I have been recently diving head first into jazz, been listening to anything tagged "post-bop". After learning the time line of jazz it makes sense that post-bop includes some of the most acclaimed albums ever. Sitting between free jazz and the more accessible hard bop, I guess the post bop mentality is what I have been looking for.

I know these albums are definitely not "gems" to the jazz experts, but regardless of that I have been greatly enjoying:
Komeda Quintet - Astigmatic
George Russell & His Orchestra - Jazz in The Space Age
Wayne Shorter - Speak No Evil
Eric Dolphy - Out There

For more spiritual styled jazz I would recommend checking out M'lumbo. They blend together avant-and spiritual jazz with sound collage stuff, I would consider them a gem.

Because every single bit of it that I've heard uses the exact same formula: extremely heavy and compressed guitars with scooped mids that churn out the most boilerplate metalcore riffs imaginable that are pushed to the front of the mix to fight for space with the growled vocals until the chorus hits and suddenly hey, it's sparkly-clean pop-punk whining. But wait, they're saying *sHoCKinG tHINgS*, this isn't something that NORMAL people can appreciate, it's just too TWISTED. But also so emotional, can't you see how they're singing that nobody understands them using the tried-and-true method of showing, not telling?

The production typically suffers from being overly clean, with each instrument sounding like it was individually tracked. Basically everything is nowadays and it's a good practice, but you do everything you can to make it sound like it wasn't, otherwise you end up with the completely sterilized, dull sonics that pervade scene kid music.

The music and scene is emotionally immature, but not in an endearing, nostalgic way. The entire thing banks on the idea that the audience is not only different from normal people, but are better precisely because they're different, when in reality they're just your average, stupid and suggestible kids or adults who can't grow up and find solace in a shallow, manufactured identity that's based on music by bands that can't come up with an interesting idea to save their lives.

Every aspect of the scene is just as manufactured as anything by The Chainsmokers but nobody inside it will admit it.
