People like Death Grips because they're "edgy."

Musicians respect the production + Zach is an inimitable drummer.

Otherwise it is just an exercise in how to gain notoriety in the youtube social media era: illegal albums, special limited editions, minimal touring + "i quit" stunts.

They are definitely profound to those who need to absorb more media. They're definitely a personification of angsty self-absorption that gives all the li'l edgelords a personality to swoon behind.

A parallel is million dollar extreme for the alt-right. Give a (relatively) charismatic, extroverted person a platform and all of the shut-ins and no-lifers have someone to point to as an example of their own internal monologues.

Parents, nerds and outsiders don't get it, etc. You can draw a timeline and pick out who the "Death Grips" were at any point in history, and how silly those bands (but mostly their fervent fans) look in the long run: essentially any band that had an edge that showed the separation between fans and others, and even fans from other fans (never mind that the culture itself might contribute to that separation).

Remember when Marilyn Manson or Limp Bizkit were popular? I'm sure you don't have to dig far to see someone defending them in exactly the same manner.
