it's not really that bad of a question.
people tend to mistake industrial for its signifiers -- distorted guitars, synthesizers, and fast tempo butt-rock drumming. but a big part of the birth of industrial was also approaching songwriting like you were constructing a product. raw elements went into something as a process, and a finished product was spit out the other side.
because The Residents were terrible non-musicians, they pretty openly described their writing process as trying to make a "house" from the ground up. they didn't understand music theory or even how to play instruments. they would just stack up individual pieces and evaluate if it sounded right.
so i guess they're proto-industrial in some sense, if you solely consider the approach to writing. but they honestly didn't even show up that much earlier than industrial music. the rise of samplers and synths just set all this shit in motion concurrently.
