Why would anyone listen to Mac DeMarco when Deerhunter exists? Or probably any number of jangly, vaguely psychedelic indie rock bands that are much better
I don't get the appeal of this man

"That’s really the change that’s taken place in the last 30 years in electronic-based forms of music. Drums have moved to the top of the hierarchy of musical elements, and typical chord changes or other elements aren’t a necessity in making music."

thoughts? what are some albums that demonstrate this idea?

maybe. some of the music writeups for this trope are interesting though. i mean bad
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/SeinfeldIsUnfunny/Music

>Franz Liszt, Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss were loathed in their lifetime. Many reviews and newspaper cartoons depict them als makers of cacophonic noise that nobody would ever listen to. If you hear their music today you don't get why it sounds that much different from other easy listening classical music.

>The Velvet Underground: The Velvet Underground & Nico and White Light/White Heat got terrible reviews at the time. People felt the music was too noisy and experimental, and the outrageous lyrics about heroin, male prostitution, transvestism, and S&M didn't help. Nowadays they actually sound quite pleasant; even the lyrics aren't that explicit (devoid of expletives as they are).

>Oasis . Today they might seem like just another mainstream British rock band, but were fairly revolutionary when they first came out. They drew their influence from the North's indie scene and stood out amongst their edgier contemporaries like Suede. People today have heard so much droning, anthemic pop-rock from bands like Coldplay that they've lost perspective on the originality of Oasis.

>"Sandstorm" by Darude seems to have suffered from this the most. Back in its day, it was THE most popular and awesome song to listen to at dance clubs. Nowadays, after being overplayed and exposed to so much Memetic Mutation on the internet, many modern EDM artists and enthusiasts just don't see the song as anything special or spectacular anymore.

I feel like it's not an issue with the album itself but the hype surrounding it that's pushed away indie fans. It's an awesome album, one of my favorites, but the constant memes and overexposure have taken away a lot of the impact.

i just got FL studio yesterday and have been playing around with it and this is the first thing i've ever made. anyone got any advice on how to get into music like the basics because i have no musical knowledge or concept of how a song is structured.

https://soundcloud.com/user-861504701/half

any advice and constructive criticisms on how to improve would be nice

best thread for legitimate advice
but im curious what you want to know.

Do you want to know about song form, structure or production?

Song form and structure take place after you decide what genre you want to make. Hip hop? Well that form and structure is generally AB (correct me if im wrong) verse chorus. Instrumentation for that genre is drums, bass, something for a melody and maybe some strings etc. (extra sound effects for that professionalism).

Production has to do with mixing (making sure all levels are fine), add sweeteners (reverb etc), maybe some compression and mastering (ensuring all tracks flow to the next and aren't different levels).

Im sure someone could add more since Im only new to this myself
>>
>>74417335
A lot the time its about researching the genre of music you are interested in making and then trying to put it into practice.

Like understanding how hip hop artists got their sounds, how they recorded them and how they mixed it into the song (what instruments are prominent).

I'm basically completely new to it all.
In respect to production i just know how to set up a basic drum pattern and then maybe add like a synth or piano type effect over the top but i want to know about melody etc.
what layers sound good in a song type of thing because when i try to add too many sounds it just sounds terrible, so every thing i make just ends up sounding horribly basic

top quality music memes
