort of like 80s sci-fi film music
oh like Drive, anon?
>it's progressive electronic
what's that mean?
>[with Replica] it's sample-based and called "plunderphonics"
oh like Eminem, anon?
>it's music
oh like Nicki Minaj, anon?

Still waiting for pics of your friend boyo
>>
>>51447141
This is why I've never tried to get any friends into him. They think they're top shit because they listen to the Drive and Hotline Miami soundtrack and think synthwave is innovative and experimental. They'd ruin OPN for me
>>
>>51446890
>How do I describe Oneohtrix point never to a pleb?

he's a guy who rehashes berlin school/synthesizer music/new age

was that so hard...?
>>
>>51447163
Hey, I didn't say there's anything wrong with listening to "Nightcall", just don't that that OSTs are "le only good music being produced these days"

>>51447175

I guess the reason I started the thread is because I showed a friend an OPN track the other day and this guy has a pretty open mind about things, but he just gave me the stupidest look and was visibly holding back laughter. It really irked me just because I don't feel like there's any one I can share this music with, and part of me is bothered by listening to it just because I feel pretentious.
>>
>>51447141
I feel much "cooler" listening to Real Human Being and Under Your Spell. Still a shite film though
>>
>>51447247
>showing other people music

anon..
>>
>>51447247
I never show my pleb friends the music I listen to. I once showed Can to this guy I met who gave the typical "I listen to everything" statement and like 30 seconds into the song he's yells OKAY IT SUCKS TURN IT OFF!!!

If that wasn't bad enough, he insisted that if it was any good, it'd be popular.
>>
>>51447036
underrated post
>>
>>51447247
>visibly holding back laughter
>HURRHURRHUEERHUR ID SOUNDZ LIEK A 80Z COMBERSHAL
are you friends with retarded people or something? that's literally all i could imagine people thinking while listening and holding back laughter
>>
>>51447247
What track did you show him?
>>
>>51447288
Oof I'm sorry anon

>>51447306
It was Nassau, so it wasn't anything like that but still
>>
>>51447197
what's funny? do you disagree that it's an accurate way of summing him up?
>>
>>51446890
>"I don't know it's cool check it out"
you don't have to describe anything.
you never have to describe anything.
>>
>>51447342
>It was Nassau
Well there's part of your problem. It's one of the best tracks on the album but way too weird for plebs. You gotta ease them into it. Start with something simple like Replica, Returnal, or Betrayed In The Octagon, then slowly move them onto his weirder tracks.
>>
>>51447375

I suppose that's true, but it doesn't make me annoyance any less justified. Especially coming from people who "so artistic" and "musically inclined"
>>
>>51447342
Was about to say this >>51447375

Betrayed in the Octagon would be a much better place to start definitely
>>
>>51447348
no I'm laughing at you for posting that seriously
>>
>showing anything remotely "ambient" to a pleb

NEVER do this
>>
>>51447475
>"where's the beat?"
>>

why not?

You instantly drop in quality as a person in their eyes. Anything you can't get #turnt or #rockkkkk to is "elevator music" apparently.
>>
>>51446967
>>51446890
He looks like that kinda cute red head slightly chubby kid everyone knows.

>>
Just don't even bother. You may as well just tell them "you will never get it".
I always have this fantasy that I'm tripping with pleb friends and I put some OPN on and they have some kind of epiphany while hearing the best thing to ever touch their eardrums.
>>
You guys are lucky with Oneohtrix Point Never. I was listening to Lionel Marchetti and one of my friends asked what I was listening to.
>>
>>51447730
lmao, how inaccessible do you think it is?
>>
>>51447757
Go look at the billboard top 10 then come back and ask yourself that question again when it comes to the majority of people.
>>
>>51447757
it's pretty fucking strange to hear something like Replica or R+7 for the first time when all you listen to is pop and rock. Go look at youtube (or even rym) comments for R+7/Replica and you'll see.

Returnal starts with 2 or so minutes of straight noise which is pretty much an instant "wow anon this isn't music turn it off" so that one's off the table too.
>>
>>51447757
In the real world. Not /mu/ world. Very.
I showed my friend who is into music just the Replica track and he said "this is crazy insane music."
>>
>>51447121
Just call it New Age you dipshit
>>
>>51447784
my point is that it's not really the far out experimental thing, most of his stuff under that name anyways. most people who like downtempo/chillstep could get into replica/R+7 easily
>>
wtf is elevator music, never in my life have I been in an elevator that played music, and let me tell I've been in a lot of elevators. Are elevators that play music really common in America/Europe or what?
>>
My mum likes him so I didn't need to do any explaining
>>
>>51447824
Do you test elevators for a living?
>>
>>51447757
It's really inaccessible for your average person. Even totally regular ambient like Brian Eno is strange for most people, let alone anything with samples or experimentation.
>>51447791
>call it New Age
oh like Enya, anon? I didn't know you were a middle aged woman~!
>>
>>51447247
welcome to /mu/
>>
>>51447824
yeah man, usually some homeless busker playing blues harp or guitar though
>>
>>51447784
lol it's just some piano
>>
>>51447824
Is just a term that plebs use for background music. Usually people to be avoided. People that think the loudest most brash music is the best type of music. People that exclusively listen to anthems.
>>
>>51447824
what's the most obscure elevator you've scrobbled
>>
>>51447860
OPN is like the Tim Heideker of music
>>
>>51447860
didn't mean to reply but whatever
>>
>>51447839
bullshit, most people have heard ambient music in soundtracks. they are just not used to listening to it in another context. play OPN and then play Henry Cow and see what you'd get a larger reaction out of
>>
>>51447767
>>51447839
Most people above the age of 22 who have been to collage have experienced ''strange'' music, even those who listen to mainstream pop. Unless you show ONP to your grandparents you shouldn't have any problem. Also genres like chillstep-brostep etc are really popular nowadays, it's not like the majority of people listen to acoustic folk
>>
>>51447897
Film is notorious for getting away with experimentation because people don't consider it. They see it as a part of the whole, not music in itself. I showed a girl The Plateaux Of Mirror and like 30 seconds in she asked "so when does the music begin?" and turned it off before it was even halfway over. Maybe I'm surrounded by particularly bad plebs, but ambient music is an enigma to every 'normal' person I've tried to get into it.
>>
>>51447910
>chillstep-brostep
I have friends who are massively into these genres and would listen to 10 seconds of OPN before turning it off.
I tried showing them Jon Hopkins and they got bored in like 30 seconds
>>
>>51446890
overrated, boring. you should love him, pleb.

That's how you describe him.
>>
>>51447881
well yeah, they did that album together in 2012
>>
>>51447942
also. The majority of people listen to music to be stimulated. And in the post brostep days this is massively exaggerated. Most people listen to music to get amped up. Not to listen to experimental ambient music and have an existential crisis.
>>
>>51447980
>"I'm too dumb to understand genius. So I'll call the music boring and the people that like it plebs! That'll show em!"
>>
>>51448028
can't tell if this is bait or you're just painfully deluded. get out of here, dan.
>>
>>51446890
>In the past:
Brilliant electronic music artist that has many layers to his music and still manages to be comprehensible.

>Now:
One of those lazy fuckers that loops the same sound over and over and people claim their is something profound within when it's really him just not giving a shit anymore. He has pretty much been shit since Replica.
>>
how do you even find people that don't know opn honestly idg you guys
