There's the really obscure game Geppy X for the PSX, which is basically a 70's robot anime come to life! The machine's basically Getter Robo, too! Not to mention, branching routes.

If you like retro style 2D fighters, Armored Warriors is fucking great.
Also, since we're firing up MAME, the Mazinger Z shmup is pretty fun, and not as grueling as most shmups.
