can't say I understand what disco has to do with close to the edge at all
>>69062544
it's not disco in particular, but unlike other prog bands, "Close to the edge" aged like a carton of milk from the same time.
It feels way too 70's, and when you can tell the decade a music was made when you hear it, it is shit.
>>69062607
>when you can tell the decade a music was made when you hear it, it is shit.
it's hard to imagine a wronger statement
How can people listen to classical? It all sounds the same.

>>69061769
No, classical is the classical of our time.
>>69061786
modern* classical
>>69061769
no, it is the "classical" of many decades ago, with some guitars and pop progressions thrown in

Posthardcore masterpiece 1994. Cedrick said on twitter there would be no ATDI without this album. Dustin "Dirty", roadie of Unwound is also close friends of the guitarist and singer of DLJ.

Listening to this all the way through is a chore. The longer songs are too long. I stubbornly forced myself to listen to this album in it's entirety over many times because it's a "classic" and most importantly, clearly there is good album in here.
Now I know how to actually enjoy it.
Basically edit to the same length as a Hot Snakes album and it's just better. A lot of bloat can be removed. A shorter, condensed version would've better for all longer songs. Luau's riff in particular is massive, I'd love more of that than the other crap. Luau seems the most worthy of it's length but also the most that could've been turned into something more memorable. Anything other than the main riff is quiet by comparison and they have a tension building riff in there that builds to it perfectly though the last we hear of at 3:55 not even half way and the intensity drops. The noise stuff at the end is alright, just doesn't kill me like the first part 4 min of the song.
I find that the parts that sound the least like Hot Snakes(early 90's emo) are the parts that can be chucked. I can always listen to the full version if I'm "feeling" it.
Revised End points:
Here Come the Rome Plows at 4:05(ending the song with the "rome Plows" refrain at 1:49 would've been cool) the last part I would've kept begins at at 5:20.
Do you Compute 5:00
Luau at 5:00 (not a fan of the "Luau" chorus quiet part). The most intense stuff and most "song" like part is all in the first 5 min though I do like that 6:50-7:30 part.
Super Unison at 4:10
New Intro 2:30
And skip to last 2 min of Sinews

i see where you're coming from. i like yank crime, but i treat it as a double album. first half ending at luau, second half at sinews. kinda autistic but it's the only way i can listen to it

I listened the whole album walking around my city this afternoon. its fucking amazing I never get tired of it
>3 years today since he died
how are you honoring him, /mu/?
but for real though, it will be a year in only two months. that's scary enough on its own you didn't even have to meme it
>>69061555
what are you talking about? David Bowie died 11/14/13, right after releasing Blackstar. Everybody knows that
>1997 was 35 years ago
Why even live
If you would recommend one single album to a person who previously only has listened to top-40 type music, which one would it be?
Pic semirelated
Something from TMS or remain in light.
Both fairly poppy by modern standards.

Albums you thought it was going to be a masterpiece judging by the intro of the first song or the first song itself
Hotelier - Home Like NoPlace Is There
Modest Mouse - Lonesome Crowded West
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
A Tribe Called Quest - Low End Theory
Is there anybody here whose favourite album isn't a cliché? Are we all victims of hype culture or are these albums overexposed for a reason?
no op you're literally the only person in this board with real taste congratulations good job

Sometimes music is popular for a reason
>>69060535
I did say "Are we all", which kind of implies my choice is also a cliche.
I know reading two whole sentences is probably very taxing for you but you must put in the effort.
What went wrong?
low testosterone levels
personality cult, segregated online communities, bandcamp, modern parenting, toxic masculinity
nothing, he makes very nice music
What does mu think of them where they just a little ahead of their time?
The best British Pop band since the Beatles
So sad they didn't get the recognition they deserved.

These guys were the absolute embodiment of New Wave.
I personally prefer OP's pic related to anything else in their catalogue for one particular reason - the guitar playing. These guys were fucking guitar wizards, with that rhythm+lead dual guitar hybrid and melodic bass.
It's almost a shame their better known records are those where they mostly abandoned guitars and went full synth.
Why do people shit on this release?
It was an amazing return for Aphex and showed how he utilized modern technology to make his music even more complicated in the best way possible.
It's catchy as fuck, patterns are constantly changing, and an unbelievable amount of details throughout the whole thing.
>>69059918
Haven't seen anyone talk down on it dësü
SAWII > RDJ > SAW > SYRO > DRUKQS > ICBYD
>Why do people shit on this release?
no one did this except for neckbeards mad that aphex twin was getting critical acclaim again
Is he the Gertrude Stein of lyricism?
After 22 A Million, he's more like e.e. cummings

Can't usually hear the lyrics over his mindblowingly gay falsetto
>"The thing Alaska did next scared and shocked and surprised me in a way nothing had ever ever scared or shocked or surprised me until that moment, a moment which lasted no longer than one sharp intake of breath but one I have no doubt will last my entire life. She said 'I love you'. Not 'You're cool' or 'I had a really fun time' or 'Do you always kiss like that?' I love you. As in 'I, Alaska Young, love you, Miles Halter'. As in 'I Alaska Young have not only noticed that you Miles Halter exist but I positively adore the fact that you do'. I exhaled. Alaska did too and for the first time I realized she was as scared as I was of admitting the way she felt. I stepped forward and held her hips. 'Are you sure?' I asked. 'I think so!' she replied, smiling. I must have pushed her backwards because just then her body nudged the lightswitch and the room became as dark as my life was without Alaska in it. Laughing, she slipped out of my grasp and disappeared somewhere inside the room. I reached out like a blind man searching for the object that might grant him sight. Truly, I was Looking for Alaska."
What did he mean by this?
