Only new things I am watching right now is JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders and Space Dandy S2 (why people think this is bad when it is made specifically to be good looking mindless entertainment is beyond me). AOTY is likely to be Ping-Pong, great art direction, great OST, somehow managed to adapt an already great manga and improve on it with it's extra scenes.

i think most of what happened to dubstep (bass music) was similar to idm in a lot of ways
if you think about how diverse that genre ended up being

idm wasn't really a cohesive thing, most of the people making it were raver kids sat around listening to dance tracks on acid at home so it took on all kinds of weird slants depending on what other records they had around for getting fucked up to

americans couldn't get their heads round europeans getting into dance music on their own terms (europeans understood house as it was happening in 86-89 because they already had synth pop before any of that and could relate to it), so in america it was branded idm as a way to make it seem less inferior than they thought black music was (due to subtle racism and homophobia)

as a brit in 94 i had a really fucking hard time explaining to white americans that i liked chicago and detroit music, they just wouldn't take it seriously

There have been three EPs that came out on Exit this year which were quality, two of them had quite a lot of Juke influence though but they are still more like that sort of D&B.

I still haven't heard Emperor & Mefjus - Hello World EP but that might have some on it (it might be more Neurofunk though but it is on Critical). The comp that came out on Critical this year is also really good but not exactly like Dub Phizix though.

actually i do wonder whether there is a certain amount of ignorance necessary in order for things to be considered new

it seems like these days a record comes out and within 5 minutes people can describe it, even with little prior knowledge because of the history of everything being online, and people being able to share info in places like this

in a way all this sharing is making it harder for things to seem original, so a lot of people don't even bother

i might just be making excuses for it tho, i do feel like there's a lack of new ideas but every now and then i get surprised and think something's new, only to be told later that 'its just x genre'

that kind of reductive description lends itself well to the internet in its current form but also stops some people noticing the little details that make things unique
it's easy to dismiss things now, everyone's an expert in categorising and dismissing things
