to be honest, sticking with only one will lead to disdain, but if you wanna know what name got more songs on my playlist is archie, aftermath, simgretina, yourenigma, vaceslav, idkquicksilver, dynamite grizzly, (micro)thunder... there are a lot of other names but without that many songs on my playlist, so you would probably wont consider them relevant, still, they made good stuff

>>25318537

Is there such a thing as post ironic brony music? I could get on board with that. Post irony is peaking and is hip in the underground now.
>>
>>25315075
Did what Ian Watkins got found out about make LostProphets music bad? That's a better example of the same problem.

I read the transcript of the judge's summing up of his trial, where she listed everything he did. You think it can't get any worse, and then it does. And it just goes on and on. When I say bad, I mean REALLY FUCKING BAD.
>>
>>25318563
What makes music "post ironic"? I like the sound of that.
>>
>>25319278
>faith, trust, dialogue, performance and sincerity can work to transcend postmodern irony
>furthermore described as being “ignorance, fanaticism and anxiety” >
trance-like state” in those participating in it.
> media-induced shallowness and instantaneous participation in trivial events is a “silent autism” superseding “the neurosis of modernism and the narcissism of postmodernism

Basically post irony parallels new sincerity in the sense the previously ironic statements are to be taken seriously, but it combines an absurdist veil that shrouds its true intentions. It breaks away from the face value irony of postmodernism into something that is entirely ambiguous

Some prime examples of a post ironic movement could be die Antwerp, internet memes, Donald trump, and even my little pony itself. All are odd, somewhat meta, and give of a feeling of uncertainty; one is sure that the movement has intent and has an aesthetic, but it not concrete in its seriousness. It is basically meta irony in the sense that it is ironically ironic, fast paced instantaneous culture that spreads through society like wildfire and quickly burns out as fast as it came. People only take I serious as long as they can keep their attention on it before another piece of culture takes place.

So for a post ironic musical movement, there is no better place for it to take place within a post ironic movement itself. A meme within a meme, have you.

I was thinking maybe an aesthetic like this:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ITSB_6m4up4
Quick, snappy, absurd, and catchy.

The majority of brony musicians listen to the Top 40 of electronic music. Any eclectic, or just non popular or old, genre is outside their scope.
If you do music for yourself, take a go at it. If you want views, listen the top brony songs and follow their template.

Other than MIU, Christina Lawson, d.notive, Blackgryph0n and Mando drop your fucking autism for a second and just admit it, SGaP, and Feather. And that's just off the top of my head.
>>
>>25323040
Not that anon, but no.

I've never heard of the first two, and I wasn't aware SGaP sang. Doesn't he only do slices?

d.notive's and Feather's are processed like hell. d.notive sounds like he actually vocodes his voice, and Feather did a live performance with Aviators and sounded terrible. So no, they don't know how to sing.

I'll give you Blackgryphon and Mando. Especially Mando. But WoodLore's vocals are a cut above theirs. He's shit at producing, but I heard him play at BronyCon (inb4 autist) and he kicked ass.

If you got a link, post it. She sounded great in Apples of my Eye, but I've never been to ANY live performance of horsemusic, so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

WoodLore's alright. I honestly don't think his vocal skills are anything special. Impressive range for a baritone, but I could hit the same notes and I can barely sing for shit anymore.

Is it still worth it to get into the music scene? I've really been thinking about it, but with the state it's in, the decision's a real toss-up. I know it's not about having fans or recognition, but half the fun of this kind of thing is sharing it with others.

I appreciate the effort here, but there's a distinct difference between a song having great sounding vocals and a singer being great. Chi Chi's songs sound great because she works with great producers, and if you go to her personal channel you'll know what I mean. Having her in the same 'tier' as Woodlore and Joaf is kind of silly.

In that case, this original came out a few days ago, and it sounds quite like her best collabs.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bna9u9xYkCQ

I suppose she limits her potential range just to retain that signature cutesy, airy feel found in most of her singing. Fair enough stylistic trade-off I guess.
>>
I'm not going to get into who's better and who's worse. But if you're looking at who's a good singer, you have to look at who relies on pitch correction and who doesn't. Because at the end of the day, if your intonation is bad, it doesn't matter how spectacular your range, your stylization, or your tone is. If you can't sing on pitch, nobody is going to think you can sing. And I think that's fair.

And I'm not saying that using pitch correction is bad. If someone wants to use pitch correction to get the result they're aiming for, then that's great. The best songs in the fandom use pitch correction. But the songs that use it can't be a testament to the vocalist's singing ability.
>>
>>25327626
Oh hey, nice seeing you Wood

To be fair, I'm sure there are some who sing dissonantly as part of the work; stuff from Tanya Tagaq comes into mind

>>25327717

>>

doesn't seem to come cheap in your area, got a favorite strain?
>>
>>25327971
You called my bluff I haven't actually smoked weed every day since I was four.
>>
>>25327979
heh, weed is pretty common these days, don't have to smoke it to get that feeling

do anything for fun aside from cartoon horses? gotta have something to look forward to even if the present is dull
>>
>>25328024
I mean I have smoked, just not every day since I was four.

