>>
>>50839615
You know Sotos specifically writes in the first person even when not talking about himself to put the reader in the mind of the person speaking, right?

>"I have to pin the words down, cut them out and place them as far as possible from the dunce economy. I’m not an exegete. But I take the words and ideas and stutters and stick them somewhere far more successful. You’ll understand this, finally, when I demean myself enough to tell you what I do with the words that these mouthy pigs just repeat often enough to tell you that they stand behind them. It’s not what I take, or who I take them away from. But where I put them. Not rewrite them. Not change or charge the context. I identify them. I don’t, idiot, masturbate with them. I can’t imagine wanting to do anything without having these words fully included. I wouldn’t even consider doing anything without them. The cunts that make cartoons out of their ideas. Little collages and signatures and slack versions. Strippers and songwriters and female’d max factors. I live all over them. I write through them, use them, come away with little more than a dangling possible. What I do is inescapable."

>>
>>50839677
The surface material is supposed to revolt any normal human being. Sexual violence is supposed to be an intensely uncomfortable subject when presented as it is in Buyer's Market, completely straight and testimonial.

The "deeper meaning" behind the recordings, according to Sotos, is a vague sense of exploitation of the tragedy and perversion of the victims. He does this better in other material he has written, but it's evident here that despite our collective revulsion of the subject matter, it still draws people to it, in a sort of thing beyond bile fascination.

The McMartin track is the key point for this. Listening to it along with the others it blends into the awful miasma of the other tracks. But the McMartin scandal was a hoax. No one was molested there. It was the peak of Satanic ritual sexual abuse hysteria, where people intentionally searched out the worst, and fabricated it when they couldn't find it.

The fact people listen to it only furthers Sotos' point.
>>
>>50839696
>We arent hearing the victims point of view are we.

Several interviews are, in fact, the victims.

Some sections are rape victims, some sections are children who are victims of sexual abuse.

This thread isn't about scary music, it's about obscure and fucked up music. Disturbing music. Music that makes the average person recoil (even though they'll be likely watch To Catch a Predator or some documentary on a rape case).

Am I insane if I wasn't in the least bit shocked by any of the recordings? I found most of it boring I mean, they're just testimonials, I know sexual abuse exists and I've read about countless cases like the ones here. I didn't really find anything disturbing about the interviews themselves.

>>
>>50840069

>you say that buyers market is music because teh interviews are sequenced so that they produce a dramatic reaction.

>>50840132

>>
>>50840078
>News is organized to provide strongest emotional reaction for the purpose of increasing viewership as a commercial product

No, news is objective information about the current situation. And if the news you watch is intended to evoke emotional reaction with you, you should watch something else.

Ofcourse sometimes the news uses emotions, but it should not.

The news is a commercial product, but that doesn't necessarily mean that their purpose is to always increase viewership. If the purpose of the NYT was to have as much readers as possible, they would write about lindsay lohan and her new fuckbuddy or whatever.

lrn2journalism
>>
>>50840087
>>50840100

This is difficult, it really depends. I would definitely say not all journalism is art. For example, news aren't art, as stated here >>50840107, the same with any other type of "objective" journalism like, say, research papers, because it's not meant to convey anything other than concrete information about a subject without any subjective opinion it's just supposed to be facts. Art in journalism would be any type of subjective journalism where there's a more discursive or essayistic approach and you're manipulating/intervening with your own views/ideas, like in reviews, for example.
>>
>>50840168
>they would write about lindsay lohan and her new fuckbuddy or whatever.
no, they would lose their readership if they would do that.

>>50840202

Don't be an idiot, you know what he means. News are supposed to be objective by general rule, the quality and corruption in most news is unrelated to this discussion.
>>
>>50840218
>it was a bit of an overstatement, and i think you know what i mean
yes, i know, still they keep one political direction to keep their customers. it is a commercial product. there is no objective news. you can get an objective view of something if you read several newspapers and put it together, but one single paper will never be objective, that's not possible.

of course the news is subjective, it depends on so many factors. compare articles to the same topic in different papers and then even in different countries. did you never do that?
>>
>>50839823
Audacity didn't crash therefore you're a faggot.

okay, im with you that fox news is bullshit but you're not serious about it not being journalism right? thats like saying 'x' isn't music and its just made to make people buy their shirts; that may be the case but it's still music.

MUSIC = SOUNDS THAT ARE PRESENTED BY AN ARTIST AS MUSIC

It's not that hard to understand
>>
>>50840379
could we please stop comparing journalism to music

From what I've seen, and I can only watch fox news via youtube, so maybe I've only seen extremes, I do not consider Fox News as journalism.

