Yes, even crazier with gsxr750 cams. Tops is an entire gsxr750 head and carb set, which requires raising the tank for clearance. The gsxr750 has the same valve size and CC volume as the 1300 bandit.

This is a popular drag racing setup, which means the right (early, oil-cooled) gsxr parts can be hard to find at salvage yards / flea-bay, as the drag guys snap it up. I still want to do it, though.

anybody?
>>
>>24953
It's slightly below riding on tires with wires showing. If your sprocket is worn, your chain can come off and then you are absolutely 100% fucked. It isn't like a chain snapping where there is a decent possibility of it snapping clean off and not getting caught up in your wheel or countershaft. With a worn sprocket, that is the only thing that can happen.

If I wanted something that once I'm done restoring it I can just ride, if get a Honda cb350f
>>
>>25085
eh its night time and I'm in bed. but it looks very similar to this one off google images.

There are clearly still teeth and all the teeth are still there, and pulling on the chain doesn't cause anything to slip.

I'm only going to have the bike for a couple more months so I don't know if it's really worth fixing it.

Want a motorcycle but don't have a secure place to store it, just a shared lot for my condo complex.. At least I can browse and learn right now, and the models that interest me will be slightly cheaper when living arrangements change in the future.

Shitty neighbourhood?
Cause I don't really have a space for my bike, so it's just gonna sit in the back of my truck.
I live in barracks, and I'm not technically supposed to use more than one space, but I actually have 2 cars, and now this bike.

You could always get a storage unit, and leave it there until you want to ride, unless you're trying to daily it that is.

Ok /o/, help me pick from 2 donercycles.

Bike A is a 2005 Vstar 650 for $1200. I like the price, and it leaves me some extra cash that I could use to bob it out. But I could easily spend any savings on customizing it, and I could easily out grow a 650. (Pic related)

Bike B is a 2002 Honda shadow 1100 for 2100. I'm used to 1100s, and I like how it currently looks, but still may want to bob it or bag it.

So do i spend a little money for a bike I'm not thrilled about but it'll get the job done, or just spend the extra cash for something that looks better and is a size I like more?

Get the Vstar if you want a very easy project. Off the shelf modular kits are available and are fairly well priced. You can mix and match parts for what you want but its a bit of a lazy way to build one. Good if you dont have a significant workshop facility to hand.

Get the Honda for what I imagine will be greater torque, and a better sound. I know nothing about the shadow to be honest as I am a homosexual who rides Suzuki sportsbikes

>>26236
If you havent got $15k+ for one (price last time I saw one for sale a while ago) just get a Ural
>>
>>26280
I find an RPM I like to launch at, 7000 RPM on mine, hold the engine at that rpm, apply rear brake, let out the clutch until it's just biting.

Then when you launch you just drop the rear brake and roll the clutch and throttle on at the same time as to maintain that same RPM, if the bike starts to wheelie release the clutch a little slower or use some rear brake, don't cut the throttle too much.

Thanks man, neat video and coordination - impressiv. Nice choice in whiskey. How's Bud Light Platinum? I've never tried it, I prefer hard liquor cause it get the job done faster.

Honestly I'm a Henny guy, but I ran out.
Platinum is like a smoother bud lite basically.
I used to be all liquor, but as I got older my stomach stopped being able to handle it as much.
Henny is one of the few ones I can still do pretty good. That and Glenfiddich.

Henny's my fav cognac, it's a real treat but I don't get it much due to price. I'm a fan of Bailey's as well, other than that I'm a straight capmo rum and bourbon guy. Never tried Glenfiddich, I'll look into it.
Thanks again, talking about my favorite spirits sure is lifting mine.

Glenfiddich is a tiny bit fruity, bit of a sweet taste.

hey guys this was just posted 5 hours ago and it looks to me like this might be my perfect starting bike; looking for second opinion

+ cheap af, my budget was $3000
+ super low miles for an older bike
+ not sporty looking so less cop attention
+ comes with trunk (intend to use for 21 mile commute after comfortable on highway)
+ reputedly easy handling

- carbs; will start clueless about moto mechanics, but at least in TX and CA warm weather
- air cooled; not good for sitting in highway traffic on commute
- hasn't been sold in the US since 2006, dunno if this will affect availability of parts
- reputedly less powerful than comparable 500cc bikes

I don't know how much you know of orthopedics, but you would much rather break your ankle than sprain it.

anyway, what you want in a boot is a stiff shank to protect your metatarsals from flexing, and and ankle stiff enough to *slow* ankle deflection without stopping you from shifting, and a nice shin plate to serve as a place to transfer energy from your boot to your leg safely.

well if some MX company tried it in the 70s on dirt boots that are rigid the whole way up to the knee then they can't possibly work on the multitude of road motorcycle boots that they're installed on in the 21st century now can they?

It can't be true that there's more than one implementation of the same technology to a differing effect?

It's bad for anything but its own spec series and cheesing your local club's lightweight class if they raised the displacement limit to allow it. It's basically a race homologation bike for a class that doesn't really exist, which also means nearly everything you'd replace, remove, or deactivate on a race bike is shit. Like even though it's the only sub-400cc sport bike to actually come with actual performance tires it's not even much quicker than an R3 on absolute garbage low wear tires on the track because the stock suspension is so bad.

Anyways the RC390 is a fucking terrible bike for high mileage just because it has a fucking joke of a fuel tank. Even if you managed to get 60MPG the fuel range is only 150 miles to absolute empty.

To help us assist you better:

What is your budget?
How much of your commute is spent on the freeway at 80mph?
What is the climate like where you live? Heavier bike is generally less skittish in the wind and feels more planted. I used to ride my 800cc Honda at 130mph in the wet/damp round corners, but a lighter bike would be all over the place.

