I'm trying to grasp hold of Luna's personality for a story/green I'm writing. In the show, we've got Luna's small appearances, and her two main episodes, Luna Eclipsed and Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep. After Luna Eclipsed, we saw Luna go from the socially awkward, custom-adhering pony using archaic English, to the wise, well-spoken, graceful and regal lesson-teacher we see in later episodes.
It seems within a very short span of time, Luna has learned the grammar and vocabulary of modern English without letting out as much as a "we" slip out at any time ever. Luna still uses fewer contractions and a more formal way of speaking than the other cast, but she no longer speaks like Shakespeare incarnate. This seems a little difficult in reality, and I'd imagine she might have a few "isms" remaining at least. I suppose your outlook on this can vary.
Her personality differs drastically from her two main episodes. Luna is clearly not as remorseful of her actions as Nightmare Moon in Luna Eclipsed as she is in Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, but it can be argued that it was overlooked to portray a different side of her for the episode.
Luna in Luna Eclipsed is a lot less reserved. She is interested in the concept of "fun" Twilight proposes, and with a little bit of coaxing, is busy losing herself in the new experience. We can see when she is left to it, she is a lot less reserved than Celestia, and a whole lot more awkward. That social awkwardness can most likely be worn off with time, because when the episode comes to a close we see her enjoying herself within reason, having "fun" with the best of them.

In Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, we don't really get to see her more casual side. We learn that after her rescue from Nightmare Moon, she has experienced an immense guilt, and as a result created the Tantabus to ensure she never forgives herself for the damage she caused to Equestria (WAKE ME UP). Other than that, Luna isn't given a chance to show off anything other than her duty oriented, "work mode" side, which, while useful, is only so very specifically.
An interesting thing worth mentioning though is how she was portrayed in the comics. It's like someone took her first appearance's grandiose and ran with it, adding their own creative extrapolation to fill in the gaps a bit. This portrayal also includes some old English, without it being too overbearing.
I was wondering what your guys' thoughts were on her personality, and whether you think the comics did her justice or not. Personally, I thought these pages were written pretty believably, and show Luna's more outgoing side. The writing gives me the impression she would not act like this all of the time, and that she's excited for the day ahead. It's easy to imagine toning this down a little to get her personality on a normal day off.

Probably because she spent 1000 years alone. She's probably lost quite a bit of control over her emotions, unlike Celestia, who seems always calm and reserved.

Yes, this probably is only because she was working against the Tantabus. It's not really an indication of her normal personality.
I think she is quite emotionally unstable and not very reserved, only becoming cool-headed in times of danger and extreme seriousness. She gets "in the zone", if you will.the danger zone

I'm thinking that the fear and hostility she received in Luna Eclipsed is what allowed her guilt to surface so drastically. It made her think that she was still like Nightmare Moon.

Why does /mlp/ hate FiW? Sure a couple episodes were pretty bland, but overall the show was filled with comedic geniusimhoand the music is superb which drastically adds to the surrealism of the show.

Lookie what showed up on the New Zealand McDonald's website today. Yes, Apple Horse is missing but someone on MLPMerch said McDonald's New Zealand usually shortens the number of Happy Meal toys internationally (e.g. USA get's 8 toys but New Zealand gets 4) so maybe she's included with 2 other characters since MLP always gets at least 8 toys with Happy Meal promotions. I hear they're dropping them in February after Teen Titans toys and Sweetheart lip gloss kits.