I was into hiking and wilderness survival when I had the time. Hopefully I'll get back to it eventually. I don't know how I went from wilderness survival to ponies honestly.

What's the most important thing to know about doing horse music?
>>
sim gretina
>>
>>25328235
First, everyone is in it for popularity and affirmation, at least partially. If someone says otherwise, they're lying.

Second, if you want to do horse music, don't get caught up in the hugbox. When you start putting out shitty music, everyone's going to tell you you're great, because they're bronies. And that can be a really great thing to hear, especially since a lot if people who get into this are very insecure and desperate for that affirmation. But you have to tune it out and find all of the faults in your music. Be your own biggest critic and realize that unless you have more than, say 20k subscribers, all of those nice people in the comments are full of shit.

I can keep ranting on this stuff tonight after work if the threads still alive.

Thanks. I'd actually like to hear more of your thoughts

>unless you have more than, say 20k subscribers, all of those nice people in the comments are full of shit
I'm disappointed. Telling people that "subs=talent"?
>>
>>25329669
I meant it more as that's the mindset you should have. There are obviously other factors that go into how popular you are, and i know it's subjective, but it's mostly about quality. If your content is good enough, you'll get the subscribers. I'm more trying to say that if you're not as popular as you want to be, don't make excuses for yourself as to why your not popular, just work hard to improve your content.
>>
>>25329774
It really isn't always about how good you are, some are really really talented yet they slip under the radar. It really is a dog eat dog world and if you aren't promoting yourself you will go under quicker than the Titanic after it hit an iceberg. And that is what really sucks about anything is the balancing act, if you are to focused on promoting, you aren't creating and if you are creating, you aren't promoting. It is why you see the most popular spamming countless songs every other day they get, and the more they do, the more the quality drops because they aren't spending as much time nor thought in their works.
>>
>>25329839
I agree to a point. But I think of you're really really good, your content will promote itself. And if you're really really not good, you can spam your shit everywhere all day and go nowhere.

There are always exceptions, but the point I'm trying to make here is that if you yourself are a creator, the best way to get more popular is to just work hard to improve the content you're putting out, regardless of any feedback you're getting. That's all I'm saying.

Do you have any music writing tips?
>>
>>25331704
I know it's not what people want to hear, but you have to know your music theory. You don't have to be an expert, but you need to be able to know how to build chords, know how those chords fit together in families, and know how your melodies fit into those chords. If you don't know those things, then you're just going to be guessing when you're writing something. At the very least, you should be able to listen to most pop songs and figure out the relative chord progression by ear. Once you're there, it's really easy to figure out how to build a song that you might have in your mind.

As for lyrics and subjects, and how to pair them with music, I think that's more subjective. I have my opinions on what works and other people have theirs. If blab about it on Elements Of Harmony if you're bored and want to hear it.

>but you have to know your music theory
Believe it or not, that's what I'm getting my degree in
>>
>>25329913
I don't know. I've been writing music for over seven years now and I'm still a nobody. I'd like to think it has something to do with genre. Apparently mlp fans love all the electronic shit, and overlook the more classical or acoustic side with the exemption of several artists of course. I find it so damn frustrating seeing people on soundcloud and youtube with thousands of subscribers for shitty copy/paste melodies/chord progressions EDM and I'm just sitting here with nothing despite spending typically over a month on something.

I said popularity has to do with QUALITY, not talent. The unfortunate truth is that it's possible for idiots to make high quality EDM without knowing what they're doing. I'm not saying that there aren't some really talented people making EDM. There are. But I use FL Studio, and the presets for EDM they have built into that thing make it really easy to sound like you know what you're doing. Music-savvy people can spot when EDM is generic, but most people can't.

>Apparently mlp fans love all the electronic shit, and overlook the more acoustic side

Believe me, I get it. It pisses me off constantly.

>I'd like to think it has something to do with genre. Apparently mlp fans love all the electronic shit, and overlook the more classical or acoustic side
It's because it's new. Like it or not, people have strong associations with genres, and classical, along with "classical" is seen as a genre that is about temperance, prudence, and good taste. When people think of modern music, they think of it being raw, experimental, and pushing the boundaries. It's not just that most bronies want to listen to EDM, it's that most people want to listen to EDM. It's new and fresh to them, and classical is seen as being antiquated, which is why people don't seek it out. As for copy-pasted melodies and chord progressions, that's nothing new. If you go back to the classical era of Mozart, Haydn, Salieri, etc. you'll find composition workbooks filled with musical structures. There were tons of musical gestures and progressions that were used all the time, and students would learn to elaborate and decorate these structures.

Princewhateverer is my favorite. I also like yelling at cats and glaze/wooden toaster. Twenty ten was good in the four songs they made. Used to like Mando for his songs like Loyalty and Kindness. Wish most of the people I like weren't dead.
Favorite song: https://youtu.be/QC8MHrFTLJ0

>>25333161
True, though I would say I've heard quite a lot of mediocre/bad non-electronic artists too, if not more
Probably because EDM is considerably easier to do 'okay' in as compared to other more acoustic genres

Got any favorite songs from electronic fan musicians? I've been around the scene since its inception.

Wood doesn't impress me because of skill or proficiency, it's because his voice has character. Makes me think of whiskey or a roaring bonfire.