See my comment above >>27756 for the MPG at 80mph. Wont be shit on a <400cc bike. You need a 600 minimum, just dont get a gixxer/cbr/zx and you will be fine. Also, a 600cc will have a bit more "presence" on the road and the cagers wont try and do so much stupid shit.

Bikes you should consider:
FZ06
CB600
SV650 and similar

CBR300R gets silly gas mileage generally but 80mph is like right at the edge of where you'd ever want to ride the thing in traffic and I really don't know what kind of mileage it would get spending an extended amount of time with the revs that high.

R3 would do a bit better at that speed but you probably want to look at 500s and 650s if it's a big deal.

It's a '13 Twin, pre Power Plus. yea it's total loss, that tank behind the motor is oil you pump 4 it a few times every 50 miles. And because they were creative as fuck back then, the used oil dumps onto the drive chain keeping the chain lubed.
>>
>>28089
>>28053
That's fine by me. If I had the cash this would have a monster aluminum Windsor stroker and full independent suspension.

>>28110
That's cool as fuck
>>
>>28105
It's partly because of what others think.
Also, you always see "drop and ls in it"
So I wanna do the other thing, put a Nip engine in an american car.

I also want to put a 13b in the Courier, but that may actually be a good fit. Seeing as it's a mazda.

>use chicken wire/drywall wire mesh patch and muffler putty to patch cracked exhaust pipe
>slip dremeled soda can over patch and secure with hose clamps to further reinforce redneck repair
is this dumb enough to work
keep in mind both a dealer and exhaust pipe place said it was too rusty and thin to weld and I'm too poor (as of now) to afford a whole new exhaust system

Better than a fucking pigfat rb26
>>
>>28009
I've done a little under 300km ride with nearly 250km at ~70mph and still got over 70mpg on a CBR300R somehow. 80mph is probably where it will go downhill but it would have to still get pretty good gas mileage by any normal standard.

How enjoyable such a thing would be is another question.
>>
>>28133
Well, the RB26 isn't really any bigger than the straight six already in it.

As far as the Courier, there isn't room for a whole lot of engine.
>>
>>28125
Why the fuck not. Sounds like it would be worth it just to rustle jimmies at local car shows.

It's fun annoying boomers. Like how I ride my cruiser in the rain and refuse to put obnoxious pipes on it. Lol
>>
>>28157
You gained a lot of respect in my book purely for the not obnoxious pipes.
But do boomers really care if you ride it in the rain.

Not sure about the first part, but can confirm cans make the best exhaust repairs, pic related has had a beer can as part of the exhaust for 15 years.

99 percent of them are fairweather riders. And a good majority of them get pissy just because i have a fullface helmet. On more then one occasion I've had boomers say I wasn't a "real rider". But that's ok. I just smile and nod. Such is life i guess. Ah well.
>>
>>28078
100 miles a week at 70mph will get real tiring on a 390. I forgot about the z650, also you might want to consider faired as I'm guessing youre going to be riding year round with that mileage, also if you are taller/wider then it helps move the air around you and reduce buffeting.

>first bike
>$8000 for bike and gear
You want to be spending <4000 on the bike because you are going to drop it, and when you drop it you don't want to have to be claiming on the insurance as you will get ass raped come renewal. $4000 should still get you something relatively good that it will be reliable.
That leaves you a fair bit of money for insurance, and you can afford leather and textiles if you wanted.

Consider:
https://www.cycletrader.com/listing/2006-Honda-CB-599-121376142
In Europe we got a faired version of this, not sure about USA.

Kawasaki - don't know enough about them in terms of build quality as I've never owned one.
Suzuki - 2000-2008 they had shit build quality and bad electrics with their sportsbikes. I'm forever having stuff go wrong on mine and have just had to replace the entire charge circuit, although the sv650 is very highly rated, sounds good and being a V-twin you wont have to rev the fuck out of it like an I4.
Honda - reliability.

If used, it's a fine first bike. If new or your second bike, don't even consider it unless you're European and are forced to ride a hp limited bike
>>
>>28259
Haha. That's cute. I never thought of them as "rich" though, not when you can finance for over 7 years.

I really want a new bike. I'll consider used after I review my new options.
>>
>>28269
The Stralia cunt with a Super Four really hates it to justify his purchase of the most expensive restricted license bike he could buy, I don't think anybody else cares.
>>
>>28269
I rode one and basically just kinda hated it.

- If you get the ABS model the ABS is atrocious
- the engine is lacking in any character whatsoever, I usually don't care so much about this as I think "character" in bikes is mostly a meme but I mean it literally only revs to 8,000 RPM
- feels quite porky
-footpegs are massive and low, will need rearsets if you want to do anything more than commute or ride steady, with the peg feelers in there is DANGEROUSLY low clearance so remove them immediately if you buy one

If it was me I'd actually buy a cbr300r/f before a 500 because at least then it'd be light, nimble and pretty handy to turn into a fun track bike.

the new SP-8s look decent. i don't know of any better gauntlets at that price, but i still feel like you're better off going for something at a higher pricepoint.

Underpowered and heavier than the competition, with worse brakes. I love Honda, don't get me wrong I've owned three of them, but this bike was a bunch of engineers looking at the European a2 licensing limitations rule book and making a bike to those exact specifications.

dunno about your countries prices likely as I'm an ausfag, I have the old model aluminium frame SV650 and I like it enough.

you'll see on /o/ in general we're quite consistent in mainly recommending going 2nd hand for more average bikes, I totally see the value in buying new for the latest superbikes or new tech but for me for something that's gonna be average anyway might as well go 2nd hand and save some doubloons.
