>>48593136
not all of it, actually there are different sub genres but for the most part I feel this is kind of true especially with like bebop and hard bop... Like I put on the Birth of COol its supposed to be so good but it sounded so much like what I though Jazz was supposed to sound like it really hits me as a boring caricature

I know this a close minded way to view it but to this day I have found one type of Jazz that is pretty alright an that's third stream which I guess is a marriage of Jazz and Classical? Anyways Mingus' The Black Saint and the SInner Lady and Davis' Sketches of Spain are the only Jazz albums I can enjoy.

What I love about Jazz is just how fucking much of it there is. Jazz of the 20th century was made by people who knew how to play their instruments and by lord they played. Any given Jazz artist has dozens of albums under there belt. I hate to be blunt with this comment but I do think jazz is a safe genre. It's mostly instrumental and there's really no wrong way to do it. Nothing wrong with that though I love the genre and the fact I will never stop discovering new favorites
>>
>>48597850
Jazz is only a safe genre for musicians that are skilled enough to pull it off. For all the other musicians it is a genre that would expose them.
>>
>>48597850
Improv takes a real talent though.
>>
>>48597850
Why do you think it's safe? I don't want to start a fight... Sorry... But consider maybe... Soe like sun ra does pretty jarring and chaotic, offsetting compositions.

>>
>>48597903
what >>48597880
said. Jazz is a genre you need technical skill in. It's basically the exact opposite of punk rock.
>>
>>48597906
Where do you draw the line between improvisation and composition? U achieve things improvising you don't achieve composing and vice-versa. Just a thought, really.
>>
>>48597924
when did i become your personal bitch?
>>
>>48597969
There is very little difference. Improvisation is actually composing in real time. Composition is actually improvising and writing it down for posterity.
>>

>>48597970
All I'm saying is that improvisation is one of the most difficult things to do properly. I speak for myself when saying this: my old teacher gave me brief instruction in improvisation and it was a struggle to learn to make even simple lines that make musical sense.
You shouldn't diss it unless you can prove that it takes no talent.
>>
>>48598030
this guy is asspained about the fact that any teenager with a year of experience with an instrument can play as well as his favorite bands
>>
>>48597997
Do you know what rhetorical questions are? Not trying to be sarcastic, but for crying out loud.
>>
>>48597906
You think improv doesn't take talent?
That's what I love about jazz compositions though. It's a perfect balance of musical proficiency and feeling.

>>48598104
I wish people wouldn't waste threads with their b8.
>>
>>48597997
I'm going to assume you really don't know what you're talking about.
Jazz is played from a lead sheet. Let's take a classic for example, like So What by miles davis. The chords are written out, but there is no rhythm. All the instruments improvise the rhythm. Then, there is a head which is the lead part. In this song, that is the part the bass pays at the beginning and end if the song. In between that, the solos are the leads. But like the chords that the players improvise the rhythm part on, the soloist improvises the lead.
>>
>>48598167
That's what happens when you share the place with mostly 15 - 22 year olds.

>>
>>48598171
Holy shit a person who knows what they're talking about. Question: When you're learning a piece how do you go about learning the changes? I usually try and learn pieces by ear when learning rock tunes but have a hard time working out all the progressions by ear. Is that just something that comes with practice or should I be listening out for certain things?
>>
>>48598228
If you do it I will also. I challenge everyone here to post their own jazz performances so we can see who is actually credible and who is just regurgitating words they've read on wiki.
>>
>>48598356
That guy does NOT know what he's talking about.
>The chords are written out, but there is no rhythm. All the instruments improvise the rhythm.

wat.

You can get a fakebook which will have standards written out in leadsheet form but you will be much better off learning jazz standards by ear. Start with just the bass. Figure out the bass movement. Then figure out the chord qualities. Then the melody.
>>
>>48598212
>>48598263
I'm not trying to me pretentious or an asshole, but the post you guys have been making about improvising are off base.
>>48598356
It depends. For chords, I usually try to find all the root notes. Then I pretty much guess until I find the quality. It's usually easily to tell if it's major or minor, and if it's rock I usually guess it's a power cord. I'm mostly and electric bassist and upright player though.
>>
>>48598487
The chords are written out and there is no rhythm. Google a lead sheet and look at it.
>>
>>48598557
You know those lines going up and down the staff in between the notes? Those are called bar lines. They separate the music into measures to make it easier to read.

If you look at the very front of the piece there should be two numbers on top of each other that will explain to you how the rhythm of the measures works.

>You can get a fakebook which will have standards written out in leadsheet form
I might take a look at that for the sake of practicing. I think that knowing the chords and being able to hear them and play over them would probably be beneficial for my ear.
>>48598502
I've no problem learning rock tunes. Unless it's something really proggy. It's usually just root third fifth as you said but I've got a harder time hearing other qualities like 7ths and especially I find it harder in jazz where you don't get the chords spelled out for you.
>>
>>48598595
Look at a lead sheet. As you can see, the lead part is written out, and the chords are on top of the measure. As far as how you play those chords in piano, bass or is up to you and the band. I tried not to be pretentious, but fuck it. You don't know what you're talking about. I've played in my unis jazz ensemble for last year.
