I only listen to classical so there is no such thing as a "backing track" unless the piece has electro-acoustic parts, which is pretty rare - only for some contemporary pieces.
I guess for pop music where the production is the focus for their sales and the live shows are simply to make money and promote sales, feel free to listen to recordings.
The who "audiophile" thing is a meme though. Headphones don't increase in quality the more money you spend on them. Any more than $50 US and you're wasting money.
If you want to spend a lot of money on gold wires and getting your own power distribution pole in your front yard so you can have "pure electricity" (some Japanese audiophile actually did this), feel free. No one is going to stop you.

Why are these bastards so FUCKING expensive? Like each time I advance in tax-bracket they all bump up a couple-thousand dollars at a time. I swear I saw one at Knott's a few years back for like $1,200. Now I'd be lucky to find a BROKEN one for that price.
