I think the Undertale fandom actually has some real promise to it because both 4chan and Tumblr are able to like it, and even seem to like the same parts- the game mechanics and characters. There are vocal critics of the game, but the fandom itself has a surprisingly small percentage of crazy. And since it's just one game that's already fully released, it won't end up pulling some twist or political angle later on that divides the community against itself.

While FNAF and SU are both regarded as the "Next MLP" by their fans, and while they do have different aspects of the pony fandom, they don't have the right combinations nor extendability to recreate that perfect storm.

You need very memorable characters, even if they're unorthodox, combined with immersive storywriting/good songwriting, fan content creators willing to jump on board, involved creators, guaranteed material to work on for an extended period of time, and the welcoming 'fandom' camaraderie.

Undertale has quite a few of these things, but if the first game is all there is, I'm not seeing the hyp lasting too long.
