i guess my outlook on it is that i want people to hear my music even if it's personal. i've made a piece of art that i want others to consume and appreciate because i worked hard on it and loved the project until i let it out into the world.
it's not a matter of being pretentious, it's about being honest about your record that you've put out, be honest about how personal it was, be mature about the fact that you've put an emotional art piece out into the world for others to take part in.
i guess you just have to consider that your music is worth listening to, and let me be the first to assure you that it is, it's texturally interesting and emotionally striking. your harmonies are great, the production is always interesting, it's good stuff.
just be confident and self-aware. don't think your hard work is worth being poked fun at

genre tags are easier to use because the words composition, transitions, and originality are not specific to one genre of music. they can be just as easily used to describe chamber folk or acid jazz. people come into these threads looking for good music according to their taste, not some random anon e-peen stroking. cry moar

>>48818766
I'll give you my brutally honest opinion. Hold tight.
>>48818766
I'm not the biggest fan. It's a little subdued, even for shoegaze. I'm also not fond of the "atmospheric" thing. It just sounds like you put your instruments on the other side of the room, and I feel as though I'm straining myself to listen to something that, ultimately, doesn't captivate me.
The good news, though, is that you nailed the sound you described. So I guess it's just not my thing.

>>48818913
I'm not >>48818796
>>48818766
Ok, here are my main gripes:
-Too much reverb
-Not enough melody, it's all atmosphere and there are no lead parts to grab on to
-Not alot of development in song structure. The first tune in particular was essentially the same thing looped for a couple minutes and then lead up to an overdriven tremolo picked riff. There's no buildup really, so the supposed payoff at the end doesn't amount to anything.
-Drums are lacking dynamics and they sound like plugins
-The songs are all kind of samey. The tom beat is overused.
On the positive side, it sounds well recorded and well thought out.
As you said, it's atmospheric music. Maybe you made exactly what you wanted and if so, that's great. Personally I would try to inject some melody into the tunes in order to grab the listeners ear and give them something to sing along with.
>>48818766
Just finished listening too 'Scape' i quite like the textures of the guitars and the progression. The drums have a nice amount of reverb on them but i would like it a bit lower in the mix personally.I appreciate your'e honesty about mixing troubles, but suprisingly listening on my shitty headphones its pretty alright , i would like the guitars alot louder but thats my preference in this kinda genre :P. One thing i would say is the drum roll at the end could do with some more effects possibly too keep it interesting . That's my two cents, will continue listening mayne.
>>48817443
just listened to this
at no point was i bored but the lyrics didn't help with that. run of the mill girl problem lyrics, that's really the weakest part of this. i loved the interesting sounds on feeling golden, definitely the highlight of this. the singer could be better but i'm assuming he will improve in the future. overall this project definitely has potential and i would be interested in hearing the next release.

>>48818913
>>48819078
Thanks. I was kind of worried about it being too repetitive, but I just couldn't think of any melodies that sounded natural with it.
>they sound like plugins

Thanks; I liked the sound of the reverbed drums so much that I probably put them a little too high. When I tried to tone it down the guitars would wash them out (which was probably due to too much distortion).
In the future I'm going to try not to hide behind hazy soundscapes as much.
>>48819983
Theres no need too change the sound if you like it , just develop on it this is just a small step of many and for your first demo ep jesus it's better than some could hope for. Focus in on the aspects of your sound that you think could do with some work but by no means disregard what you are doing in favor of what some peeps on here say. Good luck in the future man :D
>>48820226
Thanks mayne.
I really like bands that use atmospheres, like Slowdive, HANL, Tim Hecker, but when I re-listen to some of the stuff I record I realize I'm using a comical amount of effects.
My goals for whenever I do an LP are
>Songs with better melody
>Better mastering/mixing
>Effects on the parts that benefit from it instead of tacking them to every track
>Less predictability
>>48820843
>Someone not only taking criticism well, but taking it to heart

