You are sooo fucking wrong. Shoegaze was a term made in the 80's when bands just made beautiful noise on stage and stared at the floor because either

1) because too many pedals / effects
or
2) music was so slow you couldn't dance to it
or
3) so drugged out

dream-pop is a term made a couple years ago for when pop musicians started using delay / reverb.

Just because /mu/ fags label it the samedoesn't mean it's the same thing
>>
dreampop wasn't coined a few years ago. that term came before shoegaze I believe.
>>
>>47046229
even if the term dream pop was "only made a couple of years ago", that doesn't mean the genre (which you have a very poor grasp of) hasn't been around for a long time

>Most people I know don't have the slightest fuckin' clue in all of hell what shoegaze is. Or dream Pop for that matter.
not well-known in that sense, but rather in terms of the genre. Like it or not the best shoegaze/dreampop bands are gonna be the "essential" ones i.e. MBV, Ride, Cocteau Twins etc. Sure there's some good bands that are more obscure/recent but there's barely anything that manages to distinguish itself in a genre where so many of the bands are virtually interchangeable.

I didn't say anything about Loveless being the "be in and be all" of anything. I'm saying shoegaze was cool in the late 80's/early 90's when it was fresh and exciting but seriously, there has been almost nothing since like 1993 that has managed to do anything significant or invigorating for "shoegaze". All these bands like Whirr, Nothing and Beach House are just imitations of older bands that get trumpeted by the music press for the simple fact that they sound like those bands.

Again. Listen to more music. You are seeing a small pixel of a much larger picture. Flogging a dead horse and saying stuff like "Oh My, Shoegaze was only good in the late '80s and early '90s" just shows how ignorant and close minded you truly are.

You get a "plebeian" on the test.

>>

>>47047096
>"Oh My, Shoegaze was only good in the late '80s and early '90s"
I said it was best during that time, and after that it's mostly shitty. Learn to reading comprehension fucker.

>>47047108
To further the genre as a whole don't you think a band should have a relevant following of both fans and press?

>>47047152
Significant amount of fan following/media attention.
>>
>>47047247
>To further the genre as a whole don't you think a band should have a relevant following of both fans and press?

not necessarily. a band can push a genre forward with a single album, none of which is dependent on having fans or a following/press.
>>
ITT: gay

shoegaze is bad
>>
>>47047273
Okay but after they released that album there should be some reaction by the public right? Or at least years later a wave of bands that cite that album as an influence?
>>
>>47047097
No prob m8
>>
>>47047283
Right, so we've established
>in order for a band to further a genre, they must be relevant
>for a band to be relevant, they must have some significant following from fans/press either during or after the release of their seminal album

now how many shoegaze bands from after, say, 1995, can we think of that applies here?

Fucking wrong in ever way. A.R. Kane coined the term Dream Pop in 1988 before anyone knew what the fuck shoegaze was. Learn your history before you start making bullshit claims.

Anyways, without caring about the differences between the two, here are some recs:
Lovesliescrushing
Swirlies
The Ecstasy Of Saint Theresa
Blind Mr Jones
Medicine
Sweet Trip
Drop Nineteens
A.R. Kane
Starflyer 59
early Brian Jonestown Massacre
A Place To Bury Strangers
Whirr
Luna
Moose
Asobi Seksu
Colfax Abbey
Julee Cruz
Chapterhouse
Astrobrite
Teenage Filmstars
Pasteboard

Those will get you started, then just dig from there.
>>
>>47047247
>Significant amount of fan following/media attention.
yeah that's kind of the opposite of the stuff im into
>>
shoegaze= MBV

dreampop= 'real human bean"
>>
>>47047247
And I told you in logical and comprehensible terms that you're blatantly fucking wrong.
>>
>>47047247
>and after that it's mostly shitty
so you said the same thing, basically
>>
>>47047389
>>
>>47047389
This.

I'd also like to add that dream pop and shoegaze aren't just the rock and pop flipsides of a coin. Shoegaze-centric rockists like >>47045505 tend not to see what kind of phenomena the two are in the big picture. Dream pop is a large umbrella with roots in experimental music, new wave, ethereal wave and whatnot and nowadays you can hear it in everything from specialized metal fusions and all sorts of electronic music to mainstream pop and indie rock. Dream pop was an important influence to the shoegaze scene alongside noise rock and alternative rock, and shoegaze as a sound is more specific kind of a fusion.
