Non-metalheads of /mu/, what's your favorite "genre-metal" album?
I'm not an enormous metalhead and by-and-large I have a contempt for listeners who only listen for the fastest breakbeat, or the most "brutal" riff, or the most "epic" doom drones. I really only like metal artists that can stand up to scrutiny by outsiders.
Anyway, Symphony of Silence by Carcass has all the stereotypical trappings of a neckbeard metal album, but I can recognize it sounds guttural and swampy as all hell. Any of you guys have an album that does similar things for you?
Dethalbum and its sequels got me into melodic death metal. I'm still mad AS shitcanned Metalocalypse
All We Love We Leave Behind
Botch
Boris - Pink + Flood
Atheist's weirdo prog death
Slayer's first 4-5 LPs
Dodechahedron
It's weird, I'm not too heavily into metal as a whole but I do have a strong love for the 90s death-doom/gothic metal acts like Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Katatonia and Anathema. Like, Brave Murder Day and The Angel And The Dark River are 2 of my all-time favorite albums with shit like Icon and The Silent Enigma not all that far behind. I dunno, that particular style just really does it for me.
What's some good music to do the dab to?

Death Grips
This album is still easily a 9/10.
i like thom's alternate tracklist that he posted:
there there
the gloaming
sail to the moon
sit down. stand up
go to sleep
whereiendandubegin
scatterbrain
2+2=5
myxomatosis
a wolf at the door
Wouldn't say easily but it is my favorite album of theirs and I would say that it hits a 9 for me personally. I can see how someone could be offput by the haphazard tracklisting but I think there's a very coherent mood to the album and honestly it's still a quality batch of songs as a whole.
go to sleep is a shitty song though
Thoughts on their debut?

The Hurting was great though. Had their best song, Pale Shelter.
I actually didn't like SFTBC much but I do quite enjoy The Hurting.
Thoughts?
Weasel's on the new CP Unit album from January

I never heard of that band.

From what I am hearing, pretty good.
How varied is your musical taste? I know that a lot of mutants (particularly in chart threads) like to flaunt how varied and wide their musical horizons are.
Nothing wrong with that, but I'm one of those plebs who hasn't been able to successfully expand outside of my two main genres which seem to cover my musical bases well enough; Metal for when I want something more energetic (thrash, death, doom, handful of groove and black) and Electronic for when I want to chill (Ambient, Downtempo, IDM, a touch of experimental stuff).
Pretty much anything outside of that which I don't hate merely manages to be "pleasant enough" or "inoffensive" and just doesn't manage to get my juices flowing enough for me to be enthusiastically into it. Rock, Pop, Jazz, Classical, Punk, Hip Hop etc. They either just don't give me an emotional reaction to urge me to dive in, or I only like select hand picked tracks and don't care for the genre at large. >mfw
Who is in a similar situation, or used to be?
i seem to find something i like in nearly every genre. lately i've been getting very much into blues but i mainly listen to metal
>>71834804
mine doesn't have much variety - almost nothing but pop with the occasional bit of prog, country or folk
>>71834804
I think it comes down to randomly finding an album or track you really like in a different genre and expanding from there
how the FUCK did they get so popular?
>>71834776
Frusciante and Anthony can really right a good pop song. but they need each other to do it.
John Frusciante being one of the greatest songwriters of all time

i can't into stooges
>>71834723
Yes, i definetly agree, but let's not forget about s/t which is pretty good too.
What's your reasoning for why this decade has been so shit music wise?
2010 was kinda strong but that's more a remnant of the 00s
After that it was straight up shit year after year.
>>71834693
rock music has finally ran out of fresh ideas, Arctic Monkeys and the Strokes killed it by popularizing genre revival and general mediocrity
>>71834693
>>71834707
literally wrong. listen to more music. particularly in the freak folk, electronica and art/prog rock genres.
this decade's top 10 as per RYM

Maybe I'll revisit that Earl LP - I listened to it once and it was so stark compared to his debut mixtape (which I loved)
