is he still just a rat in a cage?
Believe it or not, but yes. All anger aside.
"It is all a grim desert, this once fair world, wherein is heard only the howling of wild beasts and the shrieks of despairing hate-filled men; no Pillar of Cloud by day and no Pillar of Fire by night any longer guide the Pilgrim"
-Gucci Mane on his release from Federal Prison

phish just finished day 9 of a 13 day run at the historic madison square garden. they have played 9 shows, 18 sets, 161 different songs played with no repeats. seems like they are going to make the whole run without a repeat.
each night they have featured a different donut theme that has lightly influenced the musical selections each night. for example, strawberry donut they opened with an a capella version of strawberry fields forever, and segued into a smooth version of strawberry letter 23 in the second set (both first time played). each night they've busted out old rarities, and unique, first timed played covers. in general, their playing has been highly praised at these shows.
i doubt /mu/ has many phish fans, but wanted to get some non fans thoughts about a band taking on such an audacious challenge as playing the same venue 13 shows in a row, and (so far) not repeating a song...
each night they give out 1000 or so free donuts to fans entering the venue. as mentioned the donuts influence the theme of the night. night 4 featured 'jam filled' donuts. the night featured heavy improvisation throughout the night, including two songs that stretched the 30 minute mark. not everyone's cup of tea, i understand, but phish fans seek out shows like this.
moving into the speculation phase - apparently billy joel wanted to play msg for a new years eve show, but phish had already locked up the venue. he allegedly called them something like "a second rate cover band". that year they played four straight nights without a single cover or repeat, and phish's lyricist, tom marshall, tweeted something like "phish nights without a cover - put that bread in your jar". between now and then, billy joel played 12 straight shows and received this banner (photo related). so the bakers dozen can also be potentially seen as 1 upping a musical rival.

From Happiest Days Of Our Lives And Another Brick In The Wall Part 2 On Pinks Floyd Album The Wall
YOU! YES, YOU! STAY STILL, LAD
When we got old and go to school there are certain teachers who would hurt the kids anyway they did. By putting their separation into everything we did, exposing all the weaknesses however securely hidden by the kid. But in the town it is good known that the night that they get home there fat insane brides would hit them within inches of the life.
WE DON'T NEED NO EDUCATION
WE DON'T NEED NO THOUGHT CONTROL
NO DARK SARCASM IN THE CLASSROOM
TEACHER LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE
HEY, TEACHER, LEAVE THEM KIDS ALONE
ALL IN ALL, IT'S JUST A ONE MORE BRICK IN THE WALL
ALL IN ALL, YOUR JUST A ONE MORE BRICK IN THE WALL
