>there hasn't ever been drums better than the 808
Prove me wrong, phaggots
>>50388415
Mother.
Fucking.
LinnDrum.
>>50388476
linndrums cool but it's no 808
808 is the GOAT drum machine, no question
>>50388415
Amen break > all

909 is of equal quality

>>50388505

>drum machine
>>50388573
909 is cool, but the 808 is so versatile
909 sounds out of place if you're not making a techno or a house record
>>50388476
LM-1 > Linn Drum
also CR-78 > 808
>>50388549
best hihats
>>50388682
i like the toms
>>50388596
909 works in hip hop too sometimes, and also occasional synthpop

tok fucking kek
>>50388704
909 drums cut through the mix so much. sometimes its perfect and amazing, sometimes it doesn't work at all
>>50388821
rockist spotted
>>50388821
I know this is just edgy b8 shitposting, but no one with half a brain ever used them as though they were really a substitute for real drums. They're their own distinct instrument.
except for ya know, the real thing? so much more subtle tweaking and character
>>50388873
If you hear people using it outside the context of house/techno, though (especially before it got really popular), you may realize that it's a lot more flexible than its typical uses imply. I think it's largely considered genre-specific because it wasn't used all that much became identified with house and techno.
Not really a drum machine but, an MPC.
>>50388994
superior (at least sound-wise)
>>50389073
it looks like a fucking cash register
how are you supposed to make music on that
>>50389122
no, this looks like a cash register
>>50389073
True, I would say the MPC definitely had way more impact though.
>>50389122
get talent
TR-77 is my personal favorite
I really like Electribes. You can do more with one than any x0x.
>>50389415
oh, and the Korg Minipops 7
>>50389547
>You can do more with one than any x0x.
so can almost everything else made within the last 25 years...
>>50389547
i got an ER-1. it fucking rules
I guess nothing sounds quite like an 808
>>50389583
Aphex Twin/Jean Michel Jarre please leave
>>50388415
I would say a Tempest or a Elektron Drum machine would beat out an 808 any day. The 808 is an icon though.
>>50389710
It was actually best on Diamonds, Fur Coat, Champagne.
>>50388415
the hihats are based.
...is it weird that I have a somehow encyclopedic knowledge of which drum drum machines were used on which songs, including really unusual drum machines and early uses of stuff that only got popular later?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUG_gB44SYo
Are there any good drum machines for under 200$?

Not really sure what you're going for here. Yeah I know Big Black used a TR-606 and Drumulator...
>>50390394
I like the Yamaha RY-30, but probably you should just use software unless you have something really specific in mind...
>>50390554
>but no one with half a brain ever used them as though they were really a substitute for real drums
Big Black did
>1000 years before 3014
>buying drum machines
Why
>>50390781
I don't really agree. The Drumulator was deliberately programmed to be super aggressive in a way that a real drummer wouldn't play. I think I remember reading an Albini interview where he said he liked that he could emphasize all the bass drum hits rather than just the downbeats. They wanted something that sounded like a jackhammer, not ersatz "realistic drumming". So they were aware of and deliberately exploited the unique qualities of a drum machine.
>>50390865
muh analog, knobs, etc.
>>50388505

>>50390989
Yeah, Really I agree, basically what seperates Big Black from Albini's other bands
>>50388956
I fucking love the 909, the ride is to die for.and yeah it's all subjective. it's how you use it
>>50389224
My dad has this exact machine. It uses floppy disks
>>50390394
The roland tr-626. i seen them on ebay for as low as 50$
I've never tried it but i might pick one up for the fun of it and own that shit
>>50391243
forgot pic. It looks easy to use
>>50389748
this
What drum VST does /mu/ use? I use the audiorealism ADM, but I'm curious what else is out there. I've got that, and the included ableton packs.
>>50389748
yeah the tempest is a top-notch piece of gear

Where the fuck can I get some good instruments. I've been working with fmmf and twisted energy for fucking ever and I just want some good synths or something.

>>50391273
>>50391243
they sound way too low bit digitaly for me, same as the kick on the 707, but everything sounds like that
>not synthesizing your own drums
>MMXIV
>>50391611
naw, i do that too. found sound as well. all are good options
>>50391611
but layering sounds is just so much easier to get the desired effect
i like to layer a lot of x0x drum sounds together, the attack of an 808 kick and the tail of a 606 usually work nicely
>>50391458
Don't know how to really torrent and broke. Thanks though
>>50391733
you can still layer when you make your own sounds, but yes, your way is fine too
I got like 6000 drums from a link on warbeats. Comes with 808 909 lm1 all of that shit. Its nice but I don't have any GODDAM INSTRUMENTS!!
>>50388415
Casio Rapman 2
I swear to god there is no drum machine as goat as the rapman
>>50388415
kek
This ain't a drum machine for pussies.
>>50391611
Synthesized drums were actually a lot more distinctive and interesting than the 808 even in the analog days. And I don't really mean the Simmons SDS-5; modular synth drums and stuff like the ult-sound DS-4 (pictured) had a lot more character... They're not generally as good for metallic hihats, handclaps, etc. though.
>>50393237
I've made some pretty wicked drums using a piezo sensor under a rubber pad, and a modular synth.
