I'd be surprised if you really did get it if you've never listened to jazz before. Basically they're all improvising together using only melodic ideas and some tonal centers as a reference point, so there's not really a lot for your ear to latch onto if you're not used to listening to the way the players in jazz interact with each other. Hard bop or maybe even bebop is a good place to start if you want to understand where this is coming from.

Seen The Vibrators quite a few times in my life.
Unfortunately Knox isn't in good health and won't tour the U.S. anymore but still a great band to see nonetheless.

My mum seems to think that David Bowie appeared on a chat show a few years back after The Next Day. She distinctly remembers him having long hair and talking about his heart attack to the host. I think it's possible this happened in the early 2000s. Does anyone know if she actually saw this and is getting some of the details confused or if she's completely made it up?

Her singing voice is actually fucking terrible for someone at her level of fame. It's preachy and cloying and thin and sexless. Her songs themselves are pretty good because the people she hires to write and produce her songs are pretty good.
