I like the leaks from that stage visual guy's vimeo channel more though.

More like sort by highest rating on RYM/Allmusic and listen to the top and quit there.

I do this unless an artist has a ridiculously long discography.

underground dance music is best for exercise, mixes so the intensity stays constant. i run to minimal/techno/grime/jungle, depends on how fast i wanna run
most mixes will build in intensity over their course so its good for pushing yourself
I've gotta say Death Grips is my current fave to run to, they just get me #pumped
I have some general rules for a song being listenable. It must have the following
-at least 4 instruments or noises playing throughout the song. Which is why I can't stand some artists in techno who lazily do 3 and think adding a ton of reverb will get the job done. Sometimes you can have certain effects to count as a fourth "Part" but it needs to be reallllly well done.
-The song must have changing parts throughout at maximum 30 seconds per part, switch it up! (as opposed to the same 4 bars... for the ENTIRE SONG) It needs either that or the typical pop formula where you do one part for 30, go to another, then switch back.
-It must demonstrate "Width"
(which is stereo acoustics)
Artists use this for a variety of reasons on some parts because it can separate significant parts that would otherwise sound shrill when clashing with the highs of a track.
-It must have a live element. Singing, or a sample, or a live instrument, or something to give it that analog warmth.
...What are yours mu?
If it has a female vocalist it better have killer instrumentals, is my only rule
Blondie, Kate Bush, Laurie Anderson, Ladytron Joni Mitchell, and Bjork all satisfy. There are very few others that come to mind.
Other than that I can't find my unifying threads in the music I listen to. Almost none of it has whiny male vocals is one other thing.

...so I bet you hate oasis then?
>>72125936
these are pretty good rules, although they can be broken
i would add that the singer has to be tough or mysterious-- it's feeble music otherwise. a lot of indie pop is basically background music because of how lame the singing is
What's wrong with the "I listen to everything except country and rap" meme line?
Country and rap music are the only two genres that are objectively shit. Country is just worse than rock, and rap is terrible. It's not very descriptive to say "everything except country and rap" but it's true. I don't hate the occasional reggae or folk song. I like classical and funk sometimes. I can even tolerate metal. But I never ever listen to country or rap, because they're bad. I don't want to give them a chance, because nothing about them appeals to me.
So? Why can't people say "everything except country and rap"?
>>72125904
>Country is just worse than rock
Listen to more actual country.
It's not that people can't say it, it's that people say it when all that they listen to is top 40 pop and try to pretend that they have diverse tastes.
>>72125919
>actual country
Like what?
Do you guys play any rhythm games like DDR or Guitar Hero?
Naw. Sometimes I do this thing where I take a bunch of stimulants and do a full band cover of any of the songs off the Beatles Red Album though, that shit pretty much the same thing
don't tell them! they're hacking your account!
beatmania tho
