Ignis Fatuu is probably the best of the Mittelalter bands, a large wave in Germany that doesn't really seem to get all that popular outside of it. It's common for bands in the genre to have a slow pace, a melodious, sing along attitude and predictable song structures. Unendlich Viele Wege is a bit less predictable, with more variations in speed and interesting flute lines with a good vocalist.

Weeping the Black has only publically released one demo so far. Tormentor Ego Martyr sounds very unique, with a lot of percussion being used like a Djembe and a percussion digeridoo, interwoven well within the demo, which still has a high production value. The demo is pretty slow paced, but has a high variety in its intensity with the rhythmic percussion providing the baseline to the tracks.

The earliest real release from Crom, the EP suffers from relatively poor production quality, but with The Fallen Beauty this is actually a plus, with their follow-ups going a bit too far into the epic category. The Fallen Beauty succeeds in its simplicity and reminds a lot of Bathory, which makes it unsurprising there's a Bathory cover on it.

Hostëria is a Folk Metal EP with an attitude. There's a few Power Metal elements in there, mainly in the drums and the vocals, but it is still distinctly Folk through the flute which is omnipresent in all tracks. The songwriting is surprisingly good, with rhythmic sections connecting in a very coherent manner.

What happens when you add electronic elements to a folk metal band? Well, this. The band has very clear links to both Industrial Metal as well as Folk Metal, and it's hard to put one above the other. The vocals of female lead Orsolya tend to lead into the Folkier sections, whereas shaman Scrofa leads in the more industrial sections. The song structures feel a bit off at times, but it's to be expected with the myriad of instrumentation.

If there was ever a band to shamelessly copy Bathory, it would have to be Falkenbach. In themes, in the guitar tuning, in song structures, just about everything. Fortunately, Bathory is so good that it still makes them a good band. The use of harmonic vocals is well done, and the riffs are good. Worth checking out if you really like Bathory.

Voluspaa focuses a lot on vocal harmonies much in the vein of Bathory.

A thrashy band that utilizes throat singing and Chinese string instrumentation. A short summary of Tengger Cavalry's ancient call. The vocals are distinctly Black Metal, but the pacing is more resembling of a band like Kvelertak than Folk or Black metal. The chinese instrumentation is applied in an Equilibriumesque way for the most part, simply going along with the song rather than waiting for individual moments.

Moonsorrow is a band that has changed a lot in their sound. From the Black Metal beginnings to the happier folky sounds of Kivenkantajaa, Varjoina kuljemme kuolleiden maassa sits in the middle of all of it. The album tells a story about a group of Finnish explorers that gets stranded on an island and slowly accept death. There's a good balance between the harsh and melodious sounds, though the vocals are mostly harsh.

Nydvind and Bran Barr were interconnected with a few members, band leader Yoltar being one of them. Nydvind takes a far slower and more bleak approach to the genre, removing all Folk instrumentation and the emphasis on the drums and putting it on the guitar. Eternal Winter Domain has a very buzzy, wintery guitar sound somewhat remniscent of Entombed, with simple but effective song structures reminding one of Bathory.

Bran Barr's two focal points are the excellent drum fills and sound created by band leader and drummer Aed Morban, and the violin play of Ahès which plays a strong leading role throughout the record. The album is very heavy alternated with more folky passages, with vocalist Yoltar performing both clean and black vocals.

Fejd utilizes a large amount of native Swedish instruments, a Swedish Harp being the most prominent throughout the album. Nagelfar, like all of Fejd's efforts, border in between Metal and Rock. The band utilizes a lot of sing-along choruses, which even if you don't speak Swedish, you can make out enough to sing along. It's a very swedish experience.

Similar to Fejd only in genre, Veremiy takes a far more conventional approach to the genre, with a conventional setup backed up by a violin and a flute which play a supportive role on the album. The vocals of band leader Vitali are clean, but low, and they have a similar feel in their sound to fellow Ukranian band Flëur.

An Norvys is a band that stands out through its extensive use of the violin, which is usually the foundation to their tracks, particularly on One and All. The unique vocals of Liliane Bos are something listeners will either love or hate, and it's alternated with harsh vocals on the sophomore Sins and Stones, which contains their most well written tracks, whereas One and All focuses mostly on melody.

Heidevolk is the most well known Folk Metal band from the Netherlands. Their biggest claim to fame is the bombastic dual vocals that they employ which they place a lot of emphasis on. Heidevolk doesn't use a lot of folk instrumentation, only featuring violin on a select few tracks. They're good at interweaving different melodies into their songs in a coherent manner.

Smallman is a Bulgarian band that takes a lot of influence from Tool in its bass heavy sound. The song structures are highly dynamic in its use of highs and lows, but what's most uncommon about the band is its use of bagpipes. In most Folk Metal bands they're used as a cheerful instrument. Smallman utilizes them in a very different, darker way. The vocals evoke a lot of emotion which gives the album a very personal touch. Highly recommended.
