I don't know too much about the original /pol/ since I started going there early last year, but things weren't the same once the general election started.
I got redpilled real quick when I went there and I did a complete 180 with my politics.
It was surprising when I saw T_D on reddit, especially with it's popularity.

Confession - I used to go on reddit, but once I started going on 4chan (/pol/ in particular) it just wasn't the same, I can't go back as this site has changed me. I hate reddit with a passion at this point, they just poison everything...

8pol is alright but it's much more serious, it's almost no fun allowed-tier. It's still much better than nu-4pol though.
