What are some albums revered as "classics" that, if they came out today, would not be received with such acclaim?
No necessarily albums that aren't as good as we remember, just albums that are products of their times or wouldn't be anything special today because they were only innovative at the time they came out

ITAOTS
It's just standard indie rock released way ahead of its time. If it was released now, literally nobody would care, excepy maybe some people would find the whole anne franke thing funny.
Swans - Sountracks for the Blind. people only pretend to like this garbage album because it kinda sounds like Godspeed but came before them. literally garbage random noise and squeals just an unbearable album

Give me similar music please
The only reason so many people suddenly "hate" so much /mu/ core shit like Radiohead and NMH is because they dive head first into these albums with their own plebiean expectations of what is supposed to be one of the greatest things they'll ever hear because of the "throne" these communities have given them.
Having these high expectations when you aren't even familiar with an artists sound is the wrong way to listen to anything, so fuck off with the "WTF WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE THIS SO MUCH" shit, just chill out and listen to them again at the right place and time without spazzing the fuck out about it.

A slight variation in the meme doesn't mean the meme will stick. It ain't happening
The Chameleons' first 3 albums are really incredle, a perfect mix of gothy post-punk and glam. However, I think they never made it because they were such late comers to that aesthetic. They came out in the mid 80s, when the British indie scene had already moved onto bands like The Smiths, the JAMC, and Amebix, so seeing a band that looked and sounded so much like Joy Division must've already seemed retro. If they'd been 4 years earlier, I bet they would've been huge.

what? if anything this album is overrated

Nice bait.
>>73439638
They intentionally and sometimes unintentionally sabotaged themselves. Wild, drunken performances, fucking up TV appearances, making "anti" music videos. They did succeed in influencing countless future bands and musicians.
Why weren't these guys bigger? This album is fucking incredible.
I don't get it