>>48821620
i think you're sound is definitely evolving maybe focus a bit more on mixing, i'm looking forward to hearing more from this project
;)
>>48817897
I feel like it'd be cool and somewhat uniwue if you brought the drums foreward in the mix, theres not much atmospheric music that focuses on the drums. and yes, I get that that is because drums arn't particularly atmospheric but I think it'd be cool and go a long ways twards making your sound unique.
>>48821798
Thank you for the feedback! What aspects of the mixing are you talking about? I'm pretty new to all of this
>>48821869
oh, and make your logo spikier and try to bring out the points on it it'd look more pentagram-y that way. one can clearly never have enough pentagrams.
>>48821879
the loudness changes from sample to sample breaks up the flow. idk what program you use but in any program with multiple tracks for audio you should be able to adjust the output for each track, so you can choose whether or not you want certain parts of the song to stand out. by default youll have mostly all the output switches set to standard. its pretty easy if you just listen to the track and adjust it by ear as it plays. it really does help, if you need to i would look up a tutorial for whatever program you do use
>>48822175
It's actually sample-less. All just one track that I created and then warped, are you talking about the pan-switching by any chance? Thanks again for the help :)
>>48822325
I use logic pro x by the way.
>>48821869
What do you mean by "bring them forward"?
They're mixed louder than the other instruments (too loud, probably) and I added a ludicrous amount of reverb to them. I tried to make them sound like they were coming from far away but I can't think of what you mean by "forward"
>>48822325
no i think the panning is good, you limit yourself a bit more if all the instruments are on one track but you can still adjust the levels using different methods. i'm not very familiar with logic pro, but im sure there is a way to adjust the output for the low end sound, middle and high end (as the simplest fix). maybe use a limiter, an equalizer, and adjust "curves" (idk where it is in logic pro, but essentially it adjusts the volume at different pitch levels, it might be called threshold). believe me its a lot easier once you have it in front of you ha
>>48822531
ahhh, okay! I think I've fixed it! Will upload soon. Again, thank you so much for taking your time to help me out :) I'm trying to make this project my best yet, I've exhausted Terre Noire and Gay Cops.

We call ourselves Trigger Warning. It's basically just noise music all recorded live. It's a fun time, we released an "album" recently and are about to release an EP single type thing.
>Noise, improv, pretty lo-fi precumcore

let me know what you think about it know if you're still here. I'm really not sure what I did, but it sounds a bit weird now.

Fucking radical dude. Drum parts are just complex enough to be interesting and just simple enough to not be distracting. I think some added lead parts would help your sound overall, but I really like the atmosphere in this album.
>>48823156
yeah i think the highs might be a bit too high now and the low end has a bit of a rattle, but thats an easy fix, just repeat what you left but to a lesser amount. either that or normalize it. but i think overall the sound quality is a lot more full

This is our debut album. Really challenging experimental music. Would love some feedback, and I am starting to check out some stuff in this thread right now.
>>48821620
Holy shit this is fucking weird and I dig the hell out of it. Vocals make me think of what Robert Smith would sound like if he went into experimental electronica.

Yeah, I've encountered a similar dilemma in my own music, which is why my first album is entirely instrumental. But vocals would be a nice touch to your stuff.

spent quite a lot of time on this. hope you guys like it. the beats and vocals are all by me. obviously i havent been rapping for very long..

>>48823092
This is sick dude! It's trippy enough to create a psychedelic atmosphere, while the guitars in the background make it ominous.
I don't normally like lo-fi metal but yours has a very organic feel to it which makes it work.
Definitely downloading, keep up the good work.

Eh we prefer to just set up a cassette recorder and then just record whatever happens, very little post-recording editing.
I like your sound a lot. You should continue to make beats with weird, non-musical sounds, we need more rap with stuff like that. You should learn some Wavetable Synthesis as well and use it to make weird synth noises for melodies and shit. if you google "wavetable synthesis" one of the first results will be a like 50 page PDF on the subject. good luck!
>>48824144
i've heard of that, i'll check it out! thanks!!

Actually, I LOVE Year Of No Light, one of my favorite post-metal bands actually. They're one of the bands that really influenced the album, most notably on The Sleeping Seraph.

Another that most people don't know is When Icarus Falls

They're more in the hardcore vein, but if you like stuff like Rosetta and Light Bearer they're worth a shot. Vocals are great too.
>>48824256
When you said "more in the hardcore vein", I actually immediately though of Light Bearer, and then I saw you mentioned them and I chuckled. "Lapsus" was actually a big influence on me, too, both musically and conceptually because the concept of my album actually centers around a war between three angels.
I'll definitely check out When Icarus Falls though. Thanks dude :)

Love the songwriting, very original as far as the whole Midwest emo revival sound goes (this is coming from someone who hates most emo outside of like cap'n jazz and older stuff like rites of spring).
