Let's talk nicely about the awesome Canadian artist Claire Elise Boucher, known as Grimes.
News:
- The futuristic new Venus Fly video featuring Janelle Monae is out now on Tidal
>almost finished building like 20 or so 5D multi timbral synths in roli equator, they'll be released for roli blocks later this year. never made synths from scratch before, its pretty fun
Video with her playing a mean jam: https://www.instagram.com/p/BP6JQUMjSd_/
- Grimes produced a new Aristophanes song, Humans Become Machines: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BHmVqMISPLw If you don't know, Aristophanes is that Taiwanese rapper that performed on SCREAM.
- David Byrne is a fan:
>"I started collecting pictures of Grimes, Madonna, Kate Bush, Sinèad O’Connor, on and on—popular musicians are obsessed with her. This trend inspired the premise for the show: a pop star decides to give in to the Joan obsession and tell her epic story in concert".
>Boucher's public persona is definitely striking, but one-on-one, the perception completely dissolves. Here I was expecting someone brimming with whimsy, but instead she was a 24-year-old girl; rather down to earth and just coming to terms with the concept of fame. The fame that brings David Byrne of Talking Heads to your shows. When his name came up, Boucher was absolutely ecstatic, like an excited little puppy. "The tour in America was fucking insane. David Byrne being there was crazy. I kinda wish I knew he was there before the show… But then again if I did, I probably would’ve been really nervous".
Rule #1: be nice to Grimes.
Rule #2: see Rule #1.
Garbage.
Does she even play guitar?

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

Long and possibly sloppy review coming. Because man, this one was hefty.

Pelt - Ayahuasca
>Drone, Free Folk, American Primitivism
First off, this album is fucking massive by my standards. It’s about two and a half hours long despite only having 10 tracks. Typically, I wouldn’t really listen to something this long but most of this chart has been great.
I think I like drone more in concept than in execution. Because at about the hour mark, I ended up feeling a little bored. I’m not quite familiar with the genre, aside from about 3 or 4 albums and I’m never sure what I should do. Pay crucial attention because it’s so minimalist? Or zone out a little and let the atmosphere flow over me? I kind of ended up switching between the two approaches throughout the two hour listen and had to tackle this in chunks throughout the day.
Although it’s classified under drone, a genre prides itself in musical simplicity, this album is actually surprisingly diverse. Sure, there are a few 15+ minute tracks on here that wander on in drone fashion, with pretty much nothing but overwhelming distortion. Those were indeed interesting and different than I’m used to - but they weren’t quite my favorite. A few of the tracks, such as “True Vine” and “The Dream of Leaping Sharks” had this psychedelic, Eastern influence that was just fantastic. These tracks had a very similar feel to the Sequentia album in some ways - they were a weird blend that felt both uncomfortable and overwhelmingly spiritual/mystical.

[2/2]
In addition, there were also a handful of tracks that touched on Primitivism. “The Cuckoo” is a nice country-ish sounding track that sounded like Perry Leopold. There’s lots of droning guitar feedback in the background, giving it an almost lo-fi feel, but the primary primitivist guitar isn’t too hard to hear. The closer, “Deep Sunny South” has a very similar feel but minus the droning. Pretty straightforward Fahey-ish stuff. The closer, “Raga Called John, Pt III” was kind of a middle ground, with the feedback remaining mostly unobtrusive in the background. Probably my favorite track because of that.
Overall, this was quite an interesting listen. It had a unique blend of drone, primitivism/folk and psychedelic influences that kept me entertained despite the length. Definitely one of the more original albums I’ve heard but I just wish it were shorter. The 20 minute tracks ensure that I won’t return very often and the hints toward Primitivism only frustrated me. I wish this had leaned more on the folk side honestly
I can see why you like this so much though Nat - it sounds like the combination of three/four albums from this cart. I feel guilty listening to something this long and not giving it at least a 4...
