Any Japanese artists that are really worth listening to? I don't know much about what kind of music comes out of Japan, since few people talk about it locally and none of my local record stores actually stock any Japanese imports. I was thinking of checking out Midori for a start.

toe - for long tomorrow (math rock, post rock, fairly easy on the ears)

Shugo Tokumaru - In Focus? (really catching indie-pop, think sufjan stevens but with unintelligeble lyrics)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZmJxkna6Ic

The Pillows - Little Busters (pixies-esque alt-rock, great melodies)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LnQmzWbT2NQ

Melt Banana - cell scape(catchy noise rock/hardcore punk.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtTs2liTmI0

This thread is FILLED with amazing music, you can't really go wrong with anything recommended here OP.

Make a list and check most if not everything out, and be careful of Boris or Kashiwa Daisuke, japanese artist rarely stick to one genre at all and those 2 are a prime example of that, so be sure to check more than just one album of them.

In the evening two people went along,

Calling to the wind, calling to you.

In every nook and cranny of Tokyo,

The half of us within a dream.

The ones that fall from the rear view mirror,

Happily and sadly,

Like being under the effects of some cold medicine,

It's that kind of feeling.

I'm running, I'm running, I'm running, I'm running.

What is this song I'm humming to myself?

What is this thing I remember?

It's busy so we can't meet, right?

It's becoming hotter as time goes on.

I wanna play in that kind of season, there around where you are.

Calling to the wind, calling to the wind, calling out to where you are.

I run far past the middle of the season. It's fall already, isn't it?

weird that these guys barely get any love. cool as shit heavy metal band from Japan that tries new stuff every release or so.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtyflMxqAUw

fun/cool/alright post-rock. can't seem to find their studio albums, but found a live album by them that was unexpectedly good. reminds me of oono yuuki, at times.

that crazy, guitar-driven math rock for everyone. kinda.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BycERlZZR0s

really, really cool modern jazz, imo. makes me happy...dunno 'bout you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWCE_hUj7h4

some lo-fi punk as fuck stuff from the 80s. bit new wave-y, if only for the keys. though, the release featured in the video is the only thing of interest, unless you're really into synth-pop (which is their later stuff).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1GJNTP36u4

think, like, pop-punk, but thrash, but thrash-pop.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=basNp5aZe4E

don't know what this is, since I was trying to find a noise-pop band's song, but this came up instead. reminds me of a more funky, poppy Fumiko Akiyoshi, without Yonin Bayashi. Sounds cool.

"uhvaunt-guard", some neat shit (some of the album actually sounds cool as fuck, but I'm too drunk to look for it, or care)

I love this jazz punk style, for me 385's album from last year Ningen is better than anything by Midori, but on RYM literally every review pans it for just being a midori clone, and my problem with this is, seriously why would you dislike an album for being the same genre as another album, like for some reason people dont want more Jazz Punk in this style

wtf

seriously wtf. I can't get enough I want another 15 bands to pop up over the next couple years playing this style of music and yet people are getting mad there is more than one, oh well legit opinion tho, Ningen is the pinnacle, the bitch from 385 gets down on the bass
>>
>>50990140
Huh, Ningen is low rated because it's not that good, not because it sounds a bit like Midori

best japanese album of all time
>>
the cabs's first 2 eps are good. emo/math with a really great noodly guitar player. lots of pulloffs into capos.
nuito is amazing math rock band. most creative tapping guitarist I've ever heard.
sajjanu is amazing. a thousand riffs go by per each song. a trio with 2 guitars and a drummer.
lagitagida is pretty good jam/bits of powermetal/psychadelic group.
I think kazumasa hashimoto and shuta hasunuma are from japan too. their music is so pleasant and immense.
Far france too! they're a noise/jam/punk band with a ton of energy

There was this one metal band that has apparently been around for a while. Their recent album was a picture of the three of them in the traditional Japanese drawing style. I think they were sludge metal, I don't remember what they were called.
