Well if you have an option to test them at the store, definitely do so.
You can't go wrong most of the time if they aren't visibly busted. Also if you have some basic soldering skills 90% of the problems can be fixed in a heartbeat.
Tons of brands are fine like dynaco, infinity, ems etc. just avoid mcintosh like the plague and you'll be fine.