Journalism should be objective or should at least try to be objective. When it does not do that, it fails to be able to be categorized as journalism for me.
>>
>>50840415
>artist's intention is important at all
>>
>>50840417
>could we please stop comparing journalism to music
how could we if something like buyer's market exists?
>>
>>50840423
For me it is. It might not be to you
>>
>>50840048
It can be, but it's duty to inform takes priority over it's aesthetic aspect. Same thing actually goes for popular music, which is entertainment before being art.
>>
>>50840417
its stll journalism, don't be childish. it's just bad journalism.
>>
>>50840087
bad art is still art
>>
>>50840436
I agree, but even though it might rely more on entertainment than its artistic values it's still art.
>>
>>50840460
how do you define objectively "bad" art?
>>
>>50840435
so, when you listen to bach, can you enjoy it without believing in god? because that's why most of his music was made, to worship god.
>>
>>50840465
It is for entertainment, but for journalism it's more vague since art is not a preoccupation at all.

But this is good. This ambiguity is what makes subjects like art and philosophy so interesting.
>>
>>50840480
You can only evaluate value by giving a context, but that's beside the point. What I was trying to say is that something one dislikes or considers low brow doesn't lose it's status as an art piece for such.
>>
>>50840444
define journalism
>>
>>50840498

the quality of the piece in question is not the issue

>>
>>50840435
why should the artists' intention matter? only their content should matter
>>
>>50840532

the whole what is art/music question is utterly retarded, as nobody can define the question well enough to draw a line between what is and is not art

it is just people drawing arbitrary lines

>>
>>50840540
>>50840547
When I said intention I meant as in the artist should want it to be art not the essential purpose of the art.
>>
>>50840548
i agree about art. but you can draw a line between what is music and what is not.

can a car be art? of course, it depends. is it music? no, it is a car. that maybe could used to make music (i would call it the burn out symphony)

this was about buyer's market mainly. i think people just associate albini=music, that's it.
>>
>>50840580

so music is auditory then?

but talking is not music, what about spoken word stuff?

here is where the definition is too vague

I agree that paintings or architecture is not music, but once you cut it down to all the things you can hear, that is where we struggle
>>
>>50840552
Nah, it's from this year. It's not it though, but it has samples of the song you posted before.
>>
>>50840603
If my intention when talking is to create music then yes it is music. Whether it is good music is entirely subjective.
>>
>>50840603
>spoken word
is spoken word. you can do it in a musical way (there is this german poem that's a fugue) but spoken word is spoken word.

or you can combine spoken word and music (like schonberg) that you have both, but that does not make the spoken word music.

rap music is different, it is more rhythmical and melodical (yes) than pure spoken word.
>>
>>50840642

I disagree, in that that intent should not be the be all and end all of music

I think it needs to have rhythm and/or tone variation in a way that creates feeling, like >>50840648 says
>>
>>50840642

The same as the art. Some artists even self identify as anti-music or strictly noise artists. They themselves draw the line, it is onself that applies the musical value, but it does not define the artists intention outright.

But you do hear the victims' point of views, multiple times. Relisten to it again and pay attention, dude. Plus, keep in mind that those accounts of molestation have happened and listen to the damage those vile acts have done to their families. It's depressing more than scary, but honestly if it was my kids I'd be fucking terrified.

The story about the woman's son who went missing for a few hours and she just assumed he was at a friend's house late until she gets a call that he's in the hospital after being raped really got to me, partially because I know my mother was shit scared of that happening to me and my brothers, but also because if I was a father, I'd be a mixture of angered and depressed. >this is not up for debate
do you even into aesthetics?

Sonorous art is NOT necessarily music. Don't let a postmodern cultural attitude towards art necessitate your response to it. It is not necessarily CLEAR what is music; and by the way, debate is a necessary feature of the appreciation of art.

Music, for that matter, is not manipulated sound. The manipulation of sound is necessary to create music, but music is actually the abstraction that occurs in our heads when we listen to something. It is the 'movement' of sound. A single tone held for 5 minutes is not music. A series of tones, which we can perceive to "move", either "up" or "down" (or however your mind abstracts it) is music. Music, by definition, carries no content. If the recording we are listening to can be identified categorically as "a man fucking a horse", then it is not music, although a musical recording can USE that sound in the service of the abstract movement that we call music.

I can elaborate further; would love to hear responses.

Music is not sound. Music is a context by which we can interpret the sounds we hear artistically. Music happens when we stop thinking about sounds in a utilitarian way and start thinking about them in artistic sense. No sound is music until it reaches a person's ears and even then it does not become music until the listener lets it become music. This is why we can listen to an interview with child rape victims and not consider it music, but when you put cover art, a track listing, and Steve Albini's name on it you can make it music. Not because you changed anything about the sound but because you changed the context of the sound into one where people are more intent to hear it as music.

tl;dr
music is organized sound, but the organizer is not the composer it is the listener.
