Someone last night said Bill Evans was the mastermind behind this, that's a lie right
The thing about this album is that 90% is improvised... miles wrote most of the heads but they're all quite simple. Maybe what they meant is that Evans being the pianist was playing chords behind most of the solos and helped build a good foundation for them. Idk, because it's improv there's no one person responsible for the greatness of this record.

Bill Evans is exquisite in his playing but I was just perplexed when someone said he was the brains, improvisation with miles direction is what I heard as well. I know Winton Kelly substituted for the Free Loader track since it was more blues oriented. Question, were black American jazz artists classically trained? I feel like a lot of jazz does really explore chord progression or chord rooted melody or harmony

they were classically trained in so far as they often began playing in conventional brass bands. some of them like george russel became music students and he wrote the lydian concept treatise which influenced both davis and evans. evans' compositional influence on "blue in green" has been acknowledged much later.
holy shit
Good album
Why can't all their albums be like VCN?

what do albums do you recommend to truly get into jazz?
He's great for getting people into jazz, or at least he was good for me. Cool backstory, lotsa cool chordwork even with like some proto black metal style tremolo, with his more virtuosic moments good for getting a person into more advanced stuff.
Like I always think the best starter progression would be
Djangology -> The Black Saint And The Sinner Lady -> A Love Supreme -> Kind Of Blue (or anything from second quintet) -> Ornette Coleman (or Coltrane's free jazz works)
Because conceptually things get more and more complicated and less poppy as you go on with each consecutive one taking more from a non-jazz listener to digest than the one before.
