What I did was download a dB meter app on my phone, then put my phone in my headphones as close to the headphone speaker as possible. I make sure it's well below the 8-hour limit threshold, by several dB at least. In fact that's actually still a little louder than I'd like so I usually have it even lower.

If you download the NIOS app for your iPhone it's pretty much guaranteed to be extremely accurate because it's designed and calibrated specifically for each iPhone.

I listened to amplified K701s for five years at a loud volume, I would more often than not get a ringing in my ears for about fifteen minutes after use.

When I switched to Sennheiser HD600s I found the volume didn't have to be so high at all. I realised with my old headphones I was overcompensating on volume for a soundstage that was too wide for my liking. I don't need ridiculous volume to hear everything that is going on.

I don't think I did any permanent damage thankfully but you have to be careful with these open backed headphones.
