H-hi /mu/

/u/ here. I'm studying Japanese to better translate my yuri fanfics and get a job...

But my teacher tells me I should listen to Japanese music when I study.

But I don't really know where to start. Perfume sounds good and so does Capsule but I was wondering what /mu/'s recommendation is?

I went to /jp/ but they told me music was for faggots and to come here. I'm sorry.

/jp/ has the denpa thread though, which is where you should have gone for all your weeb music delights.

Also, listen to this badboy for your japanese lesbian-tinted poppy music.

T-thanks boku no tripfag. But I don't really enjoy anime music.

I do like electronic. S-since /mu/ told me to listen to Mogwai and Gutter Twins I've been trying to find something Japanese that's a little less bombastic.
YuruYuri is the greatest.
Japan loves to dish out shoegaze and dream pop, so listen to a lot of that and make a manga about a bunch of disheveled looking 90s chicks forming a dream pop band and playing in a bunch of small clubs and coffee shops.

If that's not your style, listen to shibuya-kei like Pizzicato Five. They made that song "Baby Love Child" that was in Futurama
>>
>>50608148
書上奈朋子 sounds right up your alley. Her albums Baroque and Psalm are ideal music to study to. I sure did when I was still studying japanese at uni :3
>>
>>50608022
Although you prefer electronic music, I think you'll be okay listening to the Pillows (especially Happy Bivouac, Runners High, and Little Busters).

Midori
Boris
Kinoko Teikoku
Tricot

Some bands i like. Probably not the best for learning nip though, especially midori and boris
>>
Janne Da Arc and Larc-en-Ciel if you want more melodic rock based stuff. Male vocals though.

I also like to translate AKB things anon. I like aidoru. They are also quite /u/ and /mu/ but I can't stand the music.

Thanks /mu/ you guys are way nicer than /jp/.
Uhm... my favorite bands are old NiN/Puscifer/How to destroy angels/nirvana etc. The 90's were my favorite musical time. I doubt there are any 日本 equivalents though.
The musical or the manga? The manga is really quite cute. But the real lives of idols are often just as interesting. Their interactions with each other is often packed with /u/ both on stage and off which I enjoy a lot.
The musical was great too. One of my favorite idols was in it.

/jp/ here. sorry, but music isn't necessarily otaku culture. not that we had to be rude about it.

Solid recommendations, love the Pillows. I'd also add Please Mr. Lostman to the album list.
>>50608179
Pizzicato Five were my entry into Japanese music in like 1994 but they sound dated to my ear. Too French.

I'd say check out some Takako Minekawa - her stuff has aged really well. Fun 9 and Roomic Cube are good albums to start on. Smart woman, married to Cornelius.

Will also point out this record by Strawberry Machine

i can help you photoshop pages and we can be a group together

otherwise it depends on what music that you like. if you like vocal jazz, listen to japanese vocal jazz, if you like avantcore - Midori is a good place to start, yeah.
The Boredoms, Boris, Envy, everything by Otomo Yoshihide, Melt-banana, Mono, Cornelius and shibuya-kei in general are all sme really great artists that I think can appear to a large audience.

Let me tell you about the wonderful world of visual kei
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTSzJKlV_Ek

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7CabHuhCYw

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvjbPvR8Vnw

These are some good starting points that are more "Pop" and easily accessible. From there, you can go to Kagerou, The Piass, Malice Mizer/Moi dix Mois and wherever else it might take you. Just note that from around 2005 onwards, the whole scene turned to shit as the big names experienced commercial success and every new band popping up is a copy of a copy of Dir en grey.

You need to get down with Enka

Misaki Iwasa is a great starting point. She is a refreshing breath of young life into an ever aging genre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoXVLx1DtpU

And Meiko Kaji - she has an extensive body of work, but what first turned me on to her was her songs on the Kill Bill soundtracks.

Not to usurp this thread... but for the first 30 seconds of this trailer there is some kind of Japanese traditional music which sounds really good. Is there a special name for it?

So are you just looking to take in some culture?

Or are their any genres you're interested in?
