you mite start by renting one from your local music store if you're really into the concept.

A good violin is a serious investment, and of course you don't want to end up with an instrument and never play it, but maybe stick with a rental for 4 months or so and see how you feel about it.

Violin is pretty fucking tough to get sounding good imo, since it requires the development of a good technique. (Hence why most of my HS orchestras sounded like dogshit)

Only advice I can give though I never played violin

Get a good teacher. He/she will advise you on everything from buying your first violin to good technique and practice habits.

Violin's a pretty tough instrument to sound decent on, so strap in.
